Over A Million Brazilians Protest Against The President

  • Updated: 15 Mar 2015
More than a million Brazilians have joined demonstrations against President Dilma Rousseff, with many asking for her impeachment. The protesters say the president must have known about a corruption scandal in the state oil firm, Petrobras. The political opposition say much of the alleged bribery took place when she was head of the company. But Ms Rousseff has been exonerated in an investigation by the attorney general and denies involvement. Most of the politicians accused of taking bribes in a kickback scheme come from the governing coalition. 'Virtues, values, dreams' Protests have taken place across 22 Brazilian states and the federal capital, Brasilia. The largest demonstration went ahead in Sao Paulo, a major opposition stronghold, attracting more than 500,000 people. Many of the protesters waved Brazilian flags and wore the yellow shirts of the national football team. They shouted slogans against corruption and the Workers' Party government. Opposition parties have backed Sunday's protests but have not openly called for impeachment of the president, says the BBC's Gary Duffy in Sao Paulo. Senator Aecio Neves, who was defeated by a narrow margin in October's presidential vote, issued a statement praising the protests. He said Brazilians "went to the streets to reunite with their virtues, their values and also with their dreams". 'Coup attempt' In Brasilia a crowd of 40,000 was reported, gathering outside the Congress building. In Rio de Janeiro, where Ms Rousseff won 55% of the vote in the October presidential election, police said around 25,000 people had joined a protest there. "There's no point in complaining only on social media, we have to be here and show that we are really fed up," businesswoman Daniela Mello told AP news agency in Rio. Friday saw supporters of President Rousseff out in force, with tens of thousands taking to the streets. Her supporters say calls for an impeachment, less than five months after she was elected to a second four-year term, amount to a coup attempt. The Workers' Party has been in power since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in for his first term in January 2003. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court approved the investigation of 54 people for their alleged involvement in the kickback scheme. The list was prepared by Attorney General Rodrigo Junot who alleged that private companies paid corrupt officials in order to get lucrative Petrobras contracts. According to the investigation, high-profile politicians also took a share of the money siphoned off from the oil company. Mr Junot's list includes Senate President Renan Calheiros, President of the Chamber of Deputies Eduardo Cunha, former Energy Minister Edison Lobao and former President Fernando Collor de Mello. All deny corruption allegations.

Cyclone Pam leaves 'most' of Vanuatu population homeless
Cyclone Pam leaves 'most' of Vanuatu population homeless

  • Updated: 15 Mar 2015
The president of Vanuatu has told the BBC most of his people are homeless after the devastating cyclone that hit the Pacific island nation on Friday. Speaking from Japan, Baldwin Londsdale told the BBC that most of the buildings in the capital Port Vila had been destroyed by Cyclone Pam. A Red Cross spokesman described the situation as apocalyptic - in some areas, entire villages were swept away. At least eight people are reported to have been killed. However, it is feared the toll will rise sharply as rescuers reach outlying islands. Thousands of people spent a second night in shelters. The category five storm, with winds of up to 270km/h (170mph), had veered off its expected course and struck populated areas. Vanuatu's population of 267,000 is spread over 65 islands with about 47,000 people living in Port Vila. In a statement on Sunday, Oxfam Australia said up to 90% of housing in Port Vila had reportedly been seriously damaged. "The scale of humanitarian need will be enormous and the proud people of Vanuatu are going to need a lot of help to rebuild their homes and their lives." Immediate priorities, he said, were providing shelter, clean water and sanitation. Port Vila's airport has been closed since the cyclone struck but officials said they hoped it might partly reopen on Sunday to allow in the first relief planes. A UN disaster assessment team is due to arrive in Vanuatu in the coming hours. 'One toilet between 300' Mark Le Roux, of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, told the BBC the situation in Port Vila was "pretty grim". "We have 20 evacuation centres with about 2,000 people in them, some of our evacuation centres have up to 300 people sharing one toilet," he said. Chloe Morrison, an emergency communications officer with World Vision in Port Vila, said residents had woken to much calmer weather on Sunday. She said communications were still down in many areas and her group had been unable to account for many of its 76 staff members on the islands. She said it would have been a "very, very tough time" for anyone not in a secure shelter during the cyclone. President Lonsdale made an impassioned plea for international help earlier. Cyclone Pam batters Port Vila, Vanuatu. 14 March 2015 "I am speaking to you today with a heart that is so heavy," he said at the UN Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan. "I stand to appeal on behalf of the government and the people to give a helping hand in this disaster." The extent of the devastation is unlikely to be known for several days, said Tom Skirrow, Save the Children's Vanuatu country director. Unconfirmed reports on Saturday said 44 people had died in Penama province in the north-east of Vanuatu, according to the UN's Office for the Co-ordination for Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA). Australia says it is preparing to send a crisis response team to Vanuatu if needed. New Zealand pledged NZ$1m (£500,000; $741,000), the EU promised €1m (£710,000) and the UK said it would give up to £2m in aid. Pam had already caused major damage on other Pacific islands, including Kiribati and the Solomon Islands. Tuvalu, a group of nine tiny islands north-east of Vanuatu, also declared a state of emergency after the cyclone caused flash floods there.

Vanuatu\'s population of 267,000 is spread over 65 islands with about 47,000 people living in Port Vila.

In a statement on Sunday, Oxfam Australia said up to 90% of housing in Port Vila had reportedly been seriously damaged.
