This short animated video will give you an overview of rainforests. What are rain forests? Why are they called so? Where would you find them? Benefits of Rainforests? Layers of a rainforest....Ideal for kids wanting a solid overview. The word 'forest' is generic in nature. Just like the word 'shoe' for example. My shoes can be classified as sports shoes, hiking shoes or formal shoes. Similarly, forests too can be classified. We can classify a forest based on the nature of its trees or the species that live there or its climate. Based on such factors, some forest types are: coniferous forests, plantation forests and of course rain forests. Rainforests are of 2 types. Tropical and Temperate. Tropical rainforests are found in the tropics or close to the equator. They experience high temperatures and rainfall throughout the year. Some rain forests are so dense that it could take rain as long as 10 minutes to reach the ground. And since it rains a lot in such forests, they are called rainforests. So where would we find such forests? Major tropical rainforests are found in Asia, Africa and South America. The Amazon rain forest in South America, for example, is the world’s largest tropical rain forest. The Amazon river , which is the world’s second longest river also flows though this forest. Some other well known tropical rain forests are the Congo rain forest in Africa, the Harapan rainforest in Asia and the Daintree rainforest in Australia. Temperate rain forests lie between the tropics and polar circles of the globe. They are a lot cooler than tropical rain forests and less wet. Nice. So what creatures would we find in a rain forest? Let’s start with an interesting fact : Though rain forests cover only 6% of the earth, they contain more than 50% of the world’s plant and animal species. Scientists also believe that there are millions of plants and animals in rain forests that are YET to be discovered. These creatures are found in different layers of the rainforest. Layers : Now what does that mean? Imagine the rain forest as a 3 story building. The ground floor is dark and covered with leaves and dead plants. This floor or layer is also called the forest floor. And some families who live here are the jaguar family, gorilla family and elephant family. The first floor is a bit brighter. It is also called the understory layer. Some frog , butterfly, bird and snake families live here. And let me tell you, the snakes and frogs are sometimes not the best of neighbours. Then there are families who love the second floor or Canopy layer. These are bird and monkey families. Many insects live here too along with some snakes. Finally we have the penthouses on the 3rd floor. This is also called the Emergent Layer. Some Snake and Monkey families live here along with other families such as bats and bugs. Nice friendly neighbourhood, eh! And the sounds, sights and colours of rainforests are amazing. But we live in cities and towns. How do rainforests benefit us? This answer could be a very long one my friends. So let me keep it simple: Rain forests are called the lungs of the Earth. Now what does this mean? Our bodies have lungs, right? And our lungs provide us with Oxygen. And this Oxygen is critical to our survival. Now imagine the Earth as One BIG body. Rain forests act as the lungs of the Earth, providing it with Oxygen. And who uses the Earth’s Oxygen, you ask? Well, we humans do, thanks to our lungs! So as you can see, rain forests are critical for OUR very survival. Rain forests also have a huge influence on our diet. An astounding number of fruits, vegetables, nuts, drinks, oils and flavourings come from rainforests. Rainforests are also a rich source of medicine. And as I mentioned before, scientists are still discovering new things about rain forests. Fascinating right? So do you think we are protecting our rain forests? Well, rainforests used to cover 14% of the Earth’s surface but due to deforestation now only cover around 6%. This is an alarming statistic so we should all do our bit to help.- published: 09 Sep 2014

What is Amazon rainforest? A documentary report all about Amazon rainforest for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment. The Amazon rainforest (Portuguese: or ;, or usually ; ; ), also known in English as Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle, is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This basin encompasses, of which are covered by the rainforest. This region includes territory belonging to nine nations. The majority of the forest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. States or departments in four nations contain "Amazonas" in their names. The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests, and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species. Around 40% to 75% of all biotic species are indigenous to the rainforests. It has been estimated that there may be many millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth" and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. The hoary bark of these Gondwanan survivors is softened by dark-green coats of lichens and bryophytes. The Antarctic beech forests protected in the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area support one of the nation's greatest concentrations of marsupial, bird, frog and snake species. Descending deep into Dorrigo's subtropical rainforest along eroded basalt terraces, we spot strangler figs and walkingstick palms and our eyes follow the mossy, buttressed trunks of booyong trees up into a canopy draped with vines and studded with epiphytes. Birdsong rings out from these treetop gardens and waterfalls trickle under the track and disappear beneath bracken ferns that carpet the gully below. Our long descent ends at a suspension bridge that spans the void beneath Crystal Shower Falls, swinging and swaying about 20 metres above the river gully and leading walkers into a fern-covered cavern behind the waterfall to gaze back out through its broad shimmering veil. One of 50 sites between Newcastle and Brisbane that form the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area (WHA), Dorrigo National Park appeals for its accessibility, attracting around 150,000 visitors every year. But it's for a riverside camp in Nymboi-Binderay National Park that we've journeyed inland to where the Nymboida River's rampaging rapids thrill rafters with a wild whitewater ride. West of Dorrigo, Moonpar Forest Drive cuts a narrow path north through stands of giant tallowwood trees to Platypus Flat, a serene stretch of riverbank where deep pools momentarily curb the 165km-long Nymboida River, known by its Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal name. We select a site between quiet campers stirring pots and stoking fires and after Maya's steaming alfresco bath, spend the hours before sunset on the water's edge watching platypus and river turtles bubble to the surface. Google just added zipline to the growing list of ways it's captured Street View images from far-flung locations around the world. The company's newest collection of Street View photography used a zipline to help document the upper canopy of an Amazon rainforest. The latest images, the result of a partnership with the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation, allow you to view the trees and other plant life in a section of the Amazon rainforest— from the forest floor to the upper canopy — through the lens of a zipline mounted camera. FAS came up with the idea of the zipline and borrowed Google's Trekker, Google's special camera for capturing Street View photos, through its loan program, which lends the cameras out to nonprofits and other organizations. Karin Tuxen-Bettman, program manger for Google Earth who worked with FAS on the project, said, "The big challenge was finding where to put the zipline. This wasn't an eco-tourism location where they had these sites already chosen and set up. Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall, with definitions based on a minimum normal annual rainfall of 1750-2000 mm (68-78 inches). The monsoon trough, alternatively known as the intertropical convergence zone, plays a significant role in creating the climatic conditions necessary for the Earth's tropical rainforests.
Around 40% to 75% of all biotic species are indigenous to the rainforests. It has been estimated that there may be many millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth" and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world's oxygen turnover, sometimes misnamed oxygen production, processing it through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and consuming it through respiration.
The undergrowth in a rainforest is restricted in many areas by the poor penetration of sunlight to ground level. This makes it easy to walk through undisturbed, mature rainforest. If the leaf canopy is destroyed or thinned, the ground beneath is soon colonized by a dense, tangled growth of vines, shrubs and small trees, called a jungle. There are two types of rainforest, tropical rainforest and temperate rainforest.
