resident Nicolas Maduro accuses the international media of distorting the situation in Venezuela, making it seem it is on the verge of civil war Anti-government protests continued in several parts of Venezuela on Friday. Protesters returned to the streets in the capital, Caracas, and the states of Carabobo, Zulia and Tachira, demonstrating against shortages of basic goods, high inflation and high crime levels. Protesters set makeshift barricades on fire and banged pans and pots to show their frustration at the unravelling situation. Public transportation has yet to be restored, many stoplights are out and students are gearing up for what they promise will be an extended fight. "We are (protesting) because we're demanding rights here in Venezuela. We cannot continue with this corrupt government, we are now allowed to do anything, there is no freedom of expression, students are mistreated," said medical student Jose Bandares, who was demonstrating in the streets of Valencia in Carabobo state.
Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro has announced plans to limit the number of US diplomats working the country. President Maduro said he wanted a review and reduction of American diplomatic staff during a rally on Saturday. Maduro said that American intervention has forced him to adopt the new measures. President Maduro said the US government has over 100 diplomats in Venezuela, while Venezuela only has 17 government workers in the U.S. Maduro also added that Venezuela would be charging U.S. citizens the same rate for visas as those levied on Venezuelans hoping to visit the U.S. Foreign minister Delcy Rodriguez added that current U.S. diplomats in the country would The Venezuelan president also said they would prohibit certain U.S. officials from entering the country. The list included George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Bob Menendez and Marco Rubio. Earlier this month, the U.S. imposed visa restrictions on unnamed Venezuelan officials it accused of human rights violations and corruption. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoWorld, where we animate the biggest headlines from around the world. President Nicolas Maduro's government faces tough times. He personally stands accused of lacking leadership in dealing with continuing protests. The recent police killing of a 14-year-old boy in the western city of San Cristobal during a demonstration has also angered many. Maduro accused opposition groups of attempting a coup last year, he now says, they still harbor the same ambition. But is that the reason behind the current unrest? Or is Maduro struggling to fix Venezuela's many problems? Presenter: Martine Dennis Guests: Francisco Dominguez - Director of the Latin American Studies Research Group at Middlesex University and Secretary of the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign. Mark Weisbrot - President of the lobbying group, Just Foreign Policy and Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. David Smilde - Senior Fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America and has spent the last 20 years living in Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Saturday that authorities in his country have captured "an American airplane pilot, who also has Latino roots." Maduro, who did not identify the pilot, said he had been arrested in the past few days in Táchira, a state in the western part of Venezuela that borders Colombia. The pilot was involved in recruitment activities, presumably of Venezuelans who would take part in a coup, Maduro said. During a speech at a rally in Caracas, the Venezuelan President linked the capture of the U.S. pilot to the implementation of a mandatory visa requirement for all Americans visiting Venezuela. The pilot had "all kinds of documentation," according to Maduro.

Inflation in Venezuela remains among the highest in the world; the Venezuelan central bank said inflation had reached 63.6% in the 12 months to November. While Venezuela has confirmed that it has entered into a recession, that confirmation hasn’t done much to stem the swelling lines at Venezuelan supermarkets. Business leaders have assured Venezuelans that the situation will improve in the coming days and have blamed the slowdown in deliveries on an extended Christmas holiday. Erin weighs in. Then, Erin sits down with David Beckworth – professor of economics at Western Kentucky University and adjunct scholar at The Cato Institute. David tells us what he thinks could get Japan going again and gives us his take on wage growth. And he deconstructs output level targeting in much greater detail. After the break, Erin is joined by James Galbraith – professor of economics at University of Texas and author of “The End of Normal.” James tells us how wage growth and income inequality play out in terms of the social issues surrounding the path of growth in the US and gives us his take on infrastructure. Oil prices around the world are falling as countries are finding alternative sources for fuel and energy. This is good news for the environment but bad news for anyone living in countries whose economies rely on fuel sales. Venezuela is one country whose international sales dropped by 60% and consequently the country has been forced to cut back on foreign imports. There’s a shortage of basic supplies, which is why people are now forced to line up for hours just to get into a pharmacy or a supermarket. Condoms are one item which are now extremely expensive, for example, a box of 36 Trojan condoms now costs USD $755 in Venezuela. And you most likely have to buy it from a black market website or dealer. Venezuela is already the country in South America with the highest number of pregnancies and has the 3rd highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases in South America. Unfortunately, it’s a problem with no cheap solution in sight. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoWorld, where we animate the biggest headlines from around the world. Plunging oil prices have sent shudders through global financial markets... but in particular... they are wreaking havoc on the troubled economies of Russia and Venezuela. Russia′s central bank sharply increased its benchmark interest rate... but the emergency measure has done little to stop the rouble from freefalling. Ji Myung-kil reports. The Russian rouble is hovering at its all-time low despite a radical interest rate hike overnight. Falling oil prices and Western sanctions dragged the rouble to a low of 67 against the dollar on Monday. To arrest the fall, Russia′s central bank hiked its key interest rate by a whopping 6-point-5 percentage points to 17 percent. The Russian currency jumped against the dollar on Tuesday before being pushed back to near the Monday low. Concerns are rising for Russia, as the rouble lost nearly half of its value against the U.S. dollar so far this year, although the country has spent more than 70 billion dollars to support its currency. There are no signs things will turn around for Russia, which rely heavily on oil for its revenues. Brent crude prices fell below 60 U.S. dollars per barrel on Tuesday for the first time in five years. Worsening the prospect is fears that Washington considers new sanctions against Russia for Moscow′s support for separatist militants in Ukraine. "I think the central bank is doing all it can at the moment, but its hands are tied and it is down to Putin to resolve the matter and this is something he just doesn′t seem very willing to do." Venezuela is seen to be worse off as oil makes up 96 percent of its export earnings. Many financial watchers warn that the Latin American country is pushed to the brink of default on its debt. Venezuela has the highest inflation rate in the region - at more than 60 percent. Venezuelan benchmark soverign bonds are now tradingh at just over a fifth of its face value. Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.

Venezuela's parliament has granted President Nicolas Maduro special decree powers which enable him to pass laws for 12 months without congressional approval. The successor to the late Hugo Chavez says he needs them to wage a so-called economic war in order to regulate the economy and stamp out corruption. Critics say it is a blatant power grab. Maduro says he has already planned his first laws: one will limit business profit margins to 15 percent and another will create a new state body to oversee dollar sales by Venezuela's currency control board.
This week, officials from the Iranian government arrived in Venezuela to visit a cement factory in Anzoategui, a region that is several hours away from the capital Caracas. This factory was built with Iran’s help. It’s now known as Cerro Azul factory and has become the biggest of its kind in Latin America. The Iranian authorities were welcomed by their Venezuelan counterparts and together verified the successful development of this impressive construction. The Iranian deputy Minister of Industry spoke to Press TV about the importance of this technological accomplishment which benefits both nations. Cerro Azul has been built using state of the art technology and advanced engineering techniques and now it is able to produce one million tons of cement per year. In this context, Venezuelan officials thanked Iran for its valuable contribution. In this context, authorities highlighted Iran's commitment to industrial development for peaceful purposes. Now with a higher production of cement, Venezuelans hope to meet their dometic needs for housing and other projects. This brand new cement factory known as Cerro Azul is yet another significant example of the bilateral cooperation between Iran and Venezuela. The investment in industry and advanced technology set Venezuelans one step closer to their strategic goal of diversifying their economy by producing a wide variety of products and free their industry from its dependence on oil. It was an incredibly special and meaningful program here in Venezuela, with true people-to-people connections created through the Spirit of Aloha and through the sharing of Hawaiian music, dance and culture. These true Ambassadors of Hawaii touched the hearts of all they encountered. With tears in her eyes, one U.S. Embassy staff member from Venezuela remarked that in her many years of running cultural programs, she had never been part of a program that did more to connect with the heart of the people of Venezuela. We offer a huge gracias and mahalo to Keola, Moana and Jeff for their tremendous efforts to share Aloha with Venezuela as it navigates difficult times. We offer a huge gracias and mahalo to the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela, and to the Cultural Affairs Officer Neal Murata and the Cultural Affairs Specialists Elena Broszkowski and Andrea Rangel for their incredible work to create meaningful connections through music, food and culture for both countries. Perhaps what best symbolizes this program is the picture drawn by students of the Isla Margarita school for deaf students-- even more profound when you consider that for these deaf students, hands are the very symbol of communication and connection.

Venezuela has a plan to buy it a little time as oil prices continue to fall. The hope is to generate money from some of its other natural resources: beaches and tourist attractions. However, the government may still need to do more to attract tourists. CCTV America's Martin Markovits reported this story.
A hotel in venezuela caters to foreign men in a special way.
Travel video about destination Venezuela. Venezuela is a land of beauty and contrast, a country that contains several unique habitats and is one of the last great natural paradises on Earth. It is also home to the legendary Orinoco, the second largest river in South America that also forms a natural border with Columbia. From Puerto Ayacucho we journey to the remote regions of the State Of Amazonas, the country’s most southerly province. Extending for one hundred and eighty thousand square kilometres and with only a hundred thousand inhabitants it is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Venezuela. A short journey by motorboat takes us to the headwaters of the Rio Ventuari. Because the route leads through an extensive maze of canals it is important that this leg of the journey be taken with an experienced guide who is well versed with the local geography. Following a three hour journey on various tributaries of the Orinoco we arrive at the small village of the Makiritare Indians. The natural variety of the underground world of the Los Roques Archipelago manifests itself in the diversity of the numerous coral reefs that grow there. Apart from a particular fire coral each one of them belongs to a single species that is known as the ‘flower animal’. East of the Venezuelan Andes, in the vast plains of the Llanos, the scenery is entirely different. It is almost reminiscent of America’s Old Wild West. The Llaneros is South America’s version of the legendary cowboy and the use of the Llanos as pasture land was introduced in the eighteenth century and covers a third of Venezuela. It is believed that a number of Andalucian families moved into the plains in 1548 as they were more interested in agriculture and cattle breeding than the Conquistadores who sought only gold. There is almost no other country in the world that contains so many diverse and fascinating landscapes as Venezuela, the land of the Indios and Llaneros and a land full of outstanding cultural contrast and natural splendour.

That man however was journalist Jim Wyss being welcomed home to the US shortly after his arrest. TeleSur declined to comment. The advert has been withdrawn. For more Info :http://www.bbc.com/news/

As the hostage crisis continues to unfold, many say it's the rebels' supporters that are truly responsible. "The only reason they're acting this way is because they feel they have some sort of support from the west," political analyst Ibrahim Alloush told RT. He said that if you look at the whole picture, you will easily find that the problem is not with those rebels, but with those who are supporting them -- "the ones who are arming them, financing them, and providing them with political support." Alloush spoke to RT about the recent kidnappings, and western countries' ongoing support to the Syrian rebels. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ★ MORE INTERESTING VIDEOS: http://goo.gl/Orxwzj ★ SUBSCRIBE: http://goo.gl/GynuUU ★ Thanks For Watching ★ ★ Post comment , share and tell us what u think ★ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Support these moviemakers: http://johnpilger.com/books Click the Subtitles Icon and choose required subtitles. _____________________________________________________ Documentary United Kingdom / Australia, 2007 Directed by: John Pilger, Christopher Martin Producers: Christopher Martin, Wayne Young Editor: Joe Frost The film was made with the support of the humanitarian financier Michael Watt. 'The War On Democracy' (2007) was John Pilger's first for cinema. It explores the current and past relationship of Washington with Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Using archive footage sourced by Michael Moore's archivist Carl Deal, the film shows how serial US intervention, overt and covert, has toppled a series of legitimate governments in the Latin American region since the 1950s. The democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende, for example, was ousted by a US backed coup in 1973 and replaced by the military dictatorship of General Pinochet. Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador have all been invaded by the United States. John Pilger interviews several ex-CIA agents who took part in secret campaigns against democratic countries in the region. He investigates the School of the Americas in the US state of Georgia, where Pinochet's torture squads were trained along with tyrants and death squad leaders in Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil and Argentina. The film unearths the real story behind the attempted overthrow of Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez in 2002 and how the people of the barrios of Caracas rose up to force his return to power. It also looks at the wider rise of populist governments across South America lead by indigenous leaders intent on loosening the shackles of Washington and a fairer redistribution of the continent's natural wealth. John Pilger says: "[The film] is about the struggle of people to free themselves from a modern form of slavery". These people, he says, "describe a world not as American presidents like to see it as useful or expendable, they describe the power of courage and humanity among people with next to nothing. They reclaim noble words like democracy, freedom, liberation, justice, and in doing so they are defending the most basic human rights of all of us in a war being waged against all of us." 'The War On Democracy' was a Youngheart Entertainment, Granada and Michael Watt production. It was released in UK cinemas on 15 June 2007 and broadcast on ITV1, 20 August 2007. Awards: Best Documentary Award, 2008 One World Awards, London. The panel's citation read: "There are six criteria the judges are asked to use to select the winner of this award: the film's impact on public opinion, its appeal to a wide audience, its inclusion of voices from the developing world, its high journalistic or production standards, its success in conveying the impact of the actions of the world's rich on the lives of the poor and the extent to which it draws attention to possible solutions. One film met every one of these. It was the winner of the award: John Pilger's 'The War on Democracy'." _____________________________________________________ Source: www.johnpilger.com
http://thefilmarchive.org/ 1988 The contras (some references use the capitalized form, "Contras") is a label given to the various rebel groups opposing Nicaragua's FSLN (Sandinista National Liberation Front) Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction government following the July 1979 overthrow of Anastasio Somoza Debayle's dictatorship. Among the separate contra groups, the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN) emerged as by far the largest. In 1987, virtually all contra organizations were united, at least nominally, into the Nicaraguan Resistance. From an early stage, the rebels received decisive financial and military support from the United States government, initially supplemented by the Argentine dictatorship of the time. After U.S. support was banned by Congress, the Reagan administration tried to covertly continue contra aid. The term "contra" comes from the Spanish contra, which means against but in this case is short for la contrarrevolucion, in English "the counter-revolution". Some rebels disliked being called contras, feeling that it defined their cause only in negative terms, or implied a desire to restore the old order. Rebel fighters usually referred to themselves as comandos ("commandos"); peasant sympathizers also called the rebels los primos ("the cousins"). From the mid-1980s, as the Reagan administration and the rebels sought to portray the movement as the "democratic resistance," members started describing themselves as la resistencia. During the war against the Sandinista government, the contras carried out many violations of human rights, and evidence suggests that these were systematically commited as an element of warfare strategy. Contra supporters in Miami and the White House often tried to downplay these violations, or countered that the Sandinista government carried out much more. In particular, the Reagan administration engaged in a campaign to alter public opinion on the contras which has been denoted as "white propaganda". During the time congress blocked funding for the contras, the Reagan government engaged in a campaign to alter public opinion and change the vote in congress on contra aid. For this purpose, the NSC established an interagency working group which in turn coordinated the the Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean (S/LPD), which conducted the campaign. The S/LPD produced and widely disseminated a variety of pro-contra publications, arranged speeches and press conferences. It also disseminated "white propaganda" -- pro-contra newspaper articles by paid consultants who did not disclose their connection to the Reagan administration. On top of that, Oliver North helped Carl Channell's tax-exempt organization, the "National Endowment for the Preservation of Liberty", to raise $10 million, by arranging numerous briefings for groups of potential contributors at the premises of the White House and by facilitating private visits and photo sessions with president Reagan for major contributors. Channell, in turn, used part of that money to run a series of television advertisements directed at home districts of congressmen considered to be swing votes on contra aid. Out of the $10 million raised, more than $1 million was spent on pro-contra publicity. "If you look at it as a whole," a senior S/LPD official said, "the Office of Public Diplomacy was carrying out a huge psychological operation of the kind the military conducts to influence a population in denied or enemy territory." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_War

President Bashar al Assad celebrates New Year’s Eve with Syrian soldiers on the battlefront. Jobar area, suburb of Damascus. President Bashar Hafez al-Assad: “On the new year, families meet together, but you wanted to be here to protect your people and country, leave your families behind. Receiving a new year is everybody’s hope, but the bigger hope is the victory of our armed forces and of all those who fought alongside with them, in our battle against terrorism. We do embrace you, as a society and people, but we derive our morale from you and your high morale”. With the beginning of the new year, President Bashar al-Assad visited army and popular defense forces at the fire lines of Jobar, Damascus countryside. President al-Assad toured a number of posts and military units which face armed terrorist groups, hailing and appreciating forces’ victories and sacrifices to keep the people of Damascus and its surrounding, as well as their properties, protected and safe. Greeting families, soldiers of the Syrian army and popular defense forces, the President wished quick recovery for injured ones, affirming that sacrifices of martyrs, injured soldiers and the determination of their families were the most important basis for Syria’s steadfastness. The president also hailed soldiers on the fire lines in Jobar and all those who carried arms for defending the homeland in all hot spots of Syria, where terrorists attacked their people. For their part, the soldiers affirmed that they will keep defending Syria preserving its soil and pride till defeating terrorism and restoring safety and security to the homeland. Hundreds of people have been taking part in a rally in Venezuela in support of jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. Supporters carried banners which read: "Wanting a better Venezuela is not a crime" and "Those who tire out, lose." It is a year since the 43-year-old was arrested after handing himself in to authorities in the capital, Caracas. Caracas is a city with a population over three million, crammed into a valley in northern Venezuela. Over 2000-2010, Venezuela's oil revenues did not compensate for mismanagement of the city. The city's infrastructure deteriorated and Caracas residents are increasingly entrenched in slum areas. As of 2011, there was still no clear plan regarding how crime, poverty and severe traffic problems could be eradicated from the city. The city of Caracas receives preferential treatment in Venezuela's economy, as Venezuela's oil-generated revenues are used to subsidise the city's development. Caracas' population growth is driven entirely by natural increase, as the city is too packed to accommodate further immigration. Housing in Caracas accounts for a relatively small share of the household budget but for damaging reasons. The majority of dwellings in the city are located in the slum areas, which are cheap. Colombia Destination Guide Bound by both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the equatorial South American country of Colombia has had a turbulent recent history with its natural beauty and archaeological sites overshadowed by the prevalence of violence stemming from cocaine trafficking and civil conflict. The diverse landscape offers a variety of climates and experiences ranging from Amazon jungles to sun-soaked beaches and modern cities to ancient ruins. While some areas of Colombia are still considered too dangerous for tourists to venture to, if you stick to the urban cities such as Bogota and Medellin and provincial capitals, while taking precautions and adhering to common sense, the country is relatively safe. If in doubt, be sure to check the current government warnings for any developments. Warnings aside, there's much to enjoy in the country that brought salsa, cumbia, Shakira and Gabriel Garcia Marquez to the world. The terrain itself traverses coastal beaches, the alpine Andes, central highlands and flat plains. The Spanish-speaking country became independent from Spain in the 1800s and this colonial legacy can be seen in the well-preserved architecture of Cartagena and Villa de Leyva. Visiting pre-Columbian ruins in Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) brings to mind swashbuckling scenes from an Indiana Jones movie -- machete optional! Colombia is also blessed with abundant natural attributes from the snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes of Parque Nacional de Cocuy to the sandy stretches of beach and deep bays of Parque Nacional Tayrona on the Caribbean coast. Adrenalin junkies not sated by the three-day hike to Ciudad Perdida can enjoy heart-pumping action in San Gil -- the adventure capital of Colombia - with rafting, abseiling and rock climbing among the activities on offer. To savour the true essence of Colombia, sample the local cuisine and abundance of tropical fruits. Empanadas are a popular dish of meat and potatoes wrapped in a pastry pouch. With coffee and sugar plantations a major part of the country's primary industries, Colombians are unsurprisingly renowned for having a sweet tooth. Locals like to indulge in desserts such as the milk-based arequipe, and drink their coffee black. Each South American country has its own regional music and dance style and for Colombia that's salsa and cumbia. For a taste of Columbia's renowned nightlife, head to Bogota or Cali, known as the salsa capital of South America. Don't be intimidated by the tricky step changes, locals are more than happy to teach you. For a Latin American destination with a difference, Colombia has all the moves.

Venezuela Travel - Venezuela - officially titled Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Spanish: República Bolivariana de Venezuela), is a tropical country on the northern coast of South America. It is a continental mainland with numerous islands located off its coastline in the Caribbean Sea. Venezuela possesses recognized borders with Guyana to the east of the Essequibo river, Brazil to the south, and Colombia to the west. Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, Barbados, Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Leeward Antilles lie just north, off the Venezuelan coast. Its size is 916,445 km² with an estimated population of 26,414,816. Its capital is Caracas. The colors of the Venezuelan flag are yellow, blue and red, in that order: the yellow stands for land wealth, the blue for courage, and the red for independence from Spain. A former Spanish colony, which has been an independent republic since 1821, Venezuela holds territorial disputes with Guyana, largely concerning the Essequibo area, and with Colombia concerning the Gulf of Venezuela. In 1895, after the dispute over the Essequibo river border flared up, it was submitted to a neutral commission (composed of United Kingdom, USA and Russian representatives and without a direct Venezuelan representative), which in 1899 decided mostly against Venezuelas claim.[4] Venezuela is known widely for its petroleum industry, the environmental diversity of its territory, and its natural features. Venezuela is considered to be among the worlds 18 most biodiverse countries,[5] featuring diverse wildlife in a variety of protected habitats. Venezuela is among the most urbanized countries in Latin America;[6][7] the vast majority of Venezuelans live in the cities of the north, especially in the capital Caracas which is also the largest city. Other major cities include Maracaibo, Valencia, Maracay, Barquisimeto and Ciudad Guayana. ( wikipedia ) Enjoy Your Venezuela Travel!

Maracaibo is a city and municipality in northwestern Venezuela, on the western shore of the strait that connects Lake Maracaibo to the Gulf of Venezuela. It is the second-largest city in the country (after the national capital Caracas) and the capital of the state of Zulia. The population of the city is approximately 1,495,200 with the metropolitan area estimated at 2,108,404 as of 2010. Maracaibo is nicknamed La Tierra del Sol Amada ("The Beloved Land of the Sun"). The name Maracaibo is said to come from the brave Cacique (Indian Chief) Mara, a young native who valiantly resisted the Spaniards and died fighting them. It is said that when Mara fell, the Indians shouted "Mara cayo!" (Mara fell!), thus originating the city name. Other historians say that the first name of this land in Indian language was "Maara-iwo" meaning "Place where serpents abound". In 1810 the province of Maracaibo did not join the first republic of Venezuela and remained loyal to the Spanish crown. Maracaibo then held the seat of the Captaincy General of Venezuela. In 1821 uprisings in favour of independence began conducting to warfare and hostility. The royalists, led by Francisco Tomás Morales, fought with the patriots, led by Rafael Urdaneta, to take back control over the province in the Juana de Ávila Battle and Morales brought back Spanish rule in 1822 until he was defeated at the Battle of Lake Maracaibo on 24 July 1823 culminating Venezuela's struggle for independence. The dictatorial regime of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez in the 1950s set as a goal the construction of a bridge connecting the two lake shores. Various bridge projects for the spanning of the Lake Maracaibo narrows near the city were in the works. The general's government had decided that this "city of independent thought" should be more "connected" to the rest of the country. Proposals for a bridge design that included rail transport and tourist facilities were seriously considered. The fall of the Pérez Jiménez government on January 23, 1958, quickly led to a less elaborate design project that was approved and funded by a democratic and more conservative government. The building of "El Puente Sobre El Lago de Maracaibo "General Rafael Urdaneta" (General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge over Lake Maracaibo) named after the distinguished General hero of the War of Independence was opened to public traffic in 1962. The project was completed on schedule in 40 months. This bridge construction project was a remarkable feat. Built under very difficult conditions, when completed, it became the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the world. The structure is in constant use and remains today as the most important link between Maracaibo, along with much of the state of Zulia, and the rest of Venezuela. Maracaibo has become a large metropolitan city, comprising two municipalities: to the north the municipality of Maracaibo and to the south the San Francisco municipality (established in 1995). In recent years, due to political/economic and cultural reasons, many have moved to Maracaibo from rural areas and other cities (including Caracas). In the political arena, the citizens of Maracaibo (and most other cities and municipalities in Zulia state) have in recent years voted for a competitive political system in where the governor is from a certain political party and the mayor or mayors are from the opposite political party. This system has brought many good things to the city and the state; for example, if the governor builds a bridge, one of the mayors will build two, if a mayor cleans a public park, the governor retaliates by cleaning and remodelling another one. Maracaibo also boasts one of the best universities in the country, the state university. La Universidad del Zulia (LUZ) is well renowned for its excellent law, medical and engineering schools as many other disciplines. Other universities and schools include Universidad Dr. Rafael Belloso Chacín (URBE) and Universidad Rafael Urdaneta, with one of the country's leading psychology schools. Maracaibo was elevated to the status of Roman Catholic Archdiocese on 30 April 1966 with the creation of the Archdiocese of Maracaibo. Since November 2000, its Archbishop has been Ubaldo Ramón Santana Sequera. Maracaibo is one of the hottest cities of Venezuela. The rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta gives the city a semiarid climate(BSh) only attenuated by the moderating influence of the lake; its average historical temperature is 29 °C (84 °F). In the past the climate of the city, as well in all the coast of the Lake Maracaibo, was unhealthy, due to the combination of high temperatures with high humidity. At the present time, the effects of urban development, and control of plagues, has almost eradicated that. The registered high temperature of the city is 41 °C (106 °F), and the lowest is 18 °C (64 °F).

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Earlier this year, VICE News headed to Venezuela's capital of Caracas to cover protests that started in the provinces before engulfing the city. What began as a student movement inspired by the scarcity of basic goods and an exploding crime rate — the UN has classified Venezuela as the world's murder capital, war zones excluded — had snowballed into mass anti-government riots. Angry at the perceived shortcomings of President Nicolás Maduro, who replaced the charismatic Hugo Chavez a year before, thousands of mostly middle-class protesters took to the streets, tearing the city apart during pitched battles with Caracas's brutal semi-militarized police force. Protesters also had to contend with collectivos, quasi-governmental biker gangs accused of spreading insecurity and discontent to keep Venezuela's population frightened and indoors. VICE News released six dispatches from the ground and live streamed from Altamira Square, the heart of the city's unrest. In Venezuela Rising, we explain the story behind the protests, linking up with rioters, government supporters, activists, and victims of Caracas's intolerable crime wave. In an exclusive interview, we also speak to Henrique Capriles, the leader of the political opposition. At least 43 people have died since the protests in Caracas began, and thousands more have been injured and arrested. In Venezuela Rising, VICE News finds out why.

"I don't give the system, as we know it, more than six months," said Francisco Rodíguez, highlighting Venezuela's dollar exchange rate and relative prices as some major issues for the country's economy. While Venezuela's economic situation affects investors' confidence in the country, the political scenario has implications for foreign interests as well, said panelists. According to Alejandro Velasco, President Nicolás Maduro's 20 percent approval rating does not transfer to support for the opposition, and Venezeula is still not on the verge of political change unless protests by the popular sector take place.

VENEZUELAN PAVILION World’s Fair Expo’98, Lisbon, Portugal 1998 Expo Committee Honorable Mention Commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Venezuela Authors: Ricardo González M. Matías Pintó & Roberto Weil M. Stainless steel and metal structures, glass, mirrors, Cibachrome prints, audio and video systems The Pavilion consists of 10,000 sq. ft. of simulated natural environments. The contents of the Pavilion relate to the theme of the Expo, "The Oceans: Patrimony of the Future,” and are organized according to naturally occurring water cycles. The Pavilion is structured in three sections that capture the distinct ambiance of each of three ecosystems: Venezuela’s rainforest, its rivers and the sea. In the first section of the Pavilion, the rainforest is interpreted as a maze where double-sided glass walls hang from the ceiling and reveal satellite images of the Venezuelan landscape. The passageways between the walls offer different soundscapes such as continuous rainfall, the voices of different Venezuelan ethnic groups and urban beats. The second section of the Pavilion presents an abstraction of the beauty and power of Venezuela’s rivers. It is a tunnel-like space that features a video wall with speakers at intervals along its length. In continuous flux, the audiovisual contents express the rivers’ perpetual flow and energy. The third section, representing the sea, combines a three-dimensional soundscape of binaural recordings with a spectacular visual environment. Video images on a screen 105 ft long by 20 ft high are duplicated ad infinitum by mirrors placed at the screen’s end and bottom. The combination of the video editing and audio engineering creates a magical effect; for the viewer immersed in the reverberating sounds of aquatic landscapes, panoramic and kaleidoscopic images of Venezuela’s magnificent submarine worlds and stunning beaches and aerial views of the country’s micro and macrocosms, the experience approaches the mystical.

Members of the Alba regional group expressed their support for Venezuela on Tuesday in the face of increasing tensions between the US and Venezuela. At an emergency summit, Latin American left-wing leaders urged the US to repeal an executive order which declared Venezuela a threat to the national security of the US. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stressed his country was no threat. The two countries have been trading barbs for months. 'No threat' Tension shot up after the US published an executive order on 9 March announcing sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials suspected by the US of committing human rights abuses. In the order, US President Barack Obama stated that the situation in Venezuela, including "the government's erosion of human rights guarantees (...) constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States". The wording of the order caused outrage not only with Venezuelan government officials, but also among its regional allies. "Venezuela has no plans, did not have, nor will it ever have plans to attack the United States or hurt anyone," Mr Maduro said at the Alba summit in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. He received strong backing from the Cuban leader, Raul Castro. Mr Castro, who announced a rapprochement between his government and that of the US in December after decades of animosity, said that "the US needs to understand once and for all that it cannot seduce or buy Cuba, just as it cannot intimidate Venezuela". "Our unity is indestructible," he added. Election plea Bolivian President Evo Morales said that "the US government must understand we are not living in imperial times of the past". Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said that it was the US and not Venezuela which was "a threat to global security, this is not rhetoric, it is reality". Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino questioned what the US, a country which he said "has made torture legal and (...) developed the most powerful mass surveillance system", could teach Latin American nations about human rights. At a Senate hearing in Washington, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for South America and Cuba, Alex Lee, meanwhile urged Latin American nations "to emphasize to the [Venezuelan] government the absolute importance of holding free and fair elections". Parliamentary elections are due to be held in Venezuela later this year. The exact date has yet to be announced. Mr Maduro won the presidential polls in 2013 by a razor-thin margin. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles cried foul, but following an audit of the electronic voting system, the election authority confirmed Mr Maduro's poll victory of 50.7% of votes to Mr Capriles's 49.1% In local elections eight months later, the government coalition won 54% of the vote, a comfortable 10-point lead over the opposition. Mr Maduro's approval rating has, however, dropped considerably since then and many Venezuelans have expressed their discontent with widespread shortages of basic goods and high levels of insecurity.

Huffington Post 2015-03-21Venezuela (i/ˌvɛnɨˈzweɪlə/ VEN-ə-ZWAY-lə), officially called the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Spanish: República Bolivariana de Venezuela [repuˈβlika βoliβaˈɾjana ðe βeneˈswela]), is a tropical country on the northern coast of South America. It borders Colombia to the west, Guyana to the east, and Brazil to the south. Its northern coastline of roughly 2,800 kilometres (1,700 mi) includes numerous islands in the Caribbean Sea, and in the north east borders the northern Atlantic Ocean. Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba and the Leeward Antilles lie near the Venezuelan coast. Venezuela's territory covers around 916,445 square kilometres (353,841 sq mi) with an estimated population of 29,105,632. Venezuela is considered a state with extremely high biodiversity, with habitats ranging from the Andes mountains in the west to the Amazon Basin rainforest in the south, via extensive llanos plains and Caribbean coast in the center and the Orinoco River Delta in the east.
I met her in Venezuela
With a basket on her head
And if she loved others she didn't say
But I knew she do, to pass away the time in Venezuela
Pass away the time in Venezuela
I gave her a sash of blue
A beautiful sash of blue
Because I knew that she could do with all the tricks, I
knew she knew
To pass away the time in Venezuela
And when the wind was out to sea, the wind was out to sea
And she was taking leave of me
I said sheer up there'll always be
Sailors on shore on leave in Venezuela
Her linger was changed but the thought of her beautiful
smile
The thought of her beautiful smile
Will haunt me and taunt me for many a mile
She was my gal and she did the wale
My best friend's in Venezuela
And he sent me a letter and a photograph
Well I miss him so you know
His letters always make me laugh
Well he's down there in the southern sun
Where the ocean waves roll blue
Walking barefoot in the sand
You know that's something we always liked to do
And I believe
I'll go to Venezuela too
well he tells me that he's happy there
And he doesn't really know how long he's gonna stay
There's a gentle breeze every morning
That can blow your troubles away
I know he's searching for his peace of mind
And a place where the pace is slow
I only wish I was there to share
Making it a two man show
And I believe
I'm really bound to go
Oh Venezuela
I can see him in the evening
Dancing 'neath the moonlit sky
Oh Venezuela
You take good care of that friend of mine
He's rambling blind
You treat him kind
He's looking for his wings to fly
My best friend's in Venezuela
And he sent me a letter and a photograph
Well I miss him so you know
His letters always make me laugh
We've gone our separate ways to see the world
but I can still hear him say
You go north and Randy I'll go south
And I'll meet you for a song in L.A.
And I believe
Oh I believe
I'm gonna meet the boy halfway
My best friend's in Venezuela
And he sent me a letter and a photograph
Well I miss him so you know
His letters always make me laugh
We've gone our separate ways to see the world
but I can still hear him say
You go north and Randy I'll go south
And I'll meet you for a song in L.A.
And I believe
Oh I believe
that was such a lovely dream
the streets were golden in the sun
i’ve never been to venezuela
but my family was all there
and my mother looked so young
venezuela looked like brooklyn
though the streets were twice as wide
children spun around the trees
little tops, little sufis
mamas smile from inside
oh fernando i’m so sorry
for the love you saved for me
but my heart is locked forever
in another lovely dream
he approached me like a prince
and said he’s loved me all his life
he said he knew that i’d come here
that he’s been waiting all these years
that i’m meant to be his wife
and my sister was so jealous
of the love you had for me
she left, stomping ‘cross the square
rigid arms flying hair
her skirt had many layers and it bounced like sandra
dee’s
oh fernando i’m so sorry
whatever could i say
to a man i’ve never met
who’s the one who got away
i cried to see his heart so plainly
(for he was such a formal man)
handed to me like a daisy
in the presence of my family
from his damp and shaking hands
i said – fernando, i can’t stay here
and a clock began to chime
and i opened up my shirt
and in its bony cage
ticked a paper valentine
oh fernando i’m so sorry
for the love you saved for me
but my heart is locked forever
in another lovely dream
oh fernando i’m so sorry
whatever could i say
to a man i’ve never met
I met her in Venezuela
With a basket on her head
If she loved others she didn't say
But I knew she'd do, to pass away
Pass away the time in Venezuela
Pass away the time in Venezuela
I gave her a silken sash of blue
A beautiful sash of blue
Because I knew that she could do
with all the tricks, I knew she knew
To pass away the time in Venezuela
To pass away the time in Venezuela
And when the wind was out to sea
the wind was out to sea
She was taking leave of me
I said: Cheer up there'll always be
Sailors ashore on leave in Venezuela
Sailors ashore on leave in Venezuela
Her lingo was strange but the thought of her beautiful

The thought of her beautiful smile
