The story of Algeria's past, present and future - from independence to the Arab Spring and beyond. Algeria was under French colonial rule for 132 years. From tears of joy at independence in 1962 to the tragic civil war of the 1990s and the anger that culminated in the Arab Spring, this series provides a unique insight into a country notoriously inaccessible to both journalists and filmmakers. Interviews with key players like Ben Bella, Ait Ahmed and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, cover 50 years of tragic and powerful history from the Evian Accords of 1962 to the Arab Spring of 2011. This is the story of Algeria's past, present and future. Produced by Flach Film. Authoritarian Era In 1962, Algeria proclaimed independence from France following eight years of war and over a century of colonial rule. The Algerian war of independence, and the negotiations that followed, spurred decades of political assassinations, coups, terrorist attacks and civil war. Hundreds of thousands of Europeans fled the country, but many Algerians who fought alongside the French during the war were left behind. Harkis, as they were called, faced torture and execution at the hands of fellow Algerians. Under the rule of its first elected president, Ahmed Ben Bella, Algeria adopted a socialist single-party political system. One year after independence, the country of nine million was poor, starving and war-torn.

Algeria Travel Video Guide After a decade of conflict the situation improved slightly, and some access to the southern Sahara region has been possible in the last couple of years. Algeria is one of the most fascinating countries in North Africa.Algeria Travel Video Guide in the dramatic Unesco-listed Tassili N'Ajjer and Hoggar regions, near the town of Tamanrasset, tribal culture is very much alive, and the day-to-day hassle common to many Arab countries is conspicuously absent. Algiers contains a vivid mix of tradition and modernism, its colonial past maintaining a presence. Timimoun embodies the storybook oasis town of the Sahara, and the welcoming town of In Salah is split in two by a creeping sand dune. Take a tour of Monument of the Martyrs in Algeria -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The Monument of Martyrs is a towering emblem of Algiers' citizens who fought and died for freedom from French rule. Its opening exhibition in 1982 observed the 20th anniversary of Algiers' independence. Constructed as three standing palm leaves, the concrete edifice shelters the city's eternal flame. Each palm leaf's base is guarded by a statue of an Algerian soldier to express the city's great struggle. The monument stands over three hundred feet tall, making it one of Algiers' most notable landmarks. A reminder of Algiers' victory, the soaring structure can be seen from anywhere in the city.

Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso. Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying. The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added. Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said. "In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said. The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair. In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said. Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported. Morocco Travel Guide 2015, Morocco Tourism & Vacations 2015, Morocco Trip 2015 Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Morocco is a North African country that has a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Western Sahara to the south, Algeria to the east and the Spanish North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast in the north. It is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar. See in Morocco ================== At just a few hours from the main European cities, Morocco has everything to overwhelm you with the amazing colors, smells and sounds of Islamic Africa. Imagine bustling souqs and spice markets, stunning mosques, white-washed sea side towns and medieval city centres. With panoramic views varying from snow-covered peaks in the High Atlas to the endless sand dunes of the Sahara, no-one ever has to be bored in this beautiful country. Movie-famous Casablanca might be the most famous of Moroccan cities and is home to the huge Hassan II mosque, the second largest mosque in the world with only the Grand Mosque of Mecca surpassing it. Many travellers quickly leave this vibrant and modernist metropolis on a search for a more traditional Moroccan experience, but admiring the impressive colonial architecture, Hispano-Moorish and art-deco outlook of the city centre is actually time well spent. Marrakesh, known as the "Red City" and probably the most prominent former imperial capital, will leave you with memories to cherish for life. Spend your days wandering through the lively souqs, admiring the old gates and defensive walls, see the Saadian Tombs, the remnants of the El Badi Palace and visit the Koutoubia Mosque with its 12th century minaret. However, when evening falls make sure to head back to Jamaa el-Fnaa, the largest square in Africa, as it fills up with steam-producing food stalls. Indulge in the bustling activity there, listen to Arabic story tellers, watch magicians and Chleuh dancers. Fez, once Morocco's capital, is another gorgeous imperial city. Get lost in its lovely labyrinth of narrow Medieval streets, enjoy its huge medina, see the beautiful city gates, the ancient University of Al-Karaouine and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Also, make sure to visit a traditional leather tanning factory. The city of Meknes is often called the "Versailles of Morocco" for its beauty. Its lovely Spanish-Moorish style centre is surrounded by tall city walls with impressive gates and you'll be able to see the 17th century blend of European and Islamic cultures even today. For a more laid-back experience of city life, catch a sea breeze at Asilah or lovely Essaouira. The blue-washed town of Chefchaouen is an old time travellers' favourite and a great starting point to explore the impressive High Atlas Mountains. Climb Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North-Africa, passing lovely adobe villages and exploring the gorgeous Ourika and Amizmiz valleys on the way. The stunning panoramic view from the top will make it worth every bit of your effort to get there. Other praised hiking routes lead through the beautiful Ameln Valley in the Anti-Atlas and the wooded Rif Mountains in the very north. Hop on a camel back for a trip through the golden Sahara sand dunes at Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga. Spend the night in a desert tent, under the incredibly starred sky. The Sahara is also accessible near the town of Zagora; it's easier to get to from Marrakech but doesn't have the imposing dunes of Erg Chebbi. Somewhat less easy to reach but therefor also less crowded are the dunes of Erg Chigaga near M'hamid. On your way to the desert, make sure not to miss the stunning Todra gorge near Tinghir. The ancient fortified city of Aït-Benhaddou is another must-see sight. Although rainstorms damage the mud-brick kasbahs time and again, this mostly abandoned village remains an impressive sight and has been the decor for a range of movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. Do in Morocco ================ Hammams ======== There are two types of Hammam (steam baths) across Morocco. The first is the tourist hammam, where you can go and be pampered and scrubbed by an experienced staff member. As these are promoted only to tourists they are the more expensive option with pricing usually around DH 150 for a hammam. They can not be technically referred to as a proper hammam, but they are nonetheless enjoyable, especially for the timid. Your hotel can recommend a good one. The second option is to visit a "popular" Hammam. Popular hammams are the places where the locals go. Ask the staff at your hotel where they would go.

Vast country (2,381,741 km2), Algeria has, over 1800 km from north to south, a succession of contrasting areas. The northern portion forms a border, only 600 km wide, bordering the Mediterranean. Algeria is the "useful", strongly marked by human presence since ancient times. It is raised by parallel bars Tell Atlas and Sahara, which enclose a region of high plains. South of the border on some 1,600 km deep, spreads the vast Sahara desert, raised southeast by the Hoggar massif. The Mediterranean coastline stretches over 1,200 km; it is bordered by hills and mountains, including the Kabyle chain culminating at 2308 m Djurdjuran. On the back of these reliefs is a narrow floodplain rosary hardly communicating with one another and rarely open to the sea which was able to develop, sometimes significant modifications, may modern agriculture. They are, from east to west, the plain of Annaba, Mitidja (around Algiers), the plain of the valley Cheliff, that of Sig around Oran, then further inland, those Muaskar, Sidi-bel-Abbes and Tilimsen. South of the plains, the Tell Atlas unfolds parallel to the shore a succession of sedimentary folds behind which lie to the west, high semi-desert plains punctuated chotts (vast depressions saline lands and sometimes flooded) and to the east, the more narrow space of the high plains of Constantine. In the south, the Saharan Atlas, formed Ksour Mountains, Jebel Amur and mountains of Ouled Nail, not a continuous barrier. It does not mark the limit under Mediterranean influences; This is where the trees were planted a "green dam" to stop the advance of the desert. The eastern extension of the Saharan Atlas, the massif of the Aures, south of Constantine, rises to 2,328 meters Jebel Chelia. It is the largest of the Algerian mountains, where the ways of life really are influenced by altitude. Beyond lie the primary relief Sahara succession broad plains dotted with dunes called ergs (Great Western Erg, Grand Erg Oriental Erg Chech), salt-covered depression - sebkhas - from hamadas (cutlery trays rock) as the set of Tademaït or tassilis Ajjer and Hoggar, and high mountains (volcanic Hoggar mountains rising to 3000 m at Mount Tahats).

No country I visited until now has the power of the Algerian desert at sunset and sunrise. Colors certainly play a big role, and the view on the dunes and the rocks getting golden, orange and pink, under a sky becoming of an increasingly deeper blue, is mesmerizing. The beauty of the Algerian desert is indescribable. Impossible not to feel the power of nature. What makes however sunset and sunrise perfect in the Algerian desert is the silence, the vastness, the eyes looking to infinity and the strong feeling of how small we are. There’s no better way to experience the desert than sleeping in a tent, faraway from the resorts, the skylark of people and the light pollution, preventing to see the amazing african night sky in all its splendour. I still long the week I spent in the Akakus desert, the cold nights, the fantastic food prepared by the Tuaregs at our itinerant camp. The Sahara is one of the most fascinating environments on the earth. A place impossible to forget.

Berbers and Arabs dominate the history of Algeria, but the country also has a splendid remnant of the Roman civilization. It is not very convenient to reach Timgad, but the grand spectacle of the town and fortification built there some two thousand years ago, makes the rigors of Algeria travel worthwhile. The entire area is about one thousand meters above sea level, so it is pleasant even during the hotter months. The countryside around Timgad is desolate, and serves as an object lesson for the benefits of conservation, for it was once a thriving eco-system. While some of the taller structures such as the famous victory arch strike the eye at first glance, it is the layout and planning of Timgad which is more impressive after one spends some time amidst the ruins. The spirits of the Berbers must repent at having laid waste to Timgad, for they destroyed a precious asset for themselves! Whatever remains of the Roman settlement is due to the absence of any habitation for centuries, rather than because of the conscious efforts to preserve the community which once lived here. Even the most patriotic citizen of Algeria will feel bad after spending time at Timgad, that such a splendid settlement has been needlessly destroyed. Many modern cities lack the foresight of the people who planned Timgad. This applies as much to Batna, which Timgad visitors have to use as a base station, as to comparable towns which are outside Algeria. Timgad was laid out in grid fashion, which must have made it as easy to locate addresses as in the Manhattan of today! The other impressive aspect of Timgad is how the planners catered to diverse needs in their layout. Though Timgad was meant to be a fortification of the Romans against the Berbers, it also had a theater where people could enjoy the performing arts. It is ironic that the theater is in use to this day, and one of the more pleasant aspects of a Timgad visit. Visitors who are not conversant with biology may find claims of the agricultural bio-diversity of Timgad unbelievable today. The desert has clearly taken over, and is the victor as much as the Berbers! The land around Timgad was served by melted snow from the mountains in which the settlement nestles, and was once full of wild flora and fauna, and suitable for growing a wide range of crops. The loss of tree cover must have been primarily responsible for destruction of habitats, and the tragic reality of today. Timgad seems to be a symbol of the essential predicament in which Algeria finds itself today! Tags: timgad, berbers, arabs, roman, travel, eco-system, batna
