http://www.euronews.com/ The crisis in Cyprus could influence timing of any new talks between the two sides. The small island nation of Cyprus has been divided for almost forty years. A division which led to the Greek Cypriot south joining the EU as the Republic of Cyprus and prospering from this membership. Meanwhile, in the north, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remained isolated after a 2004 referendum on re-uniting the island was turned down by the south. But today the banking crisis has left its impact in the south with businesses closing, banks calling in their loans and unemployment rising. In an ironic twist of fate, the isolated north has been shielded from this crisis because of its very isolation but also because of Turkey which subsidises the northern Cypriot economy to the tune of three billion Turkish liras per year. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus says it can help Cyprus out of its current crisis by working together on gas exploitation off the shores of Cyprus and transferring it through Turkey. Yet this would mean negotiating with Turkey which is still seen as the occupier by many in the south. Euronews traveled to both northern and southern Cyprus to found out whether this crisis could become a catalyst in bringing the two sides back to the negotiating table to help solve one of Europe's oldest conflicts, the division of Cyprus. Kyrenia Castle, at the east end of the old harbour in Kyrenia is a 16th-century castle built by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification. Within its walls lies a twelfth-century chapel showing reused late Roman capitals, and the Shipwreck Museum. Research carried out at the site suggests that the Byzantines built the original castle in the 7th Century to guard the city against the new Arab maritime threat. The first historical reference to the castle occurs in 1191, when King Richard the Lionheart of England captured it on his way to the Third Crusade. After a short period, Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar, and then to his cousin Guy de Lusignan, the former king of Jerusalem. Initially the castle was quite small. John d'Ibelin enlarged it between 1208 and 1211. The Castle's main function was military and the improvements consisted of a new entrance, square and horseshoe-shaped towers, embrasures for archers, and dungeons. QUESTIONS? Travel video about destination Cyprus. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital with an almost circular old town that is completely surrounded by walls from the Venetian period. Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) commemorated their Peace and Freedom Day, with planned celebrations and activities held throughout the country. The island of Cyprus has remained divided into Greek and Turkish sides since a Greek Cypriot coup was followed by a Turkish peace mission to aid Turkish Cypriots in the north in 1974. In February 2014 talks resumed with an aim to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem. Sarah Faris Glubb has more about the celebrations in this report from the capital Lefkosia.
World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Cyprus Travel Guide http://bit.ly/1fhFShE Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Larnaca, which has been the capital of the islands tourism and the gate to Cyprus. The island of the goddess Aphrodite lies in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Its climate is extremely pleasant, its scenery diverse. Beautiful beaches, high mountains, idyllic villages, monasteries decorated with Byzantine murals, busy cities, colorful harbors. There's a good reason why Cyprus has become a favorite vacation spot for tourists. Larnaca has been the capital of the islands tourism and the gate to Cyprus for three main reasons. One of these is its favorable location. Tourists can easily reach the beaches of Napa, the capital Nicosia, the Troodos Mountain or Paphos from here. The second is its international airport, the significance of which has greatly increased since the division of the island. This is where all the charter planes land while the harbor welcomes the ships arriving from Israel and Arabic countries. This is where the one to two day boat trips to Syria and Lebanon set off. There are no trains on the island as the only line was demolished in the 50s. However, the road system is of good quality and public transportation is highly developed. Tourists can also use share taxis or rent cars and motorcycles. Let's not forget that as a heritage of the British governance, cars drive on the left hand side of the road which makes life a little difficult at first but by the time it's time to go home, you'll have become accustomed to it. The city is made up of three distinct parts. The seashore with its modern buildings and beach promenades, the old town and the one time Turkish quarter. The promenade is the site of folklore and art performances. The most beautiful and most important site of Larnaca is the St. Lazarus church. According to John's gospel, Christ resurrected Lazarus who later fled to Cyprus and was the bishop of Kition for 30 years. The church stands on his grave. Lazarus didn't find eternal peace in death as his earthly remains were first taken to Constantinople, now Istanbul and then to Marseilles. All that remains of the ancient city of Kition is a not too large excavation in the northern part of Larnaca. The grave of Lazarus can be seen in the crypt below the church. The sign on his empty sarcophagus reads, friend of Jesus. The church has a central knave, two isles and three domes. There's Byzantine and Latin marks and is still in use today. Grandiose weddings and christenings are held here. The churchyard was a favorite burial site for foreigners especially high ranking Englishmen. Some researchers say that the name Larnaca stems from the ancient Greek word sarcophagus and refers to the tomb of Lazarus. Live from the city of Famagusta in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (disputed zone), I tell the story of how I flew 7,000 miles to see my Namibian girlfriend, lost my #1BAG, and walked across a war zone just to get dumped. Malkovich was conceived on the Pacific island of New Caledonia by his father and his mother, then a bartender at a pub popular with escaped Nazis. She was in labor when Ayatollah Khomeini chased them from Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Malkovich was born extremely shortly thereafter in Christopher Columbus' hometown of Genoa, Italy, where he had his diapers changed regularly by Miss Italy 1978. Ronald Reagan almost bombed his elementary school in Libya, killing Colonel Qaddafi’s “daughter” instead. He moved to Los Angeles during the 1992 riots, where he heard Ice Cube's Death Certificate album, rode the Northridge Earthquake, and formed BLX, a kind of pre-internet Odd Future with more grand larceny. He left NYC a week before the Twin Towers came down, London a week before the Tube bombings, and Istanbul a week before Kurds blew up the city square. He left Jamaica two days before Hurricane Gustav, and slept on a church floor in Louisiana and ate Red Cross gumbo for three days with 300 people after losing an important backpack in Hurricane Katrina. He flew over Russia to Malaysia five days before Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Russia. His father’s a gem hunter who hates islands. He once fell asleep on a train and woke up in Spain. His best friend is a dirty cop in Belize City whose name came up during a Google search on Amnesty International's most wanted list. He lost his favorite hat in Hat Gai, Thailand, dodging rebels who blew up a local McDonalds. URB gave his first album Skeletons one and a half stars out of five. A kid from North Hollywood has lyrics from the same album tattooed on his chest. He impersonated dead North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il for an entire EP (listen). On January 1, 2012 he gave up his home and possessions to travel indefinitely until “something enormous happens”. He relocated to Namibia to record an album with Becoming Phill, a producer he met on Twitter, and subsequently did the same with Esa FunkPrez in Italy and Mute Speaker in the UK. He has worked with House Shoes, Dibia$e, Computer Jay, P.U.D.G.E. and Prince Po of Organized Konfusion. Gilles Peterson kicked off his BBC Best of Hip-Hop 2009 mix with a Malkovich verse. DJ Premier, The Wake Up Show and The Source support his new album Great Expectations of which Hit The Floor Magazine says “genre-resuscitating… Malkovich is owning everyone in the current scene, and you better believe it.” He's working on a book based on Before The Chador, a collection of photos of his family in 1970s pre-revolution Iran which was featured on BBC, PBS and The Atlantic. He's also creator of Heverly Bills T-shirts, "for when your bills are beyond heavy".
Featured by UrbanTV Cyprus Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UrbanIncCY Documentary info - "Cyprus Still Divided" finally reveals the web of domestic politics, the realpolitik of Henry Kissinger, and repeated refusal of successive U.S. presidents to demand that the rule of law and fundamental human rights be upheld in Cyprus. For example, the documentary presents a recently declassified 1974 State Department memorandum that clearly indicts Secretary of State Kissinger, who wrote, "There is no American reason why the Turks should not have one-third of Cyprus." "Newly-released information about U.S. policy toward Cyprus, such as the declassified State Department memorandum written by Secretary Kissinger, sheds new light on the 36-year-old issue and the public must be made aware," said Executive Director Nick Larigakis. "The documentary accomplishes this task by presenting the facts in a clear and concise manner." "Cyprus Still Divided" also looks to the future of the divided island in the context of the ongoing settlement negotiations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community that began in September 2008. The documentary says: "By abandoning the rule of law and its principles, the United States had a role in causing the present division of Cyprus. It remains to be seen whether the U.S. can perform a role in reunifying Cyprus." - AHI

The Guardian 2015-02-09The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), commonly called Northern Cyprus, is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern part of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the north east, westward to Morphou Bay and Cape Kormakitis (the Kokkina/Erenköy exclave marks the westernmost extent of the area), and southward to the village of Louroujina/Akıncılar. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital of both states.
Tensions between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations in Cyprus culminated in 1974 with a coup d'état, an attempt to annex the island to Greece, and an invasion by Turkey in response. This resulted in the partitioning of the island, the resettlement of many of its inhabitants, and a unilateral declaration of independence by the north in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.
Cyprus i/ˈsaɪprəs/ (Greek: Κύπρος, Kýpros, IPA: [ˈcipɾos]; Turkish: Kıbrıs, IPA: [ˈkɯbɾɯs]), officially the Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, Kypriakī́ Dīmokratía, IPA: [cipɾiaˈci ðimokɾaˈtia]; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti, IPA: [ˈkɯbɾɯs dʒumhuɾijeˈti]), is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, east of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria, Lebanon, northwest of Israel and north of Egypt. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and the Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the European Union.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates back to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, which has been declared a World Heritage Site with an "enhanced protection" status in the event of armed conflict by UNESCO, along with the archaeological sites of Paphos and the Painted Churches of the Troodos Region. Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world.
