During the early 14th century the Inca Kingdom and their neighboring Tribes and Kingdoms were at war with each other over power and resources...Later under Emperor Pachacuti he reorganized the kingdom of Cuzco into an empire. Pachacuti along with his Nobles and engineers converted his empire to a new governmental system called "Tahuantinsuyu" and brought free trade, new road systems, architecture and new agriculture practices fitted for mountainous terrain. In this system there was a federal government and four provincial government. Head of the federal system was Emperor "Inca". And head of the other provincial government was Inca nobles. Pachacuti is also known to be the creator of Machu Picchu.

The earliest known example comes from Hernando Pizarro, the brother of the Spanish military leader Francisco Pizarro, who recorded an encounter that he and his men had in 1533 as they traveled along the royal road from the highlands to the central coast. It was during this journey that they encountered several quipu keepers, later relating that these keepers "untied some of the knots which they had in the deposits section [of the khipu], and they [re-]tied them in another section [of the khipu]." The Spanish authorities quickly suppressed the use of quipus. The conquistadors realized that the quipucamayocs often remained loyal to their original rulers rather than to the king of Spain, and quipucamayocs could lie about the contents of a message. The conquistadors were also attempting to convert the indigenous people to Roman Catholicism. Anything representing the Inca religion was considered idolatry and an attempt to disregard Catholic conversion. Many conquistadors considered quipus to be idolatrous and therefore destroyed many of them. Contrary to popular belief, the Inca weren't easily conquered. It took over 100 years for the Spanish to conquer the Incas, the Spanish did have hundreds of years of military experience of weapon/military development that was a result of hundreds of years of imperialism, warfare and fighting off invaders like other Euro Empires and the Moors, The Inca on the other hand, did go on mini conquest, but did not focus their existence on warfare, Inca's did have a huge military of tens of thousands, but relied mostly on hand to hand combat. The Inca did have advanced metallurgy, but mostly used it to develop tools, jewelry and ornaments. Although the Inca did have weapons of bronze and hardened alloys, most of the Inca weaponry were made of wood and stone that were used for hand to hand combat and/or to capture people rather than kill and conquer. The Inca were in the middle of political problems when the Spanish arrived with the spread of disease put the Inca State at a extreme disadvantage, nether the less, the Inca did go toe to toe with the Spanish in many military battles. The Spanish used all kinds of backstabbing, killing women and children and destroying inter-trade, but the biggest weapon the Spanish had was disease which caused the Inca population of 20 million to drop to a few million. The social structure of the Inca Empire varied from area to area, but still had the same basic structure, On top was the Sapa Inca, or the emperor. Then came the nobles, these were often the priests and relatives of past emperors or the current ones. After, there were craftsmen and architects, they were very high on the social ladder because of the skill that they had was required by the Empire for such buildings. then came the working class, farmers and laborers that were kept in their social groupings (Some were slaves) The Inca Empire was a federalist system which consisted of a central government with the Inca at its head and four quarters, or suyu: Chinchay Suyu (NW), Anti Suyu (NE), Kunti Suyu (SW), and Qulla Suyu (SE). The four corners of these quarters met at the center, Cusco. These suyu were likely created around 1460 during the reign of Pachacuti before the empire assumed it largest territorial extent. It is probably the case that at the time the suyu were established they were roughly of equal size and only later changing their proportions as the empire expanded north and south along the Andes. The Inca state had no separate judiciary or codified set of laws. While customs, expectations, and traditional local power holders did much in the way of governing behavior, the state, too, had legal force, such as through tokoyrikoq (lit. "he who sees all"), or inspectors. The highest such inspector, typically a blood relation to the Sapa Inca, acted independently of the conventional hierarchy, providing a point of view for the Sapa Inca free of bureaucratic influence

The story of the Aztec empire is one wrapped in myth and legend. In less than 200 years they transformed themselves from a band of wandering nomads to the greatest civilization the New World had ever known. What records remain of this amazing feat indicate they did it through brilliant military campaigns and by ingeniously applying technology to master the harsh environment they faced. They built their capital city where no city should have been possible: in the middle of a lake. They quickly transformed marshes into rich agricultural land surrounding an urban center that rivaled any city in the world at the time. They called it Tenochtitlan. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived there in 1519, and saw its gleaming pyramids, temples and places, grand canals filled with boats, enormous causeways crossing miles of lake from the mainland with aqueducts bringing fresh running water to the massive city, they actually thought they were dreaming. But they also practiced human sacrifice on an unprecedented scale, at one time dispatching 20,000 victims at a single temple dedication ceremony. They also made many enemies. By the time the Spaniards landed they had no trouble recruiting tribal allies to destroy the Aztecs and that they did just that with amazing speed leveling Tenochtitlan completely to build their colonial capital, Mexico City, on the rubble. From the remains of the Great Temple in Mexico City, to the construction of their Venice of the New World, this episode will examine the architecture and infrastructure behind the New World's greatest, and last, indigenous society.
