If you're looking for an alternative to credit cards, consider getting a debit card. These cards provide all the convenience of a credit card but none of the debt. Unlike credit cards where you 'borrow' money from the bank at a set interest rate, debit cards allow you to use your own money, so that you can use what you have in your bank account. They also have the advantage of giving you access to your own money when you travel overseas.
Debit cards are available from major Australian banks, regional banks and credit unions. On Mozo you can also compare debit card reviews from real customers, to see which card providers Australians are rating as the best.
There are two types of debit cards on the market in Australia; Visa or Mastercard. Both the Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit have the same benefits and features, the real differences between them lie on a provider level (i.e. the banks). Choosing a card, comes down to what your bank provides and what special deals are attached to the different card.
When comparing debit cards against credit cards, it comes down to a personal choice on whether you want to accumulate debt or want to spend what money you have in your account. These cards allow you to do everything a credit card would without the associated risk of falling into debt. There is also no credit rating risk associated with a debit card. However credit cards do have a benefit in accessing funds that aren't in your account and some allow you to receive reward points at numerous locations.
Debit cards are a great way of making sure you only spend money you have. If you need some extra help with working out how much you spend and how much you should have left over each month, try our handy online budget calculator.
