A Queensland teenager has been charged over the death of a 17-year-old female in an alleged illegal street race.

The charges date back to a fatal traffic crash on December 11, 2014.

Sunshine Coast teen Hope Dell died at the scene while the driver and the backseat passenger, Caity Evans, were taken to Nambour Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police allege about 9.55pm on December 11 last year, the car left the road and hit a tree near the intersection of Caloundra Road and Daniel Street.

The Sunshine Coast Daily reported firefighters tore the roof off the wreck to reach the driver and Ms Evans.

Ms Evans was released from hospital a few days after the crash and the driver, who has now been charged but is yet to face court, was released a few days after that.

On Monday, police charged the 18-year-old Little Mountain driver with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst excessively speeding whilst taking part in an unlawful race.

He is due in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on April 8.
