Hundreds rally in Newark for Trayvon Martin, chanting ‘no justice, no peace’ By Jessica Calefati and Dan Goldberg/The Star-Ledger

NEWARK — Their reasons were universal and personal; their cause common and intensely private.

The hundreds of people who endured 95-degree temperatures in Newark this afternoon to protest the verdict of the George Zimmerman murder trial were there because of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old Zimmerman killed last year.

But they were also there for their own communities, their own families, their own sons.

A rally was held in Newark to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The rally on Market and Broad streets was held by People’s Organization for Progress.

The group says that the work King did is threatened with what they call attacks on organized labor.

A group gathered on West 3rd Street in Plainfield on Saturday and marched from Grant Avenue to Monroe Avenue in protest of the street violence that has been plaguing the city. Plainfield has already had five murders this year and is on track to eclipse its current record of 15 killings recorded in 2005.
