Detention is the process when a state, government or citizen lawfully holds a person by removing their freedom of liberty at that time. This can be due to (pending) criminal charges being raised against the individual as part of a prosecution or to protect a person or property. Being detained does not always result in being taken to a particular area (generally called a detention centre), either for interrogation, or as punishment for a crime (see prison).
The term can also be used in reference to the holding of property, for the same reasons. The process of detainment may or may not have been preceded or followed with an arrest. The prisoners in Guantánamo Bay are for example referred to as "detainees".
Detainee is a term used by certain governments and their military to refer to individuals held in custody, such as those it does not classify and treat as either prisoners of war or suspects in criminal cases. It is used to refer to "any person captured or otherwise detained by an armed force." More generally, it is "someone held in custody."

Dante Terrell Smith (born December 11, 1973) is an American actor and MC, known by the stage names Mos Def (
/ˌmoʊsˈdɛf/) and Yasiin Bey. He started his hip hop career in a group called Urban Thermo Dynamics, after which he appeared on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. With Talib Kweli, he formed the duo Black Star, which released the album Black Star in 1998. He was a major force in late 1990s underground hip hop while with Rawkus Records. As a solo artist he has released the albums Black on Both Sides in 1999, The New Danger in 2004, True Magic in 2006, and The Ecstatic in 2009.
Although he was initially recognized for his musical output, since the early 2000s, Mos Def's screen work has established him as one of only a handful of rappers who has garnered critical acclaim for his acting work. He is well known for his portrayal of Brother Sam in the American drama series Dexter. Mos Def has also been active in several social and political causes.
He was born Dante Terrell Smith in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Sheron Smith and Abdul Rahman. He was raised by his mother in Brooklyn; his father lived in New Jersey. While his father was initially a member of the Nation of Islam and later an active member in the community of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, who merged into mainstream Islam from the Nation, Mos Def was not exposed to Islam until the age of 13. At 19, he took his shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith. He is friends with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest.

Omar Deghayes (born November 28, 1969) is a Libyan citizen with residency status in the United Kingdom, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2002. He currently lives in the United Kingdom. After his arrest, he was taken into US military custody and sent to Guantanamo Bay detention camp, in Cuba. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number was 727.
His lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith alleges that Deghayes was blinded by pepper spray inside the prison.
Deghayes' father was a union organiser who was executed in Libya while Omar was still a child.[citation needed] After this the family moved to the United Kingdom as refugees. They lived in Brighton According to the Birmingham Post Deghayes was a "laws graduate"; he studied law at the University of Wolverhampton and later studied in Huddersfield.
His family has mounted a campaign to free Deghayes. This campaign has received the support of the Brighton Argus newspaper and all six Members of Parliament in Sussex, where Omar Deghayes resided for many years and where his family still live.

Plot

Plot
Adriana is a 13-year-old girl from Mexico City whose kidnapping by sex traffickers sets in motion a desperate mission by her 17-year-old brother, Jorge, to save her. Trapped and terrified by an underground network of international thugs who earn millions exploiting their human cargo, Adriana's only friend and protector throughout her ordeal is Veronica, a young Polish woman tricked into the trade by the same criminal gang. As Jorge dodges immigration officers and incredible obstacles to track the girls' abductors, he meets Ray, a Texas cop whose own family loss to sex trafficking leads him to become an ally in the boy's quest. Fighting with courage and hard-tested faith, the characters of Trade negotiate their way through the unspeakable terrain of the sex trade "tunnels" between Mexico and the United States. From the barrios of Mexico City and the treacherous Rio Grande border, to a secret Internet sex slave auction and the final climactic confrontation at a stash house in suburban New Jersey, Ray and Jorge forge a close bond as they give desperate chase to Adriana's kidnappers before she is sold and disappears forever into this brutal global underworld, a place from which few victims ever return.

The 400-page book details Slahi's harrowing experience since being captured by the U.S. government in 2002 on suspicion of aiding Al Qaeda. His story includes extraordinary rendition, physical and mental abuse, and the nightmarish legal limbo he remains in—Slahi is still incarcerated even though a federal judge ordered his release in 2010. The book debuted at no. 14 on the New York Times bestseller list.
Shamsi sat down with Reason TV's Anthony L. Fisher to discuss the book, her client, and the moral and legal pitfalls of "enhanced interrogation techniques" and indefinite detention.

“I would rather follow order and reduce the pain that would be caused when the guards come to play; the guards used every contact opportunity to beat the hell out of the detainee.
“As soon as I stood up, the two _____ took off their blouses, and started to talk all kind of dirty stuff you can imagine, which I minded less.
While they were talking dirty to him, they apparently played around with his junk.
“What hurt me most was them forcing me to take part in a sexual t***esome in the most degrading manner. Both _______ stuck on me, literally one on the front and the other older _______ stuck on my back rubbing ____ whole body on mine.
He was also berated for praying during the entire experience from hell.

A senior South Korean official with knowledge of the matter said the move does not appear to be an outcome of talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

The U.S. official said Washington is willing to listen to North Korea′s list of demands and complaints to encourage them to make the right decisions.
Seiler said, however, that the problem is the North′s unwillingness to respond.

In an unexpected move, North Korea has released Jeffrey Fowle, one of three American detainees held in the country.
Mr. Fowle, who is already halfway home, is said to be in good health,... but his release raises questions about the fate of the two other Americans being held by the North,... and what can be done to bring them home.
Hwang Sung-hee reports.
Jeffrey Fowle, one of three Americans being held in North Korea, was released Tuesday.
Without providing details, the U.S. State Department confirmed that Fowle was flown home on a U.S. Air Force passenger jet and appeared to be in good health.
The 56-year-old American was arrested in April for leaving a bible in his hotel room.

Ex-Gitmo Detainee Held in Uganda Over Killing of Prosecutor

Hunting for suspects in the killing of a prosecutor who pursued Islamic extremists, Ugandan authorities arrested a Ugandan man who had previously been held by the United States at its prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before being released in 2006.
Jamal Kiyemba was arrested with three others in a Kampala suburb Tuesday, Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga said on Wednesday. Enanga said U.S. officials helped track down Kiyemba.
He said there was no conclusive evidence tying Kiyemba to the killing on March 30 of Ugandan prosecutor Joan Kagezi, but that detectives were questioning him about his possible role and about other offenses. Kagezi had been a prosecutor in the ongoing trial of 12 suspects accused of being involved in the July 2010 bombings here in which more than 70 people were killed while watching the soccer World Cup final on TV. The attack was carried out by al-Shabab, the Somali Islamic extremist group.
A U.S. military file signed by the then commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, Brig. Gen. Jay W. Hood, said Kiyemba was arrested by Pakistani police near Peshawar as he attempted to enter Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the company of a probable al-Qaida operative, a suspected al-Qaida operative and a "low-level jihadist.''
The 2004 document said Kiyemba had received training in the use of the AK-47 assault in Peshawar but concluded, in recommending that he be transferred to another country for continued detention, that his threat level was "medium'' and his intelligence value "low.'' Allegations in such documents are often obtained from unreliable third parties and are not 100 percent reliable.
Kiyemba is a convert to Islam who once lived in Britain before he traveled to Pakistan, Enanga said.

Kagezi was shot twice by gunmen after she left her car — in which she was traveling with two of her children on the way home from work — to buy groceries in a Kampala suburb. After shooting her in the head and neck, the gunmen fled on a motorcycle, according to police.

Celé trestní řízení bylo vedeno proti uprchlému, neboť muž již v roce 2006 opustil území České republiky v luxusním vozidle, které zpronevěřil. Od té doby po něm pátrali policisté napříč Evropou. Pátrání po muži bylo velmi obtížné, neboť používal několik identit, které podpořil falzy dokladů. Letité úsilí několika policejních sborů vyvrcholilo koncem ledna, kdy byl muž díky informacím, které poskytli pražští kriminalisté a experti z Odboru mezinárodní policejní spolupráce, zadržen na jihu Portugalska
Po necelých dvou měsících v portugalském vězení byl předán zpět do České republiky. O bezpečné a bezproblémové předání se postarali dva příslušníci Oddělení doprovodu letadel Ředitelství služby cizinecké policie. Ti muže letecky převezli z Portugalska do Prahy. Na pražském letišti si muže převzali pražští policisté, kteří ho eskortovali do věznice, kde si odpyká třináctiletý trest odnětí svobody.

Jamal Kiyemba, former Guantanamo bay detainee, arrested over Kagezi shooting

Jamal Kiyemba, is a Ugandan citizen formerly held in extra-judicial detention in the United States' Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba.
He was raised in a Roman Catholic family just outside of Uganda’s capital city of Kampala. In the 1980’s after his fathers death, he joined the rest of his family in London. He later converted to Islam in 1999. After the 9/11 attacks in the US, Kiyemba went to Pakistan, where he joined the Taliban, believing it would help him find solidarity with other Muslims. In 2001 Pakistani officials, captured Kiyemba and handed him over to US authorities. Within a year, Kiyemba was shackled and shipped off to Guantanamo Bay where he would remain for the next four years. In 2005, he was part of a hunger strike protesting the conditions at Guantanamo. He reportedly confessed to terrorist activities as a result of the torture and threats by the military guards. Kiyemba was finally released in 2006 following a Department of Defense Administrative Review Board hearing. The US had intended to return him to his country of residence, England, but he was denied entry there and he returned to Uganda in April 2006.

Jamal Kiyemba, is a Ugandan citizen formerly held in extra-judicial detention in the United States' Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba.
He was raised in a Roman Catholic family just outside of Uganda’s capital city of Kampala. In the 1980’s after his fathers death, he joined the rest of his family in London. He later converted to Islam in 1999. After the 9/11 attacks in the US, Kiyemba went to Pakistan, where he joined the Taliban, believing it would help him find solidarity with other Muslims. In 2001 Pakistani officials, captured Kiyemba and handed him over to US authorities. Within a year, Kiyemba was shackled and shipped off to Guantanamo Bay where he would remain for the next four years. In 2005, he was part of a hunger strike protesting the conditions at Guantanamo. He reportedly confessed to terrorist activities as a result of the torture and threats by the military guards. Kiyemba was finally released in 2006 following a Department of Defense Administrative Review Board hearing. The US had intended to return him to his country of residence, England, but he was denied entry there and he returned to Uganda in April 2006.

Guantanamo Detainee Becomes Best-Selling Author, Condemns Torture from Prison Cell
"I cannot believe that the majority of Americans want to finance the detention of innocent people," says Hina Shamsi, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union. She speaks on behalf of her client, Mohamedou Slahi, a current detainee at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay and the New York Times best-selling author of the recently released, Guantanamo Diary. Guantanamo Diary is the first account written and published by a still-imprisoned Guantanamo inmate. Slahi finished writing the book in 2005, but it took six years and a team of lawyers to obtain approval for publication. To secure the U.S. government's permission to publish the book, more than 2,500 redactions were added to the manuscript, which remain blacked out throughout the book's text. The 400-page book details Slahi's harrowing experience since being captured by the U.S. government in 2002 on suspicion of aiding Al Qaeda. His story includes extraordinary rendition, physical and mental abuse, and the nightmarish legal limbo he remains in—Slahi is still incarcerated even though a federal judge ordered his release in 2010. The book debuted at no. 14 on the New York Times bestseller list. Shamsi sat down with Reason TV's Anthony L. Prison guard sex: Guantanamo detainee forced into some dirty group action
One of the longest-held prisoners at Guantanamo Bay says that he was abused and tortured during his early years in U.S. captivity in a book to be published Tuesday. In “Guantanamo Diary,” Mohamedou Ould Slahi, 44, talks of beatings, abuse, death threats and mock executions. The 466-page book, partially redacted by U.S. officials, looks to be the first lengthy account about life inside the prison by a current Guantanamo inmate. Slahi became a member of al-Qaeda after traveling to Afghanistan in the 1990s, but he claims he left the group in 1992. He was detained after the 9/11 attacks on suspicion of being involved in an unsuccessful Los Angeles bomb plot in 1999. Slahi was taken to Guantanamo in 2002 after being interrogated in Mauritania, Jordan and Afghanistan. In one account, he recalls being told he was going to be taught about “great American s*x” and abused by two female prison guards. In an excerpt posted on Speigel Online Slahi wrote, “I stood up in the same painful position as I had every day for about 70 days. “I would rather follow order and reduce the pain that would be caused when the guards come to play; the guards used every contact opportunity to beat the hell out of the detainee. “As soon as I stood up, the two _____ took off their blouses, and started to talk all kind of dirty stuff you can imagine, which I minded less. While they were talking dirty to him, they apparently played around with his junk. “What hurt me most was them forcing me to take part in a sexual t***esome in the most degrading manner. Both _______ stuck on me, literally one on the front and the other older _______ stuck on my back rubbing ____ whole body on mine. Title: N. Korea releases American detainee Jeffrey Fowle After being held for some six months,… Jeffrey Fowle, one of three American detainees in North Korea, was released on Tuesday. Washington confirmed that he seemed to be healthy and that he was on his way home. Hwang Sung-hee has more. Jeffrey Fowle, one of three Americans being held in North Korea, was released Tuesday. Without providing details, the U.S. State Department confirmed that Fowle was flown home on a U.S. Air Force passenger jet and appeared to be in good health. The 56-year-old American was arrested in April for leaving a bible in his hotel room. While Washington welcomed Pyongyang′s surprise move, it drew attention to the two remaining U.S. detainees. "We think this is a positive step, but that does not change the fact that we remain concerned about Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller." Washington thanked the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang for helping arrange Fowle′s release. A senior South Korean official with knowledge of the matter said the move does not appear to be an outcome of talks between Washington and Pyongyang. But the prospect of dialogue between the two foes seems to be budding. Speaking at a forum in Washington Tuesday, U.S. Special Envoy for the six-party nuclear talks Sydney Seiler rejected the widespread view that Washington is insisting on preconditions for restarting nuclear talks. Seiler stressed that the six-party dialogue would have to be first and foremost about denuclearization, but added that could be demonstrated by North Korea holding off on its current nuclear activities. The U.S. official said Washington is willing to listen to North Korea′s list of demands and complaints to encourage them to make the right decisions. Korea releases American detainee Jeffrey Fowle North Korea has released an American detainee. The regime says it was its leader Kim Jong-un′s decision... following U.S. President Barack Obama′s continued requests. And now, eyes turn to the other two Americans still held captive in the North. Hwang Sung-hee has our top story. Jeffrey Fowle, one of three Americans being held in North Korea, was released Tuesday. Without providing details, the U.S. State Department confirmed that Fowle was flying home on a U.S. Air Force passenger jet and appeared to be in good health. The 56-year-old American was arrested in April for leaving a bible in his hotel. While Washington welcomed Pyongyang′s surprise move, it drew attention to the two remaining U.S. detainees. "We think this is a positive step, but that does not change the fact that we remain concerned about Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller." Washington thanked the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang for helping arrange Fowle′s release. A senior South Korean official with knowledge of the matter said the move does not appear to be an outcome of talks between Washington and Pyongyang. But the prospect of dialogue between the two foes seems to be budding. Speaking at a forum in Washington Tuesday, U.S. Special Envoy for the six-party nuclear talks Sydney Seiler rejected the widespread view that Washington is insisting on preconditions for restarting nuclear talks. Seiler stressed that the six-party dialogue would have to be first and foremost about denuclearization, but added that could be demonstrated by North Korea holding off on its current nuclear activities. The U.S. official said Washington is willing to listen to North Korea′s list of demands and complaints to encourage them to make the right decisions. And that leaves two Americans still being held captive by the regime. And now eyes turn to whether Pyongyang will release them as well. Hwang Sung-hee has our top story. Jeffrey Fowle, one of three Americans being held in North Korea, was released Tuesday. Ex-Gitmo Detainee Held in Uganda Over Killing of Prosecutor
Hunting for suspects in the killing of a prosecutor who pursued Islamic extremists, Ugandan authorities arrested a Ugandan man who had previously been held by the United States at its prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before being released in 2006. Jamal Kiyemba was arrested with three others in a Kampala suburb Tuesday, Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga said on Wednesday. Enanga said U.S. officials helped track down Kiyemba. He said there was no conclusive evidence tying Kiyemba to the killing on March 30 of Ugandan prosecutor Joan Kagezi, but that detectives were questioning him about his possible role and about other offenses. Kagezi had been a prosecutor in the ongoing trial of 12 suspects accused of being involved in the July 2010 bombings here in which more than 70 people were killed while watching the soccer World Cup final on TV. The attack was carried out by al-Shabab, the Somali Islamic extremist group. A U.S. military file signed by the then commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, Brig. Gen. Jay W. Hood, said Kiyemba was arrested by Pakistani police near Peshawar as he attempted to enter Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the company of a probable al-Qaida operative, a suspected al-Qaida operative and a "low-level jihadist.'' The 2004 document said Kiyemba had received training in the use of the AK-47 assault in Peshawar but concluded, in recommending that he be transferred to another country for continued detention, that his threat level was "medium'' and his intelligence value "low.'' Allegations in such documents are often obtained from unreliable third parties and are not 100 percent reliable. Kiyemba is a convert to Islam who once lived in Britain before he traveled to Pakistan, Enanga said. Ugandan police on Tuesday arrested at least six suspects. Kagezi was shot twice by gunmen after she left her car — in which she was traveling with two of her children on the way home from work — to buy groceries in a Kampala suburb. An ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee has been arrested in Uganda for questioning over his possible role in the killing of a top prosecutor, police say. Jamal Kiyemba, a Ugandan, was arrested with the the help of US officials in the capital on Tuesday, police added. Prosecutor Joan Kagezi was shot dead on 30 March, a day before the trial of men accused of involvement in bombings. Mr Kiyemba, a former UK resident, was freed from Guantanamo Bay in 2006 without being charged with any offence. He was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 for alleged links with al-Qaeda, and later transferred to the controversial US-run detention centre in Cuba. 'Motorbike gunmen' "There was an operation which we carried out with our counter-terrorism team because we suspect that Jamal Kiyemba and his colleagues have been involved in some form of criminality," Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga told Associated Press news agency. There was no conclusive evidence to link him to Ms Kagazi's killing, but he was being questioned about his possible role in her murder and in other crimes, he added. Gunmen on a motorbike shot dead Ms Kagezi in a suburb of Kampala. She was prosecuting 13 men accused of being linked to suicide bombings which killed 76 people in Kampala in 2010. The US deported Mr Kiyemba to Uganda after the UK refused to take him back. He had lived in the UK for eight years before travelling to Pakistan. Nigeria's military says it has rescued at least 160 more women and children who had been abducted by Boko Haram and were being held in the Sambisa Forest, considered to be the armed group's last stronghold.
