  • Yachting NZ
NZ Yachting - Sail into Summer
The sailors of New Zealand have spoken and we’ve listened. You asked for a Kiwi-centric sailing magazine and Boating has delivered it in the form of New Zealand Yachting, a glossy, 144-page tribute to everything great about harnessing the wind to explore the majestic coastlines of God’s Own and beyond. Inside this image-rich publication you’ll find inspiration and entertainment for the Christmas cruise and the year ahead with destination guides for the Bay of Islands, Hauraki Gulf and Marlborough Sounds, as well as your selection of New Zealand’s 10 most influential cruising sailors of all time. Kerikeri kiwifruit grower Kerry Farrand talks about the magical five-year circumnavigation that saw him named Yachting New Zealand’s cruiser of 2012 while award winning Whangarei circumnavigators Alvah and Diana Simon share their top 10 places to cruise before you die. And don’t miss our feature interview with 19-year-old EMI-contracted singer-songwriter Jamie McDell who dreams of buying back her father’s Farr 1220 to continue her own inspirational voyage through life. For the racing sailors, there’s a special eight-page report on the ‘State of the Racing Nation’, we catch up Chris Dickson and Suzanne McFadden explores the courtship between Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa in our preview to the 34th America’s Cup. There’s columns from Peter Montgomery, Alvah Simon and Lindsay Wright and much more besides, including a 14-page look at the yachts of 2013 including analysis of the bold design trends emerging from the major production yards of the world.

  • Best of NZ Fishing News - Soft Plastics
Best of NZ Fishing News - Soft Plastics
Since early 2005, the 'new' technique of fishing with soft-plastic lures has swept the country.  Highly successful (often out-fishing conventional bait), this technique has been widely adopted by anglers in many parts of the country.  But part of the attraction is that it has put the fun back into fishing, due in part to the light, compact tackle and fine braid lines used to get the best out of these lures. Edited by Sam Mossman and Mark Kitteridge – two renowned exponents of the sport who have stayed at the cutting edge throughout - this special issue contains a collection of some of the standout soft-plastic articles published by NZ Fishing News, as well as a couple of pieces from back in the 1980s, to give some historical perspective to the method. So take advantage of this accumulated knowledge and experience greater success and enjoyment in future.

  • How to catch Tablefish
    How to catch Tablefish
When all is said and done, the ultimate justification for going fishing is to put a feed on the table, although this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the process, of course! Feeding your family (and yourself) is hard-wired into our DNA, and probably dates back to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Let’s face it, not starving to death was pretty good motivation for going fishing! In this day and age it is unlikely to come to this, although with the current price of fish, catching your own is the only way that many can now get to sample a meal of high-quality kaimoana on a regular basis. For whatever reason, there is something immensely satisfying about gathering then eating the results of your efforts. There are many species of fish, and a great many ways to fish for them. Getting away from snapper and kingfish (which have been the subjects of their own ‘Best of’ compilations), there are a lot of other fish species that rate highly on the plate. This volume pulls together a representative sample of ‘how-to’ type articles on these other tablefish which have featured in New Zealand Fishing News over recent years, chosen and edited by well-known author and Fishing News Special Projects Editor, Sam Mossman.
