Dungeon
A dungeon is a room or cell in which prisoners are held, especially underground. Dungeons are generally associated with medieval castles, though their association with torture probably belongs more to the Renaissance period. An oubliette is a form of dungeon which is accessible only from a hatch in a high ceiling.
Etymology
The word dungeon comes from Old French donjon (also spelled dongeon), which in its earliest usage meant a "keep", the main tower of a castle. The first recorded instance of the word in English was near the beginning of the 14th century when it held the same meaning as donjon. Though it is uncertain, both dungeon and donjon are thought to derive from the Middle Latin word dominio, meaning "lord" or "master".
In French, the term donjon still refers to a "keep", and the term oubliette is a more appropriate translation of English dungeon. Donjon is therefore a false friend to dungeon (for instance, the game Dungeons & Dragons is titled Donjons et Dragons in its French editions).

Oubliette (The X-Files)
"Oubliette" is the eighth episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series The X-Files, and originally aired on the Fox network on November 17, 1995. Written by Charles Grant Craig and directed by Kim Manners, "Oubliette" is a "Monster-of-the-Week" story, unconnected to the series' wider mythology. It earned a Nielsen rating of 10.5 and was watched by 15.90 million people on its initial broadcast. The episode received positive reviews. Both the emotional nature of the story and David Duchovny's performance received positive critical attention.
The show centers on FBI special agents Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) who work on cases linked to the paranormal, called X-Files. Mulder is a believer in the paranormal, while the skeptical Scully has been assigned to debunk his work. In the installment, a little girl named Amy is kidnapped and imprisoned by a mentally unstable photographer. Mulder discovers a psychic connection between the recently kidnapped victim and Lucy, another girl kidnapped by the same man years ago. He attempts to use the connection to help solve the investigation, but discovers that the event may be too traumatic for Lucy to handle.

In this short video, we look at one of history's most brutal torture methods. Previously we have looked at The Oubliette, a tiny and small prison or dungeon in which prisoners were thrown into and simply just forgotten. These dungeons were the resting place for many prisoners who were left inside the hole in the ground, which were often filled with water and rats. In this short video, we look at one of history's most brutal torture methods. Previously we have looked at The Oubliette, a tiny and small prison or dungeon in which prisoners were thrown into and simply just forgotten. These dungeons were the resting place for many prisoners who were left inside the hole in the ground, which were often filled with water and rats. The Oubliette was horrific and means 'to forget' meaning once thrown inside the Oubliette, you were not getting out!
The Germans had a different variation of the Oubliette, known as 'The Angstloch' or fear hole. This was found in the basement of a Bergfried, a castle structure or tower used to defend and protect. Prisoners would be thrown down the Angstloch and left for a very long time. They were very deep and were also used to store cannon balls and ammunition for artillery. But as a dungeon they were horrific, and worked very similarly to an oubliette.

In this short video, we explain one of history's most brutal torture methods. Found in Castle's and in many medieval dungeons, is the Oubliette. These dungeons would act as the final resting place for many of the prisoners unlucky enough to be found here. The Oubliette was a tiny confined dungeon in which there would be no method of escape. The term 'Oubliette derives from the french term, 'to forget.' Prisoners would be given no food and were just forgotten. Sometimes the punishment would continue with the Oubliette being half flooded and filled with rats and the remains of the previous prisoner.

One of the most feared torture methods used in History was the oubliette, a small and tiny dungeon found inside of Medieval Castles. The oubliette was a hole in the ground where a prisoner would be locked in and simply forgotten. It was truly terrifying, and a prisoner would be left to succumb to their fate and they had no chance of getting out.
But inside of one of England's greatest castles, there was a terrifying oubliette found inside of a torture dungeon and this was known about across Europe. Today we go into this dungeon and we go and explore the oubliette and it's dark history.

One of the most brutal and tough punishments and death sentences was the Oubliette. The word Oubliette comes from the French, 'to forget,' and it was simply a hole in the ground where a prisoner would be thrown in and forgotten. The prisoner was given no food, and usually there were some horrendous things joining them inside of their prison cell. Human waste and the remains of the last prisoner would be found inside the oubliette, and it was so cramped and small that someone could not stand or sit down. This meant they had to crouch for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Oubliette would have been psychological torture for a prisoner and would have been horrific. If you were imprisoned inside the cell, you would never get out and would be left to rot. It was a confined and tiny dungeon which would be sometimes half flooded also, and it was considered to have been one of the worst torture and execution methods in History.

A dungeon is a room or cell in which prisoners are held, especially underground. Dungeons are generally associated with medieval castles, though their association with torture probably belongs more to the Renaissance period. An oubliette is a form of dungeon which is accessible only from a hatch in a high ceiling.
Etymology
The word dungeon comes from Old French donjon (also spelled dongeon), which in its earliest usage meant a "keep", the main tower of a castle. The first recorded instance of the word in English was near the beginning of the 14th century when it held the same meaning as donjon. Though it is uncertain, both dungeon and donjon are thought to derive from the Middle Latin word dominio, meaning "lord" or "master".
In French, the term donjon still refers to a "keep", and the term oubliette is a more appropriate translation of English dungeon. Donjon is therefore a false friend to dungeon (for instance, the game Dungeons & Dragons is titled Donjons et Dragons in its French editions).
