Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations - in Sicily.
Sicily has become a major new weigh station for migrants from Africa and the Middle East desperate to start new lives in Europe. Since the alarming deaths off the island of Lampedusa in 2013, the influx to Sicily has soared. There, they wait to see if their asylum applications will be accepted. Penniless, without documentation, hopes exhausted and futures dark, they felt compelled to risk their lives at sea. Many of the migrants are in their early 20s. Gambian migrant Lamin Beyai, age 20,… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/03/31/sicily-harbouring-record-migrants-forced-into-long-wait-for-asylum What are the top stories today? Visit Taormina in Sicily Taormina is the most picturesque city in Sicily because its houses were built in a small area but with the 250-meter difference between the levels. Because it's been continually inhabited since it was set up, ancient Greek and Roman buildings medieval palaces, churches and modern hotels stand next to each other. [Foreign Language] Castello de Taormina was built on the 400-meter Peak of Tauro Mountain. From here, we can see the whole city; the sea, the nearby Isola Bella Island and the cone of Etna. Its minister, dating back to the 13th century was irrelatively simple building but it's bare and palaces, Palazzo Courvaja and Palazzo Ducal de San Stefano are rather ornate. Even today, Sicily is judged mainly based on books and films. For example, based on Mario Pozo's novels the Sicilian or the trilogy, Godfather. Sicily is thought to be world of the mafia and blood feud, the Vendetta. There's no doubt about the existence of the mafia but it sure that tourist won't be able to notice their actions. Public security isn't worst than anywhere else in Italy, thanks to the police. If we're privileged to see a wedding in such an Old Italian town, it's inevitable to remember the film Matrimonio all'Italiana; of course it was different when Sofia Loren and Mastroianni walking along the narrow cobalt streets of Taormina, we can feel the taste of Italy the most. Small antique shops, the small work of local craftsmen, the Mediterranean style mixed with antique elements of the houses, the color and smell of the flowers are impressive. The best known site of the town, the former Greek Taorminian is the Greek theater. The staggered seats of the huge semi-circle arc were carved into the rocks, so that behind the stage the most beautiful sites of nature will be the scenery. The famous Hungarian painter Czontvary was also impressed by the site. His masterpiece was contributed to increasing the fame of Taormina. We have to work to get to know the town, up steps, down steps. Fortunately, we can reach the Greek theater by cable cars as well. The acoustics of the theater are also excellent. Every summer, concerts and performances take place here. From Taormina, we can go for nice trips to the thermal baths of Ali Terme. The elegant beaches of Forza d'Agro or Mazaro and some romantic ruins of castles can also be found in the mountains nearby. Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is the most diverse region in Italy,a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures. Throughout the history of Sicily there have been many battles, rulers, cultures and religions. Prior to Roman rule both the Greeks and the Carthagians fought against each other. Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.
Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and the most diverse region in Italy, a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures.Catania, in the northeast of the island, is Sicily’s second largest city that has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. It is believed that Greek settlers from Chalkidi founded it and some centuries later, it was conquered by the Romans and later, the Arabs brought the city a new wave of prosperity.Noto is a charming town with around 20,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto’s historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Cathedrale Di San Nicolo also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996.A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860.In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than 800 years, has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop of Palermo and the Norman King, William.Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Travel Guide Sicily http://bit.ly/124XYM9 Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Erice in Sicily, a historic town which had an important role in the antiquity. Visit Erice in Sicily Trapani, a town founded by the Punic, used to be the harbor of Eryx. The location of which is nice and is called Erice today. It had an important role in the antiquity. The pharaohs of the town built on top of the mountain at 750 meters, was an important point of orientation for shipment sailing around Sicily. We can often watch the mountain tops attracting the clouds as if they use them as a blanket. In artichoke, we can watch this close-up. There's often fog and rain, and clouds covering the sky above the town. What can we do while it's raining? Let's sit in the famous confectionary, eat a cake with almonds and marzipan or a lemon pie. Sicilian cakes, especially the ones with almonds are well-known and delicious. We can drink a cup of good cappuccino, maybe the strongest and tastiest anywhere. Or let's read the "Sweet Life in Italy" by Frances Mayes who was in love with Italy. By the time we finish the chapter about Erice, it has stopped raining and the sun is shining again. The Citadel Castelo Normano may have been built on the former site of the sanctuary partly from its stones. Actually, there are two medieval fortresses here; Castelo Populi and Castello Venera. Today, it's impossible to day where one of them ends and the other begins. In clear weather, there's a good view of the fortress and the parking lot in the distance. We can see the [Foreign Language] Grande and the [Foreign Language] Mountains towards the inside of the island on the coast to Sciacca and in the sea to the nearby Egadi Islands and Pantelleria further away. Today, Erice is a frequent destination for excursions, reachable by car or cable car from Trapani. The town surrounded by walls is not very big; but, its alleys are so zigzagged that it's easy to get lost. Erice considers Garibaldi to be its own hero visible by the memorial tablet placed on the wall of the town hall. Let's read how the hero of the war of independence is described by Fred Mustard Stewart in his novel. "All in all he had a pleasant face with his famous grizzled-red beard. Thousands of women dreamt about him all over the world reading the story of his famous love with Anita de Silva which was loved at first sight and she had fought in South America and Italy in his side before she died tragically soon". The neighborhood is famous for its salt furnaces. Boat men and tuna fishermen, if it isn't fishing season take us gladly from the harbor of Trapani to the Egadi Islands. In one of Levanzo's caves, we can even see ancient drawings on the rocks. In his book, they found Adesea, Aaron the Bradford thought he had found Goat Island about which Romeros was writing on Favignana Island, one of these groups of islands. Archaeologist excavated a Venus sanctuary as well which was built in the 6th century B.C in honor of the Goddess of Fertility. noodls 2015-03-31Sicily (Italian and Sicilian: Sicilia, [siˈtʃiːlja]; [sɪˈɕilja]) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea; along with surrounding minor islands, it constitutes an autonomous region of Italy, the Regione Autonoma Siciliana (Sicilian Autonomous Region).
Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. It extends from the tip of the Apennine peninsula from which it is separated only by the narrow Strait of Messina, towards the North African coast. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, which is at 3,320 m (10,890 ft) the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate.
The earliest archeological evidence of human dwelling on the island dates from 8000 BC. At around 750 BC, Sicily became a Greek colony and for the next 600 years it was the site of the Greek-Punic and Roman-Punic wars, which ended with the Roman destruction of Carthage. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Sicily often changed hands, and during the early Middle Ages it was ruled in turn by the Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Later on, the Kingdom of Sicily lasted between 1130 and 1816, subordinated to the crowns of Aragon, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and finally the Bourbons, as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was united with the rest of Italy in 1860, but a subsequent economic collapse led to a wave of emigration, separatism, and the emergence of the Mafia, whose criminal activities pose problems to this day. After the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946, Sicily was given special status as an autonomous region.
Sat in peaceful scenery
The city lights shine bright around me
The smell of last night's dinner is still breezing through the air
Dozing in tranquility
The morning sun hangs high above me
Clicking camera shutters catch bewildered foreign stares
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
Clifftop is our tapestry
The sunlit sky does well to cool me
Drifting past the villas in a coach without a care
Blackjack in serenity
Fellow makers ride beside me
Walking through an archway and admiring what lies there
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
Sat in peaceful scenery
The city lights shine bright around me
Smell of last night's dinner is still breezing through the air
I was in Sicily reading Henry Miller
You were in New York City you were getting thinner
I was in discos I was listening to Madonna
You were in sweat clothes looking like Jane Fonda
One day I called you because I couldn't resist
It cost me eighty bucks I don't think it was worth it
This is the last thing I expected to be
A broken hearted troubadour in sunny Sicily
The night was raining and my window was stuck
My driver took the shore roads to avoid the heavy trucks
While he was telling me about the Mafia
I was thinking 'bout our wedding what the marriage done to you
Feeling so lonely my esteem so low
Find myself in Italy I'm singing in a disco
This is the last thing I wanted to be
A broken hearted troubadour in sunny Sicily
Looking out my window I see the stars above
I'm closer to Tunisia than to anyone I love
I've seen the ruins of the Romans and the Greeks
Compared to my own empire they really look so neat
Some say my songs are long and over complicated
But they're very personal I say they're underrated
This is the last thing I expected to be
