Abdikadir Mohammed called on Kenyans of "all faiths and creeds" to stand together against the "heinous crimes". At dawn on Saturday, al-Shabab gunmen attacked the bus in northern Kenya, shooting dead non-Muslim passengers. The Somalia-based Islamist group has carried out numerous attacks across Kenya since 2011. The bus was travelling to the capital, Nairobi, when it was stopped in Mandera county, not far from the border with Somalia. Gunmen separated out non-Muslims by asking passengers to read from the Koran, officials and witnesses said. Those who failed were then shot in the head. Kenya's Red Cross confirmed that 28 of the 60 passengers on the bus were killed, 19 men and nine women. One survivor, Douglas Ochwodho, told how he was singled out to be killed but was not shot and then pretended to be dead among the bodies. abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines

Al Shabab militants Deadly bus attack kill 28 in Kenya bus Al-Shabab militants from Somalia hijacked a bus in Kenya's north and killed 28 non- Muslims on board after they had been singled out from the rest of the passengers, police officials said Saturday. Two police officers said that the bus traveling to the capital Nairobi with 60 passengers was hijacked 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the town Mandera near Kenya's border with Somalia. The officers insisted on anonymity out of fear of reprisals because of an order from Kenya's police chief that officers should not speak to the media. Some of the dead were public servants who were heading to the capital Nairobi for the Christmas vacation, the officers said. Kenya has been hit by a series of gun and bomb attacks blamed on Somalia's al- Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants since it sent troops into Somalia in October 2011. Authorities say there have been at least 135 attacks since then, including the Westgate Mall attack in which 67 people were killed. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the Westgate Mall attack in September 2013. The terror group also said it was responsible for other attacks on Kenya's coast earlier this year which left at least 90 people dead. Kenyan troops are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia which is bolstering Somalia's weak U.N.-backed government against the al-Shabab insurgency. Al-Shabab has continued to carry out attacks on Somalia's capital despite being pushed out of Mogadishu by African Union forces supporting the government in August 2011. The Somali government troops backed by AU forces are making progress in capturing the remaining al-Shabab strongholds. Recently, they captured the port town of Barawe. Al-Shabab was also dealt a heavy blow following the death of their leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, who was killed in early September in a U.S. airstrike. Godane has been replaced by Ahmed Omar, also known as Abu Ubeid. extra tag: al shabaab, al shabab new video, al shabab nasheed, al shabaab 2014, al shabaab documentary, al shabab 2014, al shabaab mujaahidiin 2014, al shabaab leader killed, al shabab fc, al shabab new video 2014, kenya, kenyan music 2014, kenyan drake, kenyan music, kenyan gospel music latest, kenya moore,

At least 48 people have died after unidentified gunmen attacked hotels and a police station in a Kenyan coastal town, officials say. Witnesses in Mpeketoni said gun battles lasted for several hours and reported seeing buildings set on fire. The town is on the mainland near Lamu island, a well-known tourist resort. Kenya has suffered numerous militant attacks since 2011 when its forces entered neighbouring Somalia to combat the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group. This is the most deadly attack in Kenya since at least 67 people were killed during a siege at Nairobi's Westgate shopping centre last September carried out by al-Shabab. Gunmen kill 11 in fresh Kenya coast attack: Police For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 At least 11 people have been killed in a new attack on Kenya's coastal region, officials said on Tuesday, one week after some 60 people died in twin massacres nearby. Some were hacked to death with knives, others shot andexecuted at close quarters, mirroring tactics used in earlier attacks claimed by Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab. The attack took place overnight on a small village near the town of Witu, on the mainland some 50 kilometres west of the tourist island of Lamu. Lamu County Commissioner Stephen Ikua called it an "unfortunate attack", the third in the area this month. Five bodies were initially found, Ikua said, but a police source later said that six more bodies were found, taking the toll to 11. Deputy district commissioner Benson Maisori said that some "were killed with knives", while others "were shot, executed at very close range." Several people were reported to have been wounded in the attack and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, local councillor Athaman Badi said There was no immediate claims of responsiblity. "We have sent our officers to the ground to get more details... they are on the ground pursuing the attackers," Ikua added. The village is reported to be a mix of Kenyan ethnic groups. Attacks last week on the nearby coastal Mpeketoni district left at least 60 dead. "The style of the attack is very similar to that at Mpeketoni, it seems like it is the same men," Maisori said. The flare-up of violence has badly dented Kenya's tourist industry at one of its traditionally busiest times of the year, a key foreign currency earner and massive employer for the country. Last week's attacks were claimed by Somalia's Islamist Shebab insurgents, though President Uhuru Kenyatta blamed "well-planned, orchestrated and politically motivated ethnic violence" carried out by "local political networks". Kenyatta's accusations have stoked already tense political rivalry between the government and opposition parties, and raised fears of renewed ethnic tension. Popular satirists, Redykyulass, are on a campaign to encourage people to vote. They’re using laughter to bring a fresh generation into politics. “We’re redefining politics”, states comedian KJ proudly. Comedy group Redykyulass first came to national attention by satirising leaders like Daniel arap Moi. “They smashed all the taboos and beliefs and mystique that surrounds politics”, states events manager Big Kev. Now, they’re turning their attention to getting Kenya’s youth to vote out Africa’s ‘old men’ and vote in a new youthful generation of political leaders. “We should not be recycling politicians. We should be getting some new young guys”. They hope these new leaders will reflect a more democratic Kenya. (For Business news around the African Continent, visit our website www.abndigital.com) In 1963 Jomo Kenyatta led his country to independence aligning the economy with capitalism and the west. This was a departure from a trend to the socialist policies adopted by other newly independent African countries including Kenyas neighbour, Tanzania then under the stewardship of Julius Nyerere. A famous meeting between the two leaders highlights the different economic paths the two countries would take and ultimately who would come out tops.

Kenya's economy is robust, but policymakers will need to keep a close eye on issues of devolution and public resource management to ensure that the country remains on its path of growth. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, told NTV's Business Editor Wallace Kantai that 2014 is poised to be a good year for the Kenyan economy. In a wide-ranging interview, Wallace began by asking her how well Kenya's economy is doing. Though Kenya's economy has great potential, it has only managed to achieve short - lived periods of high growth, this is attributed to Kenya's inability to sustain a growth curve for long. While an increasing number of African countries have reached middle-income status, Kenya still lags behind. Kenya's economy can best be compared to a car driving at 80km per hour in third gear -- it has not been able to shift gears to grow at a higher speed. Video by: MEDIABASE PRODUCTIONS LTD P.O. It's estimated that at least half the population of Nairobi live in slums. The children of the slums flock to the city's markets to search for food among their waste. The harrowing sight of young girls scavenging for food on stinking tips was a spur to action for some of Hawkers Market's customers. As Shariffa Keshavjee remembers, "The girls were pulling at our skirts, saying 'teach me, teach me'. And then we realised that we have to educate these girls." Shariffa and other customers set up the Hawkers Market Girls Centre to give at least some slum children the chance of a better life. The Centre offers vocational training in professions such as hair dressing and tailoring, as well as classes in life skills such as computer literacy and basic healthcare. Each year up to forty girls are either employed or set up in business with assistance from the project. The Centre also offers valuable lessons in how to make small incomes go further. The girls grow their own vegetables, harvest rainwater and earn some extra cash by selling homemade charcoal briquettes. "Giving the girls an income generating skill is very important," says Shariffa. "We can't ask them to contribute to the project, but by selling what they make they feel like they are giving something back."
We stay with matters economic but this time in Kenya, where the IMF has given the country's economy a clean bill of health ahead of its debut eurobond this year. The Fund's Resident Representative Rugnar Gundmundsson says Kenya's debt is sustainable, despite increasingly higher levels of government borrowing. He also says that the country is poised to contain inflation within its 5% target, despite it topping 7% in December 2013, and analyst predictions that this could rise to 10% in the first half of 2014. He spoke to CCTV's Beatrice Marshall who started their conversation by asking him about the IMF's growth projections for Kenya, in 2014.

The country’s growth for 2013 was calculated to have risen to 5.7% up from a previous estimate of 4.7% making Kenya the fourth biggest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa after Angola. However, the government is warning Kenyans against celebrating yet saying gains of the new found status would only be realized in the medium to long term.

www.abndigital.com Recent developments in East Africa's largest economy Kenya involving a face-off between the country's security forces and a terror group linked to Al Shabaab who held shoppers ransom in the upmarket Westgate Mall focussed attention on the ability of that government to deal with the security and geopolitical dynamics in Kenya. Many questions remain in the aftermath of the siege. ABN's Karima Brown chats to Aly-Khan Satchu, CEO, of Rich Management and Ebrahim Deen, Researcher at the Afro Middle East Institute about the implications of the attack on Kenya's policies and economy.
NAIROBI, December 5, 2012—Kenya's economy has the potential to achieve a five percent growth rate next year, if elections are credible and transfer of power to a new administration is achieved peacefully, says the latest World Bank analysis on Kenya.
President Uhuru Kenyatta wanted Kenyans and citizens in the larger East African Community to buy locally made products to boost the economy. He spoke when he met officials of the East Africa Confederation of Informal Sector Organisations at his Harambee House office. The Government had applauded the role of the informal sector in youth employment and was supporting artisans through soft loans to make quality products that meet global standards, in order to remain competitive in the market. The president added that the promotion of indigenous entrepreneurship would reduce dumping of cheap products and convert the EAC region from a consumer of imports to a producer of locally available products. The Kenyan stand at the ongoing Smithsonian folklife festival in Washington was a major attraction as the festival hit the homestretch. A day before the festival comes to a close, the Kenyan stand was a beehive of activity as Americans flocked the venue to sample Kenyan cuisine, music and dance. Most of the visitors admitted they wanted to experience a taste of the country they have heard so much about, given that barrack Obama's father was a Kenyan. The two Kenyan ministries of culture and tourism have been keen on using the festival to try and roll back the effects of negative travel advisories by western countries. Kenya was facing a shortage of medical personnel and there was need for the private sector to team up with the government to offer medical training. Health secretary James Macharia also said that private hospitals had to make their services affordable to avoid foreign travels in search of medical assistance in hospitals deemed to be cheaper outside the country. It was estimated that the country looses millions of shillings in such travels yet by working with private hospitals, patients could still get those services in the country. The health secretary was speaking while at the Karen Hospital during the official launch of the hospitals MRI Unit. The Equipment was a Philips Ingenia 3.0T, a digital broadband magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) solution. With this installation, clinicians were expected to spend less time on the logistics related to patient set-up, contributing to as much as a 30 percent increase in throughput of patients compared to non-digital MRI systems. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News A series of bloody attacks has rocked Kenya since the September 2013 Westgate mall massacre in Nairobi that left 67 people dead. Curiously, some recent victims in these attacks have been Muslim sheiks that were associated with al Shabaab, the jihadi group that took credit for the deadly Westgate attack. Even more curiously, all of the high-profile sheik murders have taken place in the same area in Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city. VICE News headed to Mombasa to speak with Abubaker Shariff Ahmed, the highest profile radical sheik in Kenya, before he was assassinated in April, and to get a close-up view of those living and dying in the crosshairs of a holy war being fought on Kenya's streets. Its been almost two weeks since terrorists attacked the west gate shopping mall in westlands in what was perhaps a retaliation for Kenya's incursion into Somalia according to the alshabaab who claimed responsibility for that attack. This just the latest in aseries of attacks on civilians since kenya went into war with the militants. And in a few days time it will be exactly two years since the Kenyan soldiers rolled into the Country in what was described then as an act of self defence. And given the constant attacks within our borders, the question as to whether this was a justified battle remains largely unanswered two years on. OFFENSIVE AGAINST TERROR: Kenyan troops capture Ras Kamboni town. 3 Navy officers sustain minor injuries.
NAIROBI, Kenya — An upscale mall popular with the Kenyan elite and the foreign diplomats and businesspeople who call Nairobi home turned into a war zone on Saturday, as gunmen opened fire on shoppers in an apparent terrorist attack, killing at least 30 people and wounding dozens more. At nightfall, the mall remained sealed off to the public as police officers and soldiers searched floor by floor for the gunmen, who were still believed to be inside with hostages. Witnesses described hearing explosions and gunfire as they fled, leaving behind blood, broken glass and carnage in what was apparently one of the worst terrorist attacks in the country's history. Joseph Momanyi, 26, an employee at the Nakumatt grocery store there, said that as he was running away he heard the attackers shouting that "Muslims should leave" the complex. Hours after the attack began, the Shabab, the ferocious Somali militant group that has been linked to past attacks in Kenya, suggested in a series of Twitter posts that its fighters were responsible for the massacre. "The attack at Westgate Mall is just a very tiny fraction of what Muslims in Somalia experience at the hands of Kenyan invaders," one post said. Others continued: "By land, air and sea, Kenyan forces invaded our Muslim country, killing hundreds of Muslims in the process and displacing thousands more. The Kenyan government, however, turned a deaf ear to our repeated warnings and continued to massacre innocent Muslims in Somalia." It said it had warned the Kenyan government that failure to remove its forces from Somalia "would have severe consequences." Kenya is widely considered a beacon of stability in an often unstable region. The United Nations has a hub here, as do many nonprofit organizations and corporations. The country's economy is heavily dependent on tourist revenue, with peaceful safaris and gentle holidays on the coast attracting people from all over the world. Even before the rise of the Shabab, Kenya was a target for terrorist attacks by Al Qaeda, like the 1998 bombing of the American Embassy in Nairobi and coordinated attacks on an Israeli-owned hotel in Mombasa and an Israeli airliner in 2002. But Kenya has found itself ever more enmeshed in the bloody volatility of Somalia since October 2011, when Kenyan military forces invaded Somalia to help fight the Shabab. The Kenyan authorities blame the militant Islamist group for a grenade and gunfire attack on two churches last year that killed 15 people. Gen. Abbas Guled, secretary general of the Kenyan Red Cross, said in a phone interview on Saturday that 30 people had been killed and more than 60 wounded. The police had not yet confirmed any fatalities. Local media reported that one wounded suspect had been detained at a hospital on Saturday evening. The State Department said it had reports that several Americans were among the wounded, although it declined to elaborate, citing privacy reasons. "We condemn this senseless act of violence that has resulted in death and injury for many innocent men, women, and children," said a department spokeswoman, Marie Harf. Stephen Opiyo, 25, who was working at a supermarket there, said: "We heard gunshots and started running, trying to find an escape route. I saw many people who had suffered gunshot injuries, and some have been taken away to hospital." Witnesses described attackers using AK-47 rifles and throwing grenades. Photographs from the scene showed a woman's bloody body being lifted out of a car, the glass of the window shattered. Vivian Atieno, 26, who works on the first floor of the mall, described "intense shooting," starting around 11 a.m., before she escaped through a fire exit. Haron Mwachia, 20, a cleaner at the mall, said he escaped by climbing over a wall. "I heard several gunshots and managed to run away," he said. "It was a horrible experience to me, and I was extremely afraid," he said. "I've never seen anything like it." Military helicopters hovered overhead as the police kept bystanders away from the scene. The police said they had surrounded the mall, and officers were seen clearing the shops one by one. "Our officers are on the ground carrying out an evacuation of those inside as they search for the attackers, who are said to be inside," Inspector General David Kimaiyo of the Kenyan police told Agence France-Presse. Agence France-Presse reported that the gunmen had taken at least seven hostages, citing police officers and security guards at the scene. The Red Cross reported around 5 p.m. on its Twitter account that the hostages were being released. Benson Kibue, the Nairobi police chief, told The Associated Press that it was a terrorist attack and that there were probably no more than 10 gunmen involved. Earlier, Mr. Kibue said the attack had been part of an attempted robbery. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/22/world/africa/nairobi-mall-shooting.html?hp&_r=0
For the first time members of Kenya’s counter-terrorism police admit to “eliminating” suspected Muslim radicals. Speaking exclusively to Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit, officers from four units of Kenya’s counter-terrorism apparatus admitted the police assassinate suspects on government orders. They claim that the order to assassinate is made by the National Security Council, a body chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The film examines how extra-judicial killings are seemingly becoming normalized, thirteen years after the so-called ‘War on Terror’ was declared. http://www.aljazeera.com/kenyadeathsquads/ Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglish Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera Check our website http://www.aljazeera.com/
Nairobi Mall Shooting NAIROBI, Kenya -- The Kenyan military remained in a tense standoff with Islamic extremists Sunday, as the toll rose to 59 dead, including children, and 175 wounded in the attack at an upscale mall, a Kenyan minister said. Multiple barrages of gunfire erupted Sunday morning from inside the building where hostages are being held by militants. The radicals attacked the mall Saturday and remained inside throughout the night. Kenya's Red Cross said in a statement citing police that 49 people had been reported missing. Officials did not make an explicit link but that number could form the basis of the number of people held hostage. "The priority is to save as many lives as possible," Joseph Lenku said, reassuring the families of the hostages in the upscale Westgate mall. Kenyan forces have already rescued about 1,000 people, he said. Ten to 15 attackers remain in the mall and Kenyan forces control the security cameras inside the shopping center, Lenku said. Combined military and police forces surrounded the mall in the Westlands neighborhood of Nairobi, which is frequented by foreigners and wealthy Kenyans. An Associated Press photographer saw Kenyan soldiers carry into the mall a rocket-propelled grenade, an extremely heavy weapon for an indoor hostage situation. Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga told reporters at the mall that he has been told officials couldn't determine the exact number of hostages inside the mall. "There are quite a number of people still being held hostage on the third floor and the basement area where the terrorists are still in charge," Odinga said. Somalia's al-Qaida-linked rebel group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the attack in which they used grenades and assault rifles and specifically targeted non-Muslims. The rebels said the attack was retribution for Kenyan forces' 2011 push into Somalia and threatened more attacks. Kenyans and foreigners were among those confirmed dead, including British, French, Canadians and Chinese. Britain's Foreign Office said at least three U.K. nationals were killed in the attack and warned that the number of U.K. nationals confirmed as killed is "likely to rise as further information becomes available." A 38-year-old Chinese woman was killed in the shopping mall "terror attack," the Chinese Embassy in Kenya said in a statement Sunday. Her son was injured in the attack and in a stable condition in hospital, according to the statement posted on the embassy's website. Nineteen people, including at least four children, died after being admitted to Nairobi's MP Shah hospital, said Manoj Shah, the hospital's chairman. "We have at least two critical patients currently, one with bullets lodged near the spine," he said. The hospital continued to receive patients Sunday, he said. Ghanain poet Kofi Awoonor died after being injured in the attack, Ghana's presidential office confirmed. Kenya's presidential office said that one of the attackers was arrested on Saturday and died after suffering from bullet wounds. Trucks brought in a fresh contingent of soldiers from the Kenya Defense Forces early Sunday. "Violent extremists continue to occupy Westgate Mall. Security services are there in full force," said the United States embassy in an emergency text message issued Sunday morning. Britain's Foreign Office said that Foreign Secretary William Hague has chaired a meeting of Britain's crisis committee and sent a rapid deployment team from London to Nairobi to provide extra consular support. The United Nations Security Council condemned the attacks and "expressed their solidarity with the people and Government of Kenya" in a statement. There was some good news on Sunday, as Kenyan media reported that several people in hiding in the mall escaped to safety, suggesting that not everyone who is still inside is being held by al-Shabab. Cecile Ndwiga said she had been hiding under a car in the basement parking garage. "I called my husband to ask the soldiers to come and rescue me. Because I couldn't just walk out anyhow. The shootout was all over here - left, right_ just gun shots," she said.

On Sunday, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta said the group of attackers was made up of both men and women. 'Don't represent Islam' Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the attacks, adding "because the situation is ongoing we should prepare ourselves for further bad news". "These appalling terrorist attacks that take place where the perpetrators claim they do it in the name of a religion - they don't," he said. "They do it in the name of terror, violence and extremism and their warped view of the world. They don't represent Islam or Muslims in Britain or anywhere else in the world." An image grab taken from AFP TV shows civilians taking cover following an attack by masked gunmen in a shopping mall in Nairobi on September 21, 2013 About 1,000 people managed to escape from the Westgate centre Earlier on Sunday, Kenyan interior minister Joe Lenku gave an update on the numbers of those confirmed dead and injured and said 1,000 people had managed to escape from the shopping centre. As well as British, French, Chinese, Ghanaian and Canadian citizens have also been confirmed dead. And Kenyan president Mr Kenyatta revealed in a speech on Sunday that his own nephew and his nephew's fiancée had been killed in the attack. Of this responsible, Mr Kenyatta said: "They shall not get away with their despicable and beastly acts. "We will punish the masterminds swiftly and indeed very painfully." There is now a stand-off between the Kenyan military and police and the remaining attackers. Stand-off Al-Shabab has claimed there are at least 36 hostages, but this cannot be independently confirmed. There are also likely to be people hiding away from the attackers. The government's emergency response committee, Cobra, has met twice to discuss the attacks. David Cameron: "We have to brace ourselves for more bad news" The Foreign Office said a rapid deployment team had been sent from London to Nairobi to provide consular support, staff from Addis Ababa in neighbouring Ethiopia had also been sent to Nairobi and the UK High Commission in Nairobi had consular staff near the shopping centre site and at nearby hospitals. The Labour Party conference in Brighton held a minute's silence for the three British victims. Party leader Ed Miliband said the "terrible attack reminds us all of the continuing need for vigilance from our security services and ongoing international cooperation in the battle against terrorism". The attack began at about 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Saturday, when the militants entered the Westgate centre, throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons. A children's day was being held at the time - children are among those reported killed. Witnesses report seeing many bodies strewn round tables of unfinished fast food - with pop music left playing in the background. Some witnesses said the militants told Muslims to leave and said non-Muslims would be targeted. Inside Somalia, Tabda, Kenyan troops pursuing the Al Shabaab ragtag militia had their first reported face - to - face combat with the terror gang, in a fierce fire fight that left 9 insurgents dead and 2 Kenyan soldiers wounded. As operation 'Linda Nchi' entered its 12th day, military spokesperson major Emmanuel Chirchir said the two injured Kenyan soldiers had been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment. But, as the battle in Tabda raged on, foreign affairs assistant minister Richard Onyonka told journalists this evening that the Kenya Government was able and willing to negotiate with the Al Shabaab, but quickly threw in a caveat...that the terror gang had to first renounce violence. Sylvia Chebet has more on this developing story.
Terrorist behind Kenyan shopping mall massacre killed in US drone strike The US said today it had killed the leader of al-Shabaab, the Somali terrorist group responsible for massacring dozens in a Kenyan shopping last year. The White House called the death of Ahmed Godane "a major symbolic and operational loss" for al-Qaeda's largest and deadliest affiliate in Africa. US drones struck inside of Somalia on Monday in an effort to kill Godane but American intelligence was not able to immediately confirm whether the operation was a success. That confirmation came Friday in a statement from the Pentagon. "We have confirmed that Ahmed Godane, the co-founder of al-Shabaab, has been killed. The US military undertook operations against Godane on September 1, which led to his death," a spokesman said. Godane, who was in his late thirties, took over al-Shabaab after a US strike killed his predecessor in 2008. The well-educated Somali also spoke Arabic and was known as a charismatic orator and a lover of poetry. After becoming the group's emir, an Islamic term for ruler, Godane made a formal pledge of allegiance to al-Qaeda and his group became one of the terror network's most violent offshoots. There been tensions within the group since Godane took the helm and he has no heir apparent, meaning his death may lead to organisation chaos for the terror organisation. Al-Shabaab has caused terror throughout the Horn of Africa, fighting constantly against the Ethiopian military and getting involved in piracy. Its most high-profile attack came last year against the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, where gunmen killed more than 60 people over four days of chaos, including four Britons. Al-Shabaab said the attack in Kenya was revenge for the Kenyan military joining an offensive in Ethiopia against Islamist forces. The US has maintained a policy of drone strikes in Somalia since the Bush administration but the attack against a convoy carrying Godane was the most aggressive attack for months. The vehicles were heading toward the coastal town of Barawe, al-Shabaab's main base, when they were struck. Two vehicles were destroyed including one carrying Godane. Police say they have averted a major terrorist attack by arresting ten Al Shabaab suspects among them two female suicide bombers. Inspector general of police David Kimaiyo says the suspects sneaked into the country last month and were planning terror strikes in revenge for Kenya’s involvement in a military campaign to drive the militants out of Somalia. Jacky Maribe has the details.
Two Kenyan soldiers have lost their jobs and been jailed after CCTV footage was realised that appears to show soldiers looting shops during September's terrorist attack in Nairobi's Westgate shopping center; a third solider is still under investigation.
A Kenya military plane has crashed in southern Somalia, the army said, citing "technical problems" while Somalia's al-Shabab fighters claimed they had shot it down. There are reports that the pilot is dead and two members of the crew are missing after Thursday's incident. Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi, reporting from Nairobi, said that the jet came down at around 3:15pm local time, according to a military spokesperson. In a statement, Colonel David Obonyo said the warplane "while returning from a combat mission in Jamaame, southern Somalia, developed technical problems and crashed in the general area of Kismayo". However, a spokesperson from al-Shabab told Al Jazeera that the group had shot down the fighter jet. "There is a big propaganda war going on from both sides," said our correspondent She added that there were no photos or evidence to back either side's claims. Kenyan troops entered southern Somalia three years ago to fight the al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels, later joining an African Union peacekeeping force. They have carried out heavy airstrikes on al-Shabab bases in southern Somalia after the armed group carried out a string of attacks inside Kenya, including two recent massacres of over 60 people. Uhuru Kenyatta, the Kenyan president, has vowed to "intensify the war on terrorism", calling al-Shabab fighters "deranged animals" and blaming them for the death of more than 800 Kenyans. Al-shabab in turn warned they would be "uncompromising, relentless and ruthless" in further attacks.

On 16 October 2011, Kenya's armed forces invaded southern Somalia in the midst of a severe regional famine. Their purpose is to capture the port city of Kismayu and to remove the Al Shabaab Islamist militia from the region. This presentation will review the background to Kenya's military action, setting it in the context of the securitization of development in the wider region of eastern Africa. Refugees still flood across the borders of Ethiopia and Kenya, simultaneously presenting a humanitarian and a security challenge. Famine has been both a cause of the invasion and a cloak behind which its politics can be hidden: issues of international responsibility, and of citizenship and surveillance, loom large. It will be argued that the Kenyan invasion implies a strengthening of sovereignty in this region, through the militarization of politics. The weak states of eastern Africa are being remade at their borders through warfare and conflict. A decade on from 9/11, the global war on terror is having a profound impact upon the region where the threat of al Qaeda first became manifest to the world.
The Kenyan military has launched air strikes against what it says are militant targets in Somalia. It says the raids are in retaliation for the Westgate terror attack, for which Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility. The military says hundreds of militants may have been killed in a camp where its believed they are trained.Robert Nagila reports.

Travel video about destination Kenya. Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell.Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Travel video about destination Nairobi in Kenya. Nairobi is Kenya's busy, expensive yet dangerous capital city. It is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the country's most important and beautiful city and with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost 1,700 metres above sea level. The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the city's tallest building. Canons guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill, a fascinating building that covers much of Kenya's culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the country's flora and fauna. Directly in front of the city gates is the Nairobi National Park, the oldest of all Kenya's nature parks. Groups of ostriches can be seen bathing in the hot sand. A number of springboks stroll around elegantly between scattered rocks and trees that have been uprooted by elephants close to the city's skyline. Nairobi is a metropolis in the 'Realm of The Golden Sun' and is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

Maasai people in Kenya - Kenya Culture - Kenya Tourism & Vacations Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. The Maasai speak Maa (ɔl Maa), a member of the Nilo-Saharan language family that is related to Dinka and Nuer. They are also educated in the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania, Swahili and English. The Maasai population has been reported as numbering 841,622 in Kenya in the 2009 census, compared to 377,089 in the 1989 census. The Tanzanian and Kenyan governments have instituted programs to encourage the Maasai to abandon their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, but the people have continued their age-old customs. Recently, Oxfam has claimed that the lifestyle of the Maasai should be embraced as a response to climate change because of their ability to farm in deserts and scrublands. Many Maasai tribes throughout Tanzania and Kenya welcome visits to their village to experience their culture, traditions, and lifestyle. Culture ====== Maasai society is strongly patriarchal in nature, with elder men, sometimes joined by retired elders, deciding most major matters for each Maasai group. A full body of oral law covers many aspects of behavior. Formal execution is unknown, and normally payment in cattle will settle matters. An out-of-court process is also practiced called 'amitu', 'to make peace', or 'arop', which involves a substantial apology.[30] The Maasai are monotheistic, worshipping a single deity called Enkai or Engai. Engai has a dual nature: Engai Narok (Black God) is benevolent, and Engai Nanyokie (Red God) is vengeful. The "Mountain of God", Ol Doinyo Lengai, is located in northernmost Tanzania. The central human figure in the Maasai religious system is the laibon whose roles include shamanistic healing, divination and prophecy, and ensuring success in war or adequate rainfall. Whatever power an individual laibon had was a function of personality rather than position. Many Maasai have also adopted Christianity. The Maasai are known for their intricate jewelry. A high infant mortality rate among the Maasai has led to babies not truly being recognized until they reach an age of 3 moons, ilapaitin.[33] For Maasai living a traditional life, the end of life is virtually without ceremony, and the dead are left out for scavengers.[34] A corpse rejected by scavengers (mainly spotted hyenas, which are known as Ondilili or Oln'gojine in the Maasai language) is seen as having something wrong with it, and liable to cause social disgrace; therefore, it is not uncommon for bodies to be covered in fat and blood from a slaughtered ox. Burial has in the past been reserved for great chiefs, since it is believed to be harmful to the soil. Traditional Maasai lifestyle centres around their cattle which constitute their primary source of food. The measure of a man's wealth is in terms of cattle and children. A herd of 50 cattle is respectable, and the more children the better. A man who has plenty of one but not the other is considered to be poor. A Maasai religious belief relates that God gave them all the cattle on earth, leading to the belief that rustling cattle from other tribes is a matter of taking back what is rightfully theirs, a practice that has become much less common.[38] All of the Maasai’s needs for food are met by their cattle. They eat the meat, drink the milk and on occasion, drink the blood. Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies. [Though] the Maasai’s entire way of life has historically depended on their cattle... more recently, with their cattle dwindling, the Maasai have grown dependent on food such as sorghum, rice, potatoes and cabbage (known to the Maasai as goat leaves). The men in the Maasai tribe are born and raised to be warriors. They don‘t marry when they are young but instead they stay in the woods.[citation needed] This is the reason[original research?] why there is a great age difference between husbands and their wives, because they are not allowed to marry until they are older (when they have become "elders“) while the women marry when they are young.

All Africa 2015-03-20Kenya ( /ˈkɛnjə/ or /ˈkiːnjə/), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator. With the Indian Ocean to its south-east, it is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya has a land area of 580,000 km2 and a population of nearly 41 million, representing 42 different peoples and cultures. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a significant landmark and second among Africa's highest mountain peaks. Kenya's capital and largest city is Nairobi.
Kenya has a warm and humid climate along its coastline on the Indian Ocean which changes to wildlife-rich savannah grasslands moving inland towards the capital Nairobi. Nairobi has a cool climate that gets colder approaching Mount Kenya, which has three permanently snow-capped peaks. The warm and humid tropical climate reappears further inland towards lake Victoria, before giving way to temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The North Eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake (after Lake Superior in the US and Canada) and the world's largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya is famous for its safaris and diverse world-famous wildlife reserves such as Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park.
