Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk The Guatemalan general who led the country through the bloodiest period of its long civil war, Efrain Rios Montt, has been jailed for 80 years for genocide and crimes against humanity in the early 1980s. The judge said violence, rape and starvation had been used as weapons of war against indigenous communities suspected of aiding left-wing guerrillas.
***This report contains some disturbing images*** An undercover BBC investigation into conditions at a mental health institution in Guatemala has revealed patient suffering and abuse at the hands of those meant to care for them. Federico Mora Hospital has been described by campaigners as the world's most abusive and dangerous mental health institution. In 2012, Guatemala was ordered by an American Human Rights Commission to make emergency improvements to the Federico Mora Hospital to "save lives". The government promised to comply. But an undercover BBC investigation found little has changed. The government defends conditions in the hospital, says it has begun improving mental health care in the country and has ordered an investigation into sexual abuse claims. Guatemala City's La Aurora airport remained closed due to ash that had fallen on the runway. Ash had stopped falling on the city, the volcano institute said, warning however that columns of soot could still drift back towards the city. The Fuego volcano, whose name means fire in English, spewed large columns of ash on Saturday, prompting an orange alert and forcing nearby residents to wear protective masks. Officials issued a warning to the country's civil aviation agency, and flights were halted as a result. The nation's natural disaster agency, meanwhile, advised people to remain on alert in case the volcanic activity increases. The Guatemalan seeks to be removed from OFAC in short order. On May 22, 2014, it was indicated that Chacon had been arrested in the Bahamas and immediately extradited to Miami. Another version of the story suggested that Chacon had been brought to justice . Also, Chacón talked about how Peter Zimery had been responsible for the accusations brought against her regarding any potential links to drug trafficking. With Zimery, she had a working relationship, where she co-invested in an energy company serving the Chimaltenango some time ago. According to her, the problem emerged when the company founded Zimery went bankrupt and he failed to pay his debts to international banks and her. Marllory plans to be back in Guatemala very soon.

A speech by Bishop Álvaro Leonel Ramazzini Imeri from San Marcos in Guatemala, CIDSE Conference 13 & 14 September 2011 With regard to 'inclusive growth' Bishop Ramazzini draws attention to issues such as the ecological limits of our planet, the role of extractive industries, the quality of life of the poor, and the role of volunteering and domestic work of women. Moreover, Ramazzini questions whether putting the 'green economy' into practice will imply a change in our consumption and an honest redistribution of wealth. He also wonders whether the EU will be able to be more coherent in its policies to support development; stopping subsidies to its farmers, supporting regulations on land use, rethinking Free Trade Agreements and reconsidering migration policies.

A snapshot of Guatemala's culture as experienced on The Village Chapel's July 2007 missions trip. Song by Judson Spence. Photography by Christiev Alphin, Gregory Byerline, and David Perry. In response to several comments and inquiries, please note that this is only a snapshot of the Guatemalan culture that we experienced while there. This is not intended to be a complete illustration of all of Guatemala. We visited only a small part of southwestern Guatemala and spent our time in two villages and one city. Finally, the "Guatemala Facts" were compiled through several encyclopedia sources with documented the validity of that information. www.thevillagechapel.com www.judsonspence.com
http://davidsbeenhere.com/ In this episode of DBH Unplugged, David brings us into the town of Chichicastenango after a bumpy ride in on the local 'chicken bus'. Known for their large covered markets, David takes us on a colorful tour through the vendors selling clothes, backpacks, art, fruit, veggies, textiles and more, with a few tips on haggling with the local sellers. Take a walk through the town's history alongside the murals painted on the market walls, or simply wander the lanes of endless shopping for a great local experience. If you feel the pangs if hunger, stop at the local Atole vendor, where you can try some of the traditional hot corn beverage that will definitely hold you over until your next meal. Visit this 16th Century market any day of the week, or visit Thursday and Sunday to check out its nylon market. For more information on visiting this colorful historic market, check out the DBH Guide to Guatemala, also available for your Kindle. Travel with me at http://blog.davidsbeenhere.com/

To donate to this photo book and cultural preservation project, please visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/585522303/qeqchi-maya-photo-project-guatemala-a-photo-book The Project: The photo book will be an 11x14 inch format book (The soft cover will be the largest landscape format book that can still have integrity-the same size or smaller than 11x14 inches). The layout will be photographs of Q'eqchi's working, their portraits, and any moving images accompanied by short interviews with the people. Occasional landscapes will appear to provide a context. Above and to the right you will see their original words in Q'eqchi' and below you will have their English translation. Any stories pertinent to explain who the Q'eqchi' people are will be included. This book would be perfect for any coffee table or waiting room. It will be a somewhat simple read with the focal aspect being the photographs. My name is Tayler and I speak Q'eqchi'. I spent two years in the Polochic Valley of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala teaching, lending service, and learning the language. The people of the Polochic Valley speak Q'eqchi', a Mayan language, with only 800,000 native speakers worldwide. Being there changed my life forever. All of the photos you see in the video were taken with a point and shoot camera while I was there. This time I will have my full frame DSLR. Not only is the region mind-bogglingly beautiful, the people are incredible. They are some of the most humble, meek, loving, and peaceful people I have ever met. Their generosity would leave me reeling. Even if they had no food for themselves they would insist on feeding me dinner. My perspectives regarding wealth and the material were forever altered. Despite their living in reed-walled homes with tin roofs, they were the happiest people I have yet to meet. There was always a smile, always a joke. Everybody talked to everybody ESPECIALLY if you were a stranger-and believe me, at 6'3", blond and very white-I was definitely a stranger. Being of Mayan descent, the cultural heritage of the Q'eqchi' people is very rich. I want to show it to you. In picture and in word I will bring the images of these amazing people to you accompanied by their perspectives and thoughts. They changed how I think, they can do they same for you. Recently the country of Guatemala has completed a paved road into the remote valley in which these people live. The majority of the Q'eqchi's do not know any Spanish. With the road completed, access to the valley has become easier thus bringing in outside culture more easily. Albeit advantageous to learn Spanish for these humble people, I fear that their culture will soon be diluted. Time is running out to capture the true essence of the Q'eqchi' Mayans. Help me immortalize at least a portion of their legacy. Challenges exist in any endeavor. I have felt for some time now that I should compile images of these incredible people. While learning Q'eqchi' I faced some pretty overwhelming circumstances. They didn't stop me. I am now fluent in the language and I am a better person because of it. I view this project as an extension of my original experience in Guatemala. I am determined. Nothing will stop this project from happening :)

Entry from: Panajachel, Guatemala Entry Title: "Lago de Atitlan" Entry: "We made our way via shuttle van for a 2 1/2 hour ride to Guatemala's most dramatic region-the highlands and our first stop along the route "Lago de Atitlan (Lake Atitlan)". Here the verdant hills sport emerald green grass, cornfields and towering stands of pine, with each village telling its own story of history and culture. Our home base was the largest city around the lake "Panajachel." We spend a few days walking, window shopping, drinking coffee and eating. Than taking the local ferry service (which is the only way to reach some of the villages along the lake) for a stop at "Santiago Atitlan" and "San Pedro La Laguna." I have included a short video (Note: you have to click on the video to see it, it will not run under the slideshow function) of one of the activities we found on the streets. Many opportunities for pictures of the local people, their dress and the way it looks to shop for food at the market. The traditional values and customs of the countries indigenous peoples are strongest here in the highlands. Maya dialects are the 1st language, Spanish a distant second. We seems to continue to work magic in creating our own form of communications via English, Spanish and hand signals!" Guatemala has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Latin American, a rate which increases significantly among the rural indigenous populations. As such, the Guatemalan Red Cross has identified maternal and child health as a priority area of work. One of the areas where the GRC's Maternal and Child Health program is currently being carried out is the western Department of San Marcos, with the support of the Norwegian Red Cross. The branch volunteers help to organize the women of the communities in support groups, to help each other learn about good practices relating to feeding and nutrition, prevention of illness, prenatal control, and the healthy development of children. Community health committees are formed and meet regularly to analyse the health situation of the community and to take actions to make improvements. Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigenous identity in the hemisphere. Guatemala today is very much a synthesis of Maya and colonial traditions, fused with the omnipresent influences of twenty-first century Latin and North American culture. Baroque churches dating back to the Spanish Conquest coexist with pagan temples that have been sites of worship for millennia. Highland street markets prosper alongside vast glitzy shopping malls, and pre-Columbian festival dances are performed by teenage hip-hop fans. Positive feedback of Miami’s Latino Community leaders about Guatemala’s private medical services with prices 60% to 70% lower than in the U.S. but with similar high quality of care, as an option for elective surgeries and medical/dental treatments. The Guatemalan Consulate together with members of Guatemala’s Health & Wellness Tourism sector jointly organized this P.R. event at the SOFITEL Miami to present Guatemala as medical travel destination to business and Community leaders of South Florida. The luncheon was sponsored by the Guatemala tourist Board (INGUAT), the Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT) and the Trade and Investment Program of the Guatemalan Ministry of Economy (PACIT). This was the first time that Keith Johnson, Corporate Healthcare Consultant to Guatemala and President of Stop-Loss Brokerage, introduced the “Latin American Preferred Health Plan” (LAPHP) to the Guatemalan business Community of Florida. During the same event, attendees were able to network with U.S.-Guatemalan Physicians, Guatemalan Specialists in cosmetic and rehabilitative dentistry and with the managers of Travel Agency “ConExpress”, Hot-Springs Spa Resort “Santa Teresita” and Medical Travel Facilitator “Medical Tourism Guatemala”, all active members of the Guatemalan Exporters Association who have partnered with U.S.-based insurance organizations via Stop-Loss Brokerage to promote a U.S. corporate health plan (= LAPHP) designed to offer to employees a medical travel option to Guatemala’s private medical network, allowing significant savings in claims on elective surgical and medical procedures, while maintaining permanent access to a U.S. medical network.

Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color. Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish. It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compelling place for travellers. Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. Guatemala City Travel Guide: Guatemala City is located in the department (territorial division) of Guatemala, and it's the capital of the country. All the main highways start at Kilómetro 0, located inside Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace), in Centro Histórico (Historic Center). Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemala had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 million people, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala. It can be interesting to visit "Guate," as it is also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often with few tourists. Sunday evenings' gatherings of hundreds of locals at the main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience. It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the city's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala City such a compelling place for travellers. Guatemala City Travel Video - Guatemalas capital city, the largest urban agglomeration in Central America, spreads across a flattened mountain range run through by deep ravines. Lets just say that there are more beautiful places on earth. Depending on who you talk to, Guate (as its known) is either big, dirty, dangerous and utterly forgettable or big, dirty, dangerous and fascinating. Either way, theres no doubt that theres an energy here unlike that found in the rest of Guatemala, and the extremes that categorize the whole country are in plain view. Its a place where dilapidated buses belch fumes next to Beamers and Hummers, where skyscrapers drop shadows on shantytowns and immigrants from the countryside and the rest of Central America eke out a meager existence, barely noticed by the countrys elite. This is the real cultural capital of Guatemala -- the writers, the thinkers, the artists mostly live and work here. All the best museum pieces go to the capital, and while nearly every city dweller dreams of getting away to Antigua or Monterrico for the weekend, this is where they spend most of their time, a fact reflected in the growing sophistication of the restaurant and bar scene. Wonderful Guatemala City Travel Video
Cruises To Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala - Visit Santo Tomas De Castilla ( Matías de Gálvez) Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala. It is located at around 15°41′20″N 88°36′45″WCoordinates: 15°41′20″N 88°36′45″W. It lies at Amatique Bay off the Gulf of Honduras and is administratively a part of Puerto Barrios. Cruises To Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala ========================= In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here.[5] Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua. Belgian colony ============= In the 1840s Santo Tomás was settled by Belgians in a colonial enterprise after the European nation supported Rafael Carrera in his drive for independence of the country. Belgium supported Rafael Carrera as he led Guatemala to independence. The territory was authorized in 1843 "in perpetuity" by the Guatemalan parliament to be administered by the Compagnie belge de colonisation, a private Belgian company under the protection of King Leopold I of Belgium. It replaced the failed British Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company. Many of the Belgians who settled there died of yellow fever and malaria, which were endemic to the region. Most were buried in a Belgian cemetery near Matias de Gálvez, which still existed in the 1960s. In 1854 the Belgian company withdrew because of financial losses.

Blog | http://www.aperezvoyages.com Instagram | JerseyBoy88 Facebook Page | https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Perez-Voyages/287145441393779 Day 1: San Pedro 3:58 Day 2: Snorkeling 12:30 Day 3: Belize City 22:22, Xunantunich 31:45, Cahal Pech 40:40 Day 4: Entering Guatemala This was not only my first trip to Central America but my first backpacking trip. This trip was a huge breakthrough in my vision of travel as I have spend the past year evolving my passion and desire for travel. It was suppose to be two plus ones, however my mom didn't make it because of school. So my step father and I happily flew into the beautiful countries of Belize and Guatemala, Two completely different yet diverse lands with amazing people. Although Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America, it is a mixing pot of English, Spanish, Mayan, and coastal Garifuna cultures. Belize is a good mashup of tourist and backpacker all in one. After flying into Belize Citys airport out the outskirts of the city, we took a cab to the Belize City Water Taxi terminal. From here we took about an hour boat ride to Caye Caulker en route to our island, Ambergris Caye where San Pedro is. San Pedro so far was the most relaxing and most laid back place I have ever been to. WHen they say take it slow, they mean it as time nearly seized to exist and our time there seemed to last longer than we thought, GOOD. We spend half of our second day strolling the beaches, walking around town where all they primarily drive is golf carts, and finally went snorkeling in Shark Alley with sharks, turtles, and fish. Third day we left the relaxation of the island behind, headed for Belize City and took our first 3 hour chicken bus across Belize for San Ignacio. Although uncomfortable, the bus ride costed us a whopping $4. Once we finally arrived in San Ignacio, we settled in our cozy hotel and took a cab ride over to the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, 15 to 20 minutes from the Guatemala border and the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, outside the city. Considering the distance, we walked from Cahal Pech through the small town of San Ignacio to catch dinner and finally head back to our hotel. Instead of our fourth day cave diving or tubing, we cancelled those plans and headed straight for the Guatemalan border to spend the next five days there before heading back home. Belize is an amazing country for it's size. It not only offers great tourism but offers foreigners the opportunity to buy land for retirement. As for backpackers, Belize is the most if not one of the more expensive countries in Central America. However, the experience between relaxing on a Belizean beach or hiking up a Mayan pyramid is something that you truly can never forget. For a small English speaking nation in Central America, Belize is Unbelizable. Can you Belize it? :) Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Hope you enjoy and happy travels! Video production and assembly is not professional, strictly for fun. :) Enjoy Iphone 4S and GoPro Songs: Belize You Born Deh - Lord Rhaburn Combo Village Gyal - ? Oh, Tikal. How I loved you and how I hated you. This part of Guatemala was quite the adventure for us. From a failed sunrise tour, to EPIC sunset shots, to a sketchy awful tour guide who tried to screw us, to the heat, the elation, the wonder and awe...it was literally everything wrapped in 14 hours. I was insanely tired but also insanely excited. We got some amazing footage, but it was a huge challenge to get it (carrying all that equipment! AHHH!). All in all, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, but I would do things a little differently. I'll lay it all out for you guys so you can learn from my mistakes, and the things we did right! -Nathalie (All videos filmed, edited, and produced by yours truly) Where we stayed: Posada Del Cerro in El Remate - HIGHLY recommend http://www.posadadelcerro.com/ What we booked: Tikal sunrise tour AND sunset tour through Posada Del Cerro, who works with San Juan Travel. Visit Quirigua National Park, Guatemala (HD) - Trip to Quirigua National Park, Guatemala Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua ------------------------------ Inhabited since the 2nd century A.D., Quirigua had become during the reign of Cauac Sky (723–84) the capital of an autonomous and prosperous state. The ruins of Quirigua contain some outstanding 8th-century monuments and an impressive series of carved stelae and sculpted calendars that constitute an essential source for the study of Mayan civilization. Outstanding Universal Value Brief Synthesis The Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua is located in the Department of Izabal in Guatemala. The inscribed property is comprised of 34 hectares of land dedicated exclusively to the conservation of the ancient architecture and the seventeen monuments that were carved between 426 AD and 810 AD and make up this great city. Quirigua is one of the major testimonies to the Mayan civilization. For reasons which are not clear, it then entered a period of decline. It is known that, at the time of the arrival of the European conquerors, the control of the jade route had been taken over by Nito, a city closer to the Caribbean coast. Although Quirigua has retained ruins and vestiges of dwellings ranging between AD 200 and AD 900, most of the monuments that ensure Quirigua its world-wide reknown date from the 8th century, the period during which the city was entirely remodelled in accordance with its function as royal residence and administrative centre. At the core of Quiriqua is the Great Plaza, the largest known public space in the entire Maya area. The monumental complexes which are set out around the Great Plaza, the Ceremonial Plaza and the Plaza of the Temple are remarkable for the complexity of their structure - a highly elaborate system of pyramids, terraces, and staircases which results in a complete remodelling of the natural relief and which creates a singular dimension as at Copan. The artful production of monolithic stone monuments, carved in sandstone without the use of metal tools, is outstanding. The monuments, called stelae, contain hieroglyphic texts describing significant calendar dates, celestial events such as eclipses, passages of Maya mythology and political events, as well as important social and historic events to the development of the city. Not only does this text give a better understanding of the rise and fall of Quirigua, but also describes the span of time between 426 AD to 810 AD making it possible to reconstruct parts of Mayan history. During its brief time of erecting stelae, Quirigua was one of only two cities to regularly erect monuments marking the end of five-year periods. Criterion (i) : The monuments of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua are an outstanding example and the largest corpus of Maya art masterpieces. They are an advanced representation of artistic skill by their sculptors and the meaning and beauty of each piece has survived the passing of this civilization, making them universal masterpieces. Criterion (ii): The monuments of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua were carved during the Classical Period dating from 250 AD to 900 AD. Between the times of 700 AD to 850 AD arose and flourished a style of art known as "The school of Motagua". This style is seen in the monuments of Quirigua and which in turn had a strong influence over the art production in the Maya area of Copán (Honduras) and Belize. Criterion (iv) : The Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua contain some outstanding 8th-century monuments and an impressive series of carved stelae and sculpted calendars that constitute an essential source for the study of Mayan civilization. The ruins of Quirigua retain an impressive series of stelae and sculpted calendars, partially deciphered, which constitute a remarkable and unique source of the history of the social, political and economic events of the Mayan civilization. The zoomorphic and anthropomorphic sculptures are among the most attractive pre-Columbian works known. Integrity All attributes that express the Outstanding Universal Value of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua are duly protected within the boundaries of the inscribed property, an area of 34 hectares, allowing for the highest level of conservation. Each of the monuments, true masterpieces of Maya art, is found in situ and in harmony with the surrounding natural and cultural environments. Protection measures have been taken over the years to prevent damage caused by human development and neglect. However the close proximity to the Motagua River and the geological fault by the same name, make the World Heritage property vulnerable to natural disasters, for which preventive measures have also been taken to have the greatest control over environmental factors.
There's no way around it. If you're traveling, especially to less developed countries you're going to have to haggle at some point. If you live in the west y...

Crossing the border was a little intimidating with money exchangers surrounding you and transportation guides trying to scoop you in there ride not to forget having to speak Spanish. My stepfather and I hopped on a bus across Petén to the little island of Flores to a hostel that overlooked the island and beyond. We spent one whole day hiking and walking around the Mayan city of Tikal where we saw monkeys, tall thick jungle trees, and amazingly built Mayan temples. Another day we spend the whole day on the island of Flores in a cozy hotel along the western end of Flores island overlooking Petén Itza with beautiful views of the sunset. On this island, we felt the history of both the ancient civilization that once stood there as well as the current historical spanish city that sits there today. We not only encountered friendly Guatemalans, and cobble stoned streets, but found a $3 meal that included 1 tortilla, 2 small burritos, and one Gallo (beer). AMAZING! We then took a 9 hour overnight luxury bus with a front seat overhead view of the road from Flores to Guatemala City higher up in the mountains to quickly take a cab to the old colonial capital of Antigua. This is the same bus one could use to Get from Guatemala city to Flores for Tikal. Aside from more cobble stoned streets, colorful friendly people, and pastel colored building, the view of two volcanoes was enough to grab my attention throughout the whole time in the little city. I fulfilled my desire standing atop a hill overlooking the city and volcano just like I had seen in pictures previously. Next morning we spent some time in the square taking pictures of churches, fountains, and beautiful architecture before our venture back home to the states. Despite the negativity one may here about Guatemala, give it a chance, go see it, and you will return with great memories that you will never forget. Guatemala is filled with a beautiful mixture of spanish and mayan culture, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, ruins, lakes, and so much more. I not only left Guatemala with a good backpacking and travel experience, but it helped me evolve and see what traveling truly means to me and how I will continue to persevere and live the travel life that I desire. Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Hope you enjoy and happy travels! Children of the fourth World - Documentary 60 Minute Documentary - First Aired Nationally on PBS in 1999. Emmy Winner. In the early 1990's while filming a Presidential Election in Guatelmala City, Film maker John Biffar met an American woman, Kari Engen. She had traveled to Guatemala City several years earlier on a mission to help poor, and hungry children. When she arrived in Guatemala city she learned of the plight of the children, many lost and abandoned. Living on the streets - After all, this was "The Third World." But then she learned of the children living in the dump. An entire subculture of people in a trash pile. This was "The Fourth World." Her life's mission has become helping these children to escape the deadly grasp and cycle of life in the dump. Her program, Mi Refugio is the result. John has documented her struggles, triumphs and tragedies for two decades. This documentary was produced in the late 1990's by Bush Entertainment and Trilogy Media, John's production company. Hosted by and Narrated by Film Actress Ali MacGraw. We are known as Dreamtime Entertainment today. I edited and filmed much of this program and it's a touching and an emotional rollercoaster as it was when I edited way back then on our Media 100 editing system. It still gives me the shivers. I hope you enjoy this program and it inspires you to change the world too. Like Kari is still doing. Go to www.mirefugio.org to help her. Mi Refugio is a nonprofit corporation with tax exempt status (#52-1610744) in the USA. Contributions should be made out to Mi Refugio and mailed to 4908 Jasmine Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20853. www.mirefugio.org Dave Says, "This program is not another video about a religious mission to convert people, it's not about a religious anything. It's about one person following her heart. Dedicating her life and all she believes to helping these children, and their families have a better life. For those of us in the US, this documentary gives us evidence that the SMALLEST thing, the most insignificant thing in our lives here in this country could be HUGE for a child living in a Central American dump. But amidst all that dirt and despair, a light can shine through it all...powered by belief that it can be changed. And the most humble person with no means at all, can make that change a reality. According to Kari, that happens when we look into our hearts and ask god. (or whatever deity it is that you believe in, or if you don't believe in any, then ask...just ask and see if you get an answer back) Writer and Director John Biffar, Executive Producer Paul Bush, Cameramen John Biffar, Dave Beaty, Flip Minott, Bob Hite, Music Kat Epple, Editing Dave Beaty

"If we shut down international adoptions, that's 5,000 kids a year whose lives we are ruining, whose lives could have been wonderful, and we're dooming them by shutting them into these institutions. So, to me, that's fundamental evil." --Harvard law professor Elizabeth Bartholet In 2007, Guatemala's privately run system of adoption attorneys, orphanages and foster care providers helped nearly 5,000 abandoned children find homes with loving families around the world. But then the Guatemalan government shut down international adoptions, created a centrally controlled adoption agency and nationalized the orphanage system. The plan was to promote in-country adoptions, but that plan hasn't worked. Last year, only 35 children were adopted by Guatemalan families. Why did the Guatemalan government put an end to a system that was giving thousands of abandoned children a chance at a better life? And what did UNICEF have to do with it? Reason.tv producers Paul Feine and Alex Manning went to Guatemala to find out. "Abandoned in Guatemala: The Failure of International Adoption Policies" is a film about the promise of international adoption and the sad reality that international adoptions around the world are decreasing, largely due to the influence of UNICEF. It's also a film about a privately run system that worked and a state-run system that is failing. Most of all, "Abandoned in Guatemala" is a film intended to raise awareness about international adoption in the hope that in the near future more abandoned children will be placed with loving families, wherever they happen to live. Approximately 20 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Additional camera: Anthony Fisher. Graphics: Sharif Matar. Voice-over translations: Rin Palmer.

It has been continuously active since 1999. Typical activity includes dozens of small-scale explosive eruptions each day. Images are acquired from the INSIVUMEH Fuego observatory in Panimache, 7 km southwest of the Fuego summit. The camera is an Axis 1602E. It sends images every 10 seconds when the network is available. In low light conditions, the infrared (IR) filter is not used so that wavelengths out to 1000 nm are captured and transmitted. Hot materials emit long wavelengths, so hot emissions dominate the scene. Fuego is commonly obscured by clouds in the afternoon and into the evening, but more likely to be clear late at night to mid day. During the rainy season (April-September), clouds are more likely.

Guatemala (i/ˌɡwɑːtəˈmɑːlə/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala [reˈpuβlika ðe ɣwateˈmala]), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Its area is 108,890 km2 (42,043 mi2) with an estimated population of 13,276,517.
A representative democracy, its capital is Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City. Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot. The former Mayan civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization, which continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. The Mayas live in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, the southern part of Mexico and northern parts of El Salvador.
Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821, joining the Mexican Empire. After it became an independent country in its own right, it was ruled by a series of dictators, assisted by the United Fruit Company. The late 20th century saw Guatemala embroiled in a 36-year-long civil war. Following the war, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections. In the most recent election, held in 2011, Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Party, won the presidency.
