James Lee Byars (born April 10, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan – died May 23, 1997 in Cairo, Egypt) was an artist specializing in installation sculpture and in performance art. Byars' notable performance works include "The Death of James Lee Byars" and "The Perfect Smile".
Byars was born in Detroit in 1932, studied art and philosophy at Wayne State University and lived in Japan from 1958 to 1968, teaching English and executing his first performance works under the influence of Noh theater and Shinto rituals.
When Byars was 37 years old—then half an average lifespan—he wrote his “1/2 autobiography.” Sitting in a gallery, he jotted down thoughts and questions every time a visitor approached him, and published them afterwards in a book he also titled The Big Sample of Byars. Obsessed by the idea of perfection, Byars produced a remarkable body of work that strove to give form to his search for beauty and truth. Pursuing what he called “the first totally interrogative philosophy,” he made and proposed art at scales ranging from the vastness of outer space to the microscopic level of subatomic particles, in an attempt to delineate the limits of our knowledge while enacting a desire for something more.

Curators Triple Candie and Jens Hoffmann discuss "James Lee Byars: I Cancel All My Works at Death," on view at MOCAD February 7 - May 4 2014. I Cancel All My Works at Death is the first comprehensive survey of the plays, actions, and performances of James Lee Byars (Detroit 1932 - Cairo 1997). Spanning the period from 1960 (when he created his first action in Kyoto, Japan) to 1981 (when de Appel arts centre in Amsterdam presented a year-long survey), the exhibition, which is titled after Byars' now-famous speech act, adopts the premise that the artist and his work are better mis-remembered than re-experienced. I Cancel All My Works at Death therefore presents none of his actual performances; nor does it include objects made, owned, or used by him, nor vintage ephemera--with the exception ...

http://visionarycreativity.com/wp1/ This is part 1 of a 2 part series of lectures I gave at Artis-Naples in 2016. It covers the culture of the 1960s and such arts as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and James Lee Byars. Part 2 looks at the architecture of the 1960s.
Pater Friedhelm Mennekes ist einer der bedeutendsten Kenner der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts.
In 1969, during a live broadcast on Belgian TV, James Lee Byars phoned 100 leading intellectuals and asked each for an intellectually provocative question. He hoped that this would elicit the most pressing questions of the day. What he got instead were a few questions, lots of opinions, and a big fat headache. For one afternoon, Triple Candie (Shelly Bancroft and Peter Nesbett) and curator Jens Hoffmann aped Byars' performance while altering his intent, randomly phoning Detroiters of all stripes and asking them what big life questions they pondered most. The results are compiled as a portrait of the city in question.
Lecture date: 2007-03-09 'To represent something is in a sense to make it visible to others as a possible object of reality. In eschewing this scenario, invisible artworks divert our focus from the physical and tend to increase the visibility of the artist's own role. They underscore the part played by our own responses in forging meaning from our encounters with art as well as the social and physical scaffolding that shapes its presentation. In this respect, invisible art belongs to a tradition of contemporary art predicated on the idea that an artwork is a collaboration involving the labour of both the artist and the audience. Somewhat paradoxically, it is precisely as a kind of rhetorical limit to artistic practice that invisibility can help us to rethink our relationship to the visibl...
