South Sudan became the world's newest state when it seceded from Sudan in 2011 but by December 2013 President Salva Kiir had sacked his entire cabinet and accused his former vice-president Riek Machar of instigating a coup, which sparked off violent clashes in the capital Juba. The initial conflict may have been based on a power struggle between two of the top members of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement but the divisions between two of the largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer, soon became the driving force of tit-for-tat attacks across the country. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has warned that they need greater military force to protect civilians in the country and aid agencies are predicting food, water and medical supply shortages. With a humanitarian disaster seemingly on the way, we look at the background to what's going on in South Sudan. Six children lay sprawled across mattresses in the crowded corner of a basic concrete hospital ward. Their tiny bodies limp; hands hooked to IV drips and eyelids swollen shut, their little chests gasping hard for air. Each child, aged between 2 and 11, has red-raw, seeping flesh wounds where fire has scorched the skin away. Three of the children, large blistered welts across their faces, lips and ears, have burns covering at least 50 percent of their bodies. On meeting three foreigners with cameras heading towards the Mother of Mercy hospital as he was driving away, a father who had just lost his child in the same attack turned his vehicle around and escorted the journalists back to the scene. Journalists are banned by the Sudanese government from entering this region and the father wanted to show these rare visitors what had just happened to his family. The area around their village of Um Serdiba has been bombed relentlessly for the last two weeks. Nine children were sleeping in a foxhole inside their house when an artillery shell blasted through the roof at 4am on Tuesday morning. One child, a girl of 16, died immediately. Then a fireball collapsed on to the foxhole, killing two others aged 10 and 8, and engulfing the rest in flames. The children come from two families, their fathers are brothers. They live in the Nuba Mountains, a rugged border region of Sudan's South Kordofan state. Three years of war The government, ruling from the capital Khartoum, has been waging a brutal war in these hills for three years against a Nuba opposition group called Sudan People's Liberation Army-North (SPLA-N), who control much of this territory. As well as journalists, the Sudanese government forbids access for international relief organisations and restricts all humanitarian aid, leaving the entire region effectively under siege. "It is continuous," said Kununa Shanta, the father of the dead child, his face a picture of devastated shock. "Daily shelling and bombardment. Shelling in the early morning and night and Antonov [war plane] bombing during the day," said Shanta. The Sudanese government has in the past denied that it targets civilians in Kordofan, saying that its military uses accurate methods to ensure that only rebels are hit. The few groups who are working to support and protect civilians in this forgotten war zone do so incognito and at great risk. "I'm not sure that they're all going to live," said the head surgeon at Mother of Mercy hospital about the surviving children, under the condition of anonymity . "One boy has burns on 70 percent of his body. You can't survive if it's 60 or 70 percent." Hospital staff sedated the children, who are deeply traumatised, and cleaned their wounds. "Burns are the worst cases. They'll need skin grafts and it's a lot of work to dress burn wounds. They will all be here for months," said the surgeon. 'Campaign of terror' The Mother of Mercy hospital, built in the fold of a red-rock valley, is the only fully functioning facility of its size in the Nuba Mountains. Al Jazeera cannot reveal its exact location because hospitals, markets and schools are frequently targeted by aerial bombing raids from Sudanese government forces (SAF). There were three small medical facilities in the Nuba Mountains, including this hospital, which cater to a population of around one million scattered across these hills. However, on January 20, one of these facilities, a field hospital run by medical charity Doctors without Borders (MSF) in a village called Frandala, was targeted from the air and bombed, causing the organisation to cease operations and withdraw from the region. Ground fighting and aerial attacks have escalated in the Nuba Mountains since peace talks failed in December. Now, civilians are enduring some of the most intense bombardment since the start of the war in 2011. At least 10,000 people have been displaced by violence in the last few weeks alone, according to local media group Nuba Reports. The UNHCR is registering thousands streaming on foot over the border into South Sudanese refugee camps. War wounds are a normality for staff at the hospital in South Kordofan, they have been treating them for three years, but the number of civilian casualties has gone up significantly since December. "We are seeing an increase in non-combatants injured... We've treated 1,706 war-wounded since 2011," said the surgeon. "All the Antonov and artillery wounded in the past two weeks have been young, they are women and children. None of them are combatants." The government in Khartoum continues to deny allegations of atrocities committed against their own people in the Nuba Mountains while advocacy groups such as the Enough Project have published reports accusing Khartoum of "crimes against humanity by extermination", driving and starving the Nuba off their land.

War preparations to attack Iran are in "an advanced state of readiness". Hi tech weapons systems including nuclear warheads are fully deployed. This military adventure has been on the Pentagon's drawing board since the mid-1990s. First Iraq, then Iran according to a declassified 1995 US Central Command document. Escalation is part of the military agenda. While Iran, is the next target together with Syria and Lebanon, this strategic military deployment also threatens North Korea, China and Russia. Since 2005, the US and its allies, including America's NATO partners and Israel, have been involved in the extensive deployment and stockpiling of advanced weapons systems. The air defense systems of the US, NATO member countries and Israel are fully integrated. This is a coordinated endeavor of the Pentagon, NATO, Israel's Defense Force (IDF), with the active military involvement of several non-NATO partner countries including the frontline Arab states (members of NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative), Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, among others. (NATO consists of 28 NATO member states Another 21 countries are members of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), The Mediterranean Dialogue and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative include ten Arab countries plus Israel.) The roles of Egypt, the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia (within the extended military alliance) is of particular relevance. Egypt controls the transit of war ships and oil tankers through the Suez Canal. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States occupy the South Western coastlines of the Persian Gulf, the Straits of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. In early June, "Egypt reportedly allowed one Israeli and eleven U.S. ships to pass through the Suez Canal in ....an apparent signal to Iran. ... On June 12, regional press outlets reported that the Saudis had granted Israel the right to fly over its airspace..." (Muriel Mirak Weissbach, Israel's Insane War on Iran Must Be Prevented., Global Research, July 31, 2010) In post 9/11 military doctrine, this massive deployment of military hardware has been defined as part of the so-called "Global War on Terrorism", targeting "non-State" terrorist organizations including al Qaeda and so-called "State sponsors of terrorism",. including Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan. The setting up of new US military bases, the stockpiling of advanced weapons systems including tactical nuclear weapons, etc. were implemented as part of the pre-emptive defensive military doctrine under the umbrella of the "Global War on Terrorism". War and the Economic Crisis The broader implications of a US-NATO Israel attack on Iran are far-reaching. The war and the economic crisis are intimately related. The war economy is financed by Wall Street, which stands as the creditor of the US administration. The US weapons producers are the recipients of the US Department of Defense multibillion dollar procurement contracts for advanced weapons systems. In turn, "the battle for oil" in the Middle East and Central Asia directly serves the interests of the Anglo-American oil giants. The US and its allies are "beating the drums of war" at the height of a Worldwide economic depression, not to mention the most serious environmental catastrophe in World history. In a bitter twist, one of the major players (BP) on the Middle East Central Asia geopolitical chessboard, formerly known as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, is the instigator of the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Media Disinformation Public opinion, swayed by media hype is tacitly supportive, indifferent or ignorant as to the likely impacts of what is upheld as an ad hoc "punitive" operation directed against Iran's nuclear facilities rather than an all out war. War preparations include the deployment of US and Israeli produced nuclear weapons. In this context, the devastating consequences of a nuclear war are either trivialised or simply not mentioned. The "real crisis" threatening humanity, according to the media and the governments, is not war but global warming. The media will fabricate a crisis where there is no crisis: "a global scare" -- the H1N1 global pandemic-- but nobody seems to fear a US sponsored nuclear war.

Looking through some tapes, I came across this Dateline NBC show on an inestigation on the Sudanese "chemical factory" bombings by former US President Bill Clinton. I watched it today and the clues to the BS of the war on terror are here. YOU must watch and pay attention and then ask yourself a lot of questions. Also take note that they wondered if the US would have to be concerned about terrorism. You know what happen a few years later! How the media is able to predict things with the accuracy of a prophet is beyond me. Also take note of the Pakistan connection. I am sure that with ALL of the terror issues, Pakistan ALWAYS comes up, but yet there is no war with them. That is curious. The US goes to war with countries who are not involved, but leave thoese who ARE involved alone. Mmmm.... After this Times Square BS (it IS BS), that is just a "reminder" to us that terroism is not gone and we should be prepared for the big one that will have to lead us into war with Iran. Do you really think that after all that the US did (9-11 and other terror events) to surround Iran for Israel that they are just going to leave? They WILL attack iran, it is just a matter or when and what excuse they need. They already tried the "social unrust" tactic, but Iran did not fall for it. They keep talking about the nuclear issue, but so far it is not enough to justify war to the rest of the world. Just be on the look out and remember - if it does not make sense, it does not make sense! Also remember that something has to happen in order for the US to go to war with Iran, so keep that in mind also. These are the same dirty tricks since the CIA was founded and it does not matter who the presidents were/are, they are all on the same team - except the one who was shot in Dallas!

The African Union is moving forward with a request for a military force to stop the spread of the Boko Haram insurgency in West Africa. As the AU summit in Addis Ababa comes to an end, leaders have postponed consideration of a potentially damning report on those responsible for the ongoing conflict in South Sudan. AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui said Saturday the first meetings on the formation of a 7,500-troop force to confront Boko Haram will take place in Cameroon in the coming days, followed by consultations at the United Nations to seek endorsement and funding for the mission. “We will have, indeed, the challenge of financing this forces and discussions are ongoing and for us indeed the best will be within the assessed contributions of U.N.," said Chergui. The AU Peace and Security Council has requested a multinational African force to conduct operations against the Islamist group, which is based in Nigeria, but is seen as an increasing threat to the country’s neighbors; in particular Cameroon and Chad. Regional military efforts to confront the group gained momentum last week as Chadian forces retook control of a northern Nigerian town seized by Boko Haram. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the decision to form a regional front against the Islamist group, and said combating the threat of terror everywhere requires cooperation among nations. “Like al-Qaida, Boko Haram, ISIS., all these terrorists, they have committed unspeakable brutality against humanity," said Ban. "Not a single country, not even regional countries, can handle this alone.” Another pressing security challenge, the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, has been put aside. The AU Peace and Security Council decided late Friday to postpone consideration of an AU inquiry report on South Sudan that allegedly names and shames those responsible for committing war crimes in the country. Human rights groups have called for the AU to make the report public. Taking the lead instead, the East African group of nations IGAD has organized power-sharing talks between South Sudan’s warring factions at a hotel in Addis Ababa.

In January 2013 WXXI’s Hélène Biandudi Hofer traveled to South Sudan to explore the issues of education, diversity, and racism in the war-torn country. She shares her findings in a full-length documentary that focuses on the unique ties between Rochester and this young African nation. Biandudi Hofer traveled to South Sudan with the local non-profit group, Building Minds in South Sudan (BMISS), to report on the partnership between Rochester and the village of Mayen-Abun. BMISS raised money to build a school in that village through the support of Rochester area schools, businesses, community groups, rotaries, philanthropists and more. Schools for South Sudan follows this group as they work to fulfill their mission to build a school in this village. The documentary also includes the work of other Rochester-based non-profits on the ground in South Sudan to bring basic and essential needs such as water and health care to the African nation. WXXI’s Schools for South Sudan was made possible, in part, through financial support from the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Where would you find safety if your home was torched and armed men took everything you owned? In South Sudan, 1.8 million people have been displaced since Dec. 2013, when the political rivalry between South Sudan's president and his former VP exploded into fighting, deepening ethnic tensions across the world's newest country. To escape the violence, thousands of South Sudanese took refuge on a series of small islands isolated in the Nile River, where the waterway sustains and protects them. This is their story. South Sudan rebels 'committed' to ceasefire | BREAKING NEWS - 12 MAY 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS South Sudanese rebel leader Riek Machar has told the BBC he is still committed to a peace deal, despite accusing the government of violating a ceasefire. He said he wanted further "dialogue" with the government, also alleging that President Salva Kiir was not in control of some of the forces fighting for him. The government earlier accused the rebels of flagrant violations of the truce, but said it would not break it. The peace deal to end the five-month conflict was signed on Friday. Thousands of people have been killed and at least 1.5 million have been displaced, according to UN estimates. Some five million citizens of the world's newest country are currently believed to be in need of emergency aid, facing mass hunger. 'Agenda for dialogue' Mr Machar was speaking to Stephen Sackur on the BBC's HARDtalk programme and the BBC Arabic Service in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where the deal was signed. "We will negotiate with him [President Kiir]... for the sake of the people of South Sudan, we will negotiate and reach a political settlement", Mr Machar said. "Finally, the government accepted the agenda for dialogue which they were refusing before signing the deal. We also accepted this agenda." But back in South Sudan, the fighting continued. Both sides hope to gain territory to strengthen their position at the bargaining table. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA. VICE News Exclusive: Part 1 of "The Fight Against Ebola" - http://bit.ly/Ebola-Part-1 West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola — a terrifying disease that causes its victims to bleed to death from the inside out. Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population. Travel video about destination Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations. Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos. Zeenews 2015-03-20South Sudan (i/ˌsaʊθ suːˈdæn/ or /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in the east-central African region of northeastern Africa. It is also part of the North Africa UN subregion. Its current capital is Juba, which is also its largest city; the capital city is planned to be moved to the more centrally located Ramciel in the future. South Sudan is bordered by Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the west, and Sudan to the north. South Sudan includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd formed by the White Nile, locally called the Bahr al Jabal.
The modern states of South Sudan and Sudan were part of Egypt under the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, later being governed as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until Sudanese independence was achieved in 1956. Following the First Sudanese Civil War, the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was formed in 1972 and lasted until 1983. A second Sudanese civil war soon developed and ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005. Later that year, southern autonomy was restored when an Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan was formed.
