MSNBC Guest to Fellow Guest Complaining About His Use Of Black Culture & Racism: "I'm Actually Black, But You Assumed Otherwise" During Starbucks #RaceTogether Panel, MSNBC Guest Awkwardly Informs Fellow Guest He’s Black (Huffington Post) Things got a little awkward on MSNBC's "All In with Chris Hayes" Tuesday night. During a segment on Starbucks' new and controversial "Race Together" campaign, which seeks to have employees start open conversations about race with customers, guests Jay Smooth and "CBS Sunday Morning" contributor Nancy Giles illustrated for viewers just how uncomfortable such interactions can be. Smooth -- who in addition to hosting a long-running hip-hop show on New York's WBAI radio station also video blogs about issues of race and culture for Fusion -- took the position that a campaign like "Race Together" fails to get at the true, systemic problems of white supremacy in America. The conversation was largely substantive, but after host Chris Hayes rolled footage of Smooth's YouTube video “How to Tell Someone They Sound Racist," things started to go off the rails. "I can't not tease Jay about the kinda, like, brotha way he was trying to talk," Giles said. "Like, 'Hey,' with the rap music in the background, and, like, down with the people." "I'm a rap guy!" Smooth responded, most likely seeing the train wreck coming from a mile away. But Giles continued to persist anyways. "Yeah, I know, but it's another interesting, funny thing about race," she said. "Like, there would be some people that feel that you co-opted something like that, and other people might feel like that's his background and that's really cool, too." Giles continued to joke with Smooth about the way he spoke in the video, until finally things came to an inevitable and cringeworthy halt. "It's also interesting because I'm actually black, but you assumed otherwise," Smooth said. "And this is the sort of awkwardness that we can look forward to at Starbucks across America." The exchange was good-natured throughout -- with Hayes laughing and clapping on the sidelines -- but painful to watch nonetheless. (Mediaite) Last night, a panel on All In with Chris Hayes became the ultimate example of how awkward the results of Starbucks’ #RaceTogether campaign could be. While the entire debate was filled with substantial criticism about the premise of the campaign — was this the proper way to address real racial issues in America? Would this actually address systemic issues and challenge people’s assumptions? — it suddenly stopped being a well-produced television segment roughly five minutes in, and became a real, authentic race discussion, complete with accidental stereotypes. Chris Hayes showed a video of panelist Jay Smooth‘s YouTube lecture, “How to Tell Someone They Sound Racist”, and fellow panelist Nancy Giles joked about the “brotha way he was trying to talk” in the video. “I’m a rap guy!” Smooth said. “Yeah, I know, but it’s another interesting, funny thing about race. Like, there would be some people that feel that you co-opted something like that, and other people might feel like that’s his background and that’s really cool, too,” Giles replied, poking fun at his impersonation of a black guy. “It’s also interesting because I’m actually black, but you assumed otherwise,” Smooth replied. “And this is the sort of awkwardness that we can look forward to at Starbucks across America.” To her credit, Giles immediately pointed out that her assumption was the kind of thing that race discussions led to, and Hayes broke into hysterical laughter in the background. While we’re aware that Starbucks wanted to catalyze a vigorous debate on race — and, if this debate is anything, they’re getting it — we’re pretty sure they didn’t want the debate to focus on whether their campaign was dumb or not. video footage caught on tape cellphone camera surveillance raw dash cam air live on tv share comment like most popular

"Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses the reaction of MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews to the speech made by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. To say Matthews is less than pleased would be an understatement. 'Quite cross' might be a very dry way to describe the reaction of MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews to the recent speech made by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States Congress. He saw the speech as an attempt to sabotage and undermine the nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and it's allies and Iran. Matthews has been quoted as saying, "This man, from a foreign government, walked into the United States legislative chamber and tried to take over U.S. foreign policy." This comes at a time of already strained relations between the Israeli Prime Minister and President Obama as we approach the Israeli elections on March 17,2015." Do you agree with Matthews' opinions? Scarborough: It's Not the Police's Job to 'Make Primetime People on MSNBC Feel Better' 12/3/2014 Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough battles guest Dorian Warren, yelling: “A cop is not out on the street going, ‘You know what I’m going to do today? I’m going to move our society forward, A cop on the street has one job: to protect the people in that neighborhood. It is not to make a statement that makes primetime people on MSNBC feel better about America.”
The MSNBC crew offers trigger warnings for the word Redskins, badly predicts election outcomes, poorly analyzes literature and overall has a really great year.
"Morning Joe" host Mika Brzezinski found herself arguing with both Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and her own co-host Joe Scarborough when she began grilling the senator on his support for the Senate GOP's letter to Iran. On Monday, the Iranians confronted the U.S. about the letter during nuclear talks. "I guess the question I have first is, was the intention of the letter to get in the way of a negotiations as it is proved to?" Brzezinski asked Cruz. "Look, the intention of the letter was two things. Number one, to defend our national security. I think this deal that is being negotiated by the Obama administration is profoundly dangerous," he said. Brzezinski interrupted: "So it was intended to get in the way of the deal?" "It was intended to stop a bad deal," he shot back. "Absolutely." The two went back and forth as Brzezinski repeatedly brought Cruz back to the results the letter was having on the nuclear talks. "To interfere with a negotiation with Iran and to actually possibly even undermine a deal in the making? Basically the next step to that is to just get right down the road to war," she said. At that point, co-host Joe Scarborough, who has sparred with Mika over the Middle East in recent weeks, couldn't resist but to jump in to Cruz's defense. "No, it's not. No, it's not. Hold on a second," Scarborough said. "No, it's not. Forgive me for interrupting but the choice is not between war and a bad deal." Brzezinski ignored her co-host and turned back to Cruz. "What am I, Willie, a potted plant?" Scarborough asked of co-host Willie Geist. "But this is all deflecting, the history lesson," Brzezinski said after a lecture from both Cruz and Scarborough about the Reagan era. "It's deflecting from whether or not the intention of the letter is what's happening." "And I'm concerned you're saying you're liking the effect it's having," she added.

(Mediaite) Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was not happy with President Barack Obama’s remarks at yesterday’s National Prayer Breakfast, in which Obama warned Christians and other faiths not to get on their “high horses” about Islamic violence given their own religions’ deeds. Scarborough mocked “this stupid left-wing moral equivalency” that he called “baffling.” “The president having to go back 700, 800, 900 years!” Scarborough said. “You see this when you have people that somehow want to paint a broad brush: ‘Yes, radical Islam is bad but look what Christianity does.’ Really, you have to go back 800 years to a crusade — which, by the way, most historians say Christians launched in response to years and years of Muslims taking over their former land?” “It’s not okay,” Scarborough concluded. “You almost have to ask the question: where did he go to church? Where would he get such ideas from?” video footage caught on tape cellphone camera surveillance raw dash cam air live on tv share comment like

Someone who obviously does not want to be a polarizing candidate, he wants to bring people together, I mean — really? That’s absurd.” While co-panelists Joan Walsh and Michael Steele could be heard laughing at Lemieux’s remark, guest-host Melber responded: “Well, I mean there’s plenty of country music that doesn’t have that message, right?” A few segments later, Melber appeared on-air with an apology: “We have a programming note.

MSNBC hosts and guests reacted with fury over Benjamin Netanyahu's victory on Tuesday night, describing it as "polarizing," a modern "southern strategy" and an appeal to "racism." Appearing on NewsNation, Wednesday, with Tamron Hall, London Professor Fawaz Gerges decried the Israeli Prime Minister's "use of fear, the use of xenophobia and racism against a significant segment of Israeli citizens, warning Jewish voters that Arabs were flooding the polls." This prompted no response or push back from Hall. Speaking of the frosty relationship between the President and Netanyahu, Gerges concluded, "The reality is, the question is what will the Obama administration do? Obama, another point is that Obama has been correct." On Andrea Mitchell Reports, Atlantic contributor Jeffrey Goldberg sneered that the Prime Minister "played the Israeli version of a southern strategy and basically tried to scare his base into coming out and giving their votes to him by saying, essentially 'the Arabs are coming!" - See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2015/03/18/fury-msnbc-fumes-over-netanyahus-use-fear-xenophobia?On Tuesday night, it was clear that Netanyahu was on his way to a resounding victory. Despite this, All In anchor Chris Hayes seemed to be in denial. He insisted, "Regardless of the outcome however, there's no question this election...did not go the way he planned." Didn't go "the way he planned?" The result was a resounding victory. In an opening commentary, Hayes assailed the Israeli politician's U.S.-style "demagoguery": CHRIS HAYES: Posting on Facebook about the left-wing conspiracy funding his opposition, vowing at a right-wing rally never to cede control of the occupied territories, and yesterday, finally admitting what many of his critics have long suspected -- if he continues as prime minister, Netanyahu would block the formation of a sovereign Palestinian state. In what appeared to be a panicked last-ditch ploy to turn out right wing voters today, he took another page in the American playbook, resorting to demagoguery. Netanyahu warned supporters, quote, "Right-rule is in danger. Arab voters are streaming in huge quantities to the polling stations. The left-wing organizations are bringing them in buses." Offering the ultimate liberal insult, Hayes concluded that Netanyahu "is Israel's George W. Bush." - See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2015/03/18/fury-msnbc-fumes-over-netanyahus-use-fear-xenophobia?utm_source=facebook&utm;_medium=marketing&utm;_term=facebook&utm;_content=facebook&utm;_campaign=netanyahu-msnbc#sthash.ioa5azEI.dpuf - See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2015/03/18/fury-msnbc-fumes-over-netanyahus-use-fear-xenophobia?utm_source=facebook&utm;_medium=marketing&utm;_term=facebook&utm;_content=facebook&utm;_campaign=netanyahu-msnbc#sthash.ioa5azEI.dpufutm_source=facebook&utm;_medium=marketing&utm;_term=facebook&utm;_content=facebook&utm;_campaign=netanyahu-msnbc#sthash.ioa5azEI.dpuf

Last night, a panel on All In with Chris Hayes became the ultimate example of how awkward the results of Starbucks’s #RaceTogether campaign could be. The Guardian 2015-04-04MSNBC (stylized as msnbc) is a cable news channel based in the United States available in the US, South Africa, the Middle East and Canada. Its name is derived from the most common abbreviations for Microsoft and the National Broadcasting Company.
msnbc.com, a separate company, is the central news website for the NBC News family, featuring interactivity and multimedia plus original stories and video which augment the content from NBC News and partners.
MSNBC and msnbc.com were founded in 1996 as a partnership of Microsoft and General Electric's NBC unit, which is now NBCUniversal. Although Microsoft and NBC shared operations of MSNBC cable at its founding, it was announced on December 23, 2005, that NBCUniversal would purchase a majority stake in the television channel, which left Microsoft with 18%, later reduced to zero. The two companies remain partners in msnbc.com. MSNBC shares the NBC logo of a rainbow peacock with its sister channels NBC, CNBC, NBC Sports Network, and ShopNBC. MSNBC is available in over 78 million households in the United States.
Christopher John "Chris" Matthews (born December 17, 1945) is an American news anchor and political commentator known for his nightly hour-long talk show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, which is televised on the American cable television channel MSNBC. On weekends he hosts the syndicated NBC News–produced panel discussion program The Chris Matthews Show. Matthews makes frequent appearances on many other NBC and MSNBC programs. On March 22, 2009, Matthews renewed the contract for Hardball with Chris Matthews through 2012.
Matthews was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Irish American parents and is a Roman Catholic. He attended La Salle College High School. He is a 1967 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and did graduate work in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Matthews served in the United States Peace Corps in Swaziland from 1968 to 1970 as a trade development adviser.
When Matthews first arrived in Washington, D.C., he worked as a police officer with the United States Capitol Police. Subsequently, he served on the staffs of four Democratic members of Congress, including Senators Frank Moss and Edmund Muskie. In 1974, he mounted an unsuccessful campaign for Pennsylvania's 4th congressional district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in which he received about 24% of the vote in the primary. Matthews was a presidential speechwriter during the Carter administration and later worked for six years as a top aide to longtime Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O'Neill, playing a direct role in many key political battles with the Reagan administration.
