World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, fighting stigma, improving education, mobilizing resources and raising funds to better our response to HIV and AIDS. This was under the World AIDS Day 2014 theme: #Getting2Zero, #EveryonesResponsibility 2.5 million people continue to be infected with HIV each year, with 2,400 young people newly infected every day. Warning: This video contains some explicit footage of a child delivery and a caesarean section. Recently the Mukono Health Centre recieved two volunteers who were going to help out in the hospital for 2,5 months. One of these volunteers was a midwife. Every day she told me the stories about the deliveries in the Health Centre. Besides the fact that she delivered about ten times more babies a month than at her job in a Dutch hospital the conditions wherein these children were delivered was also very different. Interested by her stories and by request of the director of the hospital I decided to go film at the Health Centre for two days. I got the privilege to also be able to film a delivery and a caesarean section. Tragically enough the caesarean section didn't go without complications and it was impossible to save the baby. Plagued with moral and ethical dillema's while editing this movie I finally decided to show the uncensored truth. I hope this short documentary can add to the realisation that a lot has to be done to improve the healthcare in developing countries and to stimulate aid aimed on doing exactly that. This documentary was also made to give healthcare volunteers an idea about the situations they can encounter when volunteering in a small government Health Centre in Uganda. Government health centers rely fully on the financial support of the government. The patients recieve medical care for free, but the resources are very limited. The medical personel in these facilities don't have a lot of modern medical equipment to help their patients so in many cases they have to improvise in order to help people. The Mukono Health Centre sees over 50.000 patients yearly and the maternity unit sees about 700 pregnant women a month. They deliver about 300 monthly. If you are interested in volunteering in this Health Centre or support them in any other way send me a message. If you're interested in volunteering at this hospital or helping out in any other way send me a personal message.
Meet three Ugandan health workers who love their jobs. Agnes, Habiba, and Alex find joy in serving their clients, but they face many challenges—and there are simply not enough health workers to meet the demand. To improve health services, Uganda is focusing on the people that provide quality care. These efforts are paying off and service delivery has improved. Other countries can access the tools and approaches that Uganda has successfully used.
The Population and Poverty (PopPov) Research Network brings together researchers who are examining how population dynamics affect economic outcomes, primarily in African countries. The overarching vision is one of a Network where results, methodological advances, and policy impacts are shared across research teams and eventually translated into policy recommendations. In this interview, PopPov researcher Joseph Babigumira of the University of Washington shares research findings on abortions in Uganda, which are a consequence of the high prevalence of unintended pregnancies, a result of the high level of unmet need for contraception. Since abortion is illegal in Uganda, it is usually performed in clandestine, unhygienic places by undertrained and unskilled practitioners; and is associated with a wide range of complications and myriad health and economic consequences. PRB informs people around the world about population, health and the environment, and empowers them to use that information to advance the well-being of current and future generations. Find out more about PRB at our website, www.prb.org.

The U.S. Embassy Kampala has issued an alert to its citizens warning of the possibility of retaliatory attacks in Uganda by al-Shabaab in response to the U.S. and Ugandan military actions in Somalia last week which killed al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Godane. The warnings two days come ahead of the anniversary of the September 11th attacks in the US. It names the targets for these attacks as hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping malls, diplomatic missions, transportation hubs, religious institutions and government offices. It also asks its citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to improve personal security and avoiding crowded locations. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. In the three years before the attacks of 11 September, Pakistan received approximately US$9 million in American military aid. In the three years after, the number increased to US$4.2 billion, making it the country with the maximum funding post 9/11. Such a huge inflow of funds has raised concerns in the Indian press that these funds were given without any accountability, as the end uses not being documented, and that large portions were used to suppress civilians' human rights and to purchase weapons to contain domestic problems like the Balochistan unrest. Pakistan has stated that India has been supporting terror groups within the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Balochistan with the aim of creating unrest within the country. On 20 May 2007, a conflict began in north Lebanon after fighting broke out between Fatah al-Islam, an Islamist militant organization, and the Lebanese Armed Forces in Nahr al-Bared, a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli. The conflict evolved mostly around the Siege of Nahr el-Bared, but minor clashes also occurred in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon and several bombings took place in and around Lebanon's capital, Beirut. Fatah-al-Islam has been described as a militant mujahid[123] movement that draws inspiration from al-Qaeda.[123] The US provided military aid to the Lebanese government during the conflict. On 7 September 2007, Lebanese government forces captured the camp and declared victory. Analysts describe an unofficial end to the war on terror with President's Obama speech of May 23, 2013. Eugene Robinson, of the Washington Post, interprets that speech as close to a "mission accomplished" declaration that prudent politics will allow.[168] The President said that low-grade terror will continue but "need not rise to the level that we saw on the eve of 9/11."[168] Republicans reject the President's proposals to end measures taken in the name of the "war on terror" and counter that it is too soon to "argue that al Qaeda is quote 'on the run.'"[169] Peter Beinart writing a month after the President's speech, declares that most Americans accept that the "war on terror" has ended.[170] Peter Bergen, CNN's national security analyst, explains that President "Obama intends to end a seemingly endless war" by entering a wind-down phase. Criticism of the War on Terror addresses the issues, morals, ethics, efficiency, economics, and other questions surrounding the War on Terror and made against the phrase itself, calling it a misnomer. The notion of a "war" against "terrorism" has proven highly contentious, with critics charging that it has been exploited by participating governments to pursue long-standing policy / military objectives,[172] reduce civil liberties,[173] and infringe upon human rights. It is argued that the term war is not appropriate in this context (as in War on Drugs), since there is no identifiable enemy, and that it is unlikely international terrorism can be brought to an end by military means.[174] Other critics, such as Francis Fukuyama, note that "terrorism" is not an enemy, but a tactic; calling it a "war on terror", obscures differences between conflicts such as anti-occupation insurgents and international mujahideen. With a military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan and its associated collateral damage Shirley Williams maintains this increases resentment and terrorist threats against the West.[175] There is also perceived U.S. hypocrisy,[176] media induced hysteria,[177] and that differences in foreign and security policy have damaged America's image in most of the world.

Ugandan Authorities Arrest 6 Terror Suspects, Seize Explosives in Raid On Al-Shabab Cell Ugandan Authorities Arrest 6 Terror Suspects, Seize Explosives in Raid On Al-Shabab Cell Ugandan Authorities Arrest 6 Terror Suspects, Seize Explosives in Raid On Al-Shabab Cell At least six terror suspects were arrested over the weekend in a raid on an al-Shabab cell that was apparently plotting an attack in this East African country, a Ugandan military spokesman said Monday. Explosives were seized from the suspects, all of whom are of Somali origin and are currently under interrogation, said Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda. "This is a controlled operation. There could be more arrests," he said, offering no more details. The U.S. Embassy in Uganda said Monday that a possible terrorist attack had been disrupted after warning U.S. citizens on Saturday to stay at home overnight amid an operation to foil a terror plot. "Based on coordination with Ugandan authorities, and taking into account the heightened security measures the government has put in place, we believe that the immediate threat of an al-Shabab attack has been effectively countered," said the statement from the embassy. "We remain vigilant to the possibility that some of the attack cell could still be at large, but we believe that it is appropriate to rescind the guidance to shelter-in-place. We urge, however, that all U.S. citizens maintain heightened security awareness and continue to monitor email and news outlets for any updates." Uganda, which has troops fighting al-Shabab in Somalia, has been on high alert amid concerns the al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists are plotting an attack similar to the assault on a mall in Kenya a year ago.

Uganda ( /juːˈɡændə/ yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Uganda is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by South Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is also shared by Kenya and Tanzania.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala.
The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country. Uganda gained independence from Britain on 9 October 1962.
The official languages are English and Swahili, although multiple other languages are spoken in the country.
