Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia made landfall along the central Queensland coast on Feb. 20, near the community of Rockhampton. The storm made landfall as a fearsome Category 5 cyclone but has since weakened to a Category 1 storm over land. Damage has been reported in the hardest hit areas, including Rockhampton, Gladstone and Yeppoon. Thousands lost power due to the high winds, prompting many residents to leave their homes. Although the storm is weakening, it still poses flooding risks as it moves southeast between Gladstone and Bundaberg. http://www.mashable.com LIKE us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/mashable.video FOLLOW us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/mashablevideo FOLLOW us on TUMBLR: http://mashable.tumblr.com FOLLOW our INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/mashable JOIN our circle on GOOGLE PLUS: http://plus.google.com/+Mashable Subscribe!: http://bit.ly/1ko5eNd Mashable is the leading independent news site for all things tech, social media, and internet culture. http://www.youtube.com/mashable

Australia is being bombarded by two tropical cyclones almost at once. The latest threat comes from Cyclone Marcia, which is likely to make landfall in southern Queensland. The storm is likely to dissipate west of Brisbane, inland. The storm is likely to make landfall with winds of 50mph or higher, and heavy rain is a certainty for the landfall area. Though, due to the quick movement of the storm, flooding issues are likely to be less prominent than otherwise may have been the case.

Check out the latest tour prices in Cairns - CLICK LINK http://fttv.experienceoz.com.au/cairns We stopped in to check out the some of the great natural experiences that can be enjoyed in Tropical North Queensland. We started in Cairns and went out for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We sailed out to the reef to Michaelmas Cay with Passions of paradise. The great thing about this location is that you can snorkel right of the beach and if you are a certified diver you can also scuba dive this location. We then decided to head north to check out the Daintree Rainforest. To get to the Daintree head towards Port Douglas. On your way to the Daintree be sure to check out Mossman Gorge, if its a hot day its a great place to go for a swim. When you get to the Daintree there are many great walking tracks. As you adventure out along these tracks there are many different experiences that will enjoy and if you are lucky enough you may even see a Cassowary in the wild. The Atherton Tablelands offers a range of things to do and see. Some of the places to visit are the crater lakes of lake Eacham and Barrine through to the Curtain Fig a must see. Heading further into the Great Dividing range you visit Mount Mulligan.

So we made our way just north of Brisbane to escape for a few days to Queensland's Sunshine Coast. From the moment you dig your toes into the golden sand or breathe in the clean hinterland air, you'll begin to feel different. After checking out some of the great beaches we made our way through the Sunshine Coasts Hinterland to enjoy some breath-taking views. The scene-stealing Glasshouse Mountains are the headline act, and are ably supported by lush rainforests, mist-shrouded waterfalls, and spectacular flora and fauna. Australia Zoo is in the foothills of the Hinterland is the home of the famous Steve Irwin also known as the Crocodile Hunter. this place will definitely provide you with some up close and personal wildlife experiences. We started with a trip to Wallaman falls before heading to Paluma for a swim at both bIg and little crystal creek Once we got into the town centre and went for a walk along the strand before visiting Reef HQ. Magnetic island is a short ferry ride from Townsville and is worth the trip some great things to see and there are many opportunities that will allow you to get up close to some Australian wildlife. http://www.expedia.com/Gold-Coast.d180064.Destination-Travel-Guides Australia’s Gold Coast is in the heart of subtropical Queensland, rife with natural beauty and a human spirit dedicated to vitality, fun, and enjoying life. The skyline of Gold Coast practically dips its toes in the ocean, and much of the area is rich in lush greenery and waterfalls. The north coast of this city began as a vacation retreat in the 1850’s, and maintains its position as the Gold Coast’s heart and soul of entertainment and surfing. Many Gold Coast tours begin in the north and work their way south. The atmosphere in the north is quite bustling, while the south coast has a slower vibe and is a bit more relaxed. Start your trip to Gold Coast with a trip to the SkyPoint observation deck, one of the Gold Coast sightseeing gems. The deck grants stunning views of area beaches, parks, and water. Head south to Burleigh Heads next, where you will be met with a national park and ideal surf breaks. This area is known as an aboriginal gathering place. Once you’ve had your fill of sun-soaked activities in Burleigh Head, head even further south to Coolangatta, a gateway for international travelers and home to the likes of sheltered beaches, a river, and plenty of shady parkland. Remember that Gold Coast also happens to be the theme park capital of Australia, which helps drive Gold Coast tourism and serves as a nice complement to the lazy beach life also available. After hitting the water for some surf, go to Dreamworld, which is the largest theme park in Australia, and get an adrenaline rush on one of the many rollercoasters. SeaWorld™ and Warner Bros.® Movie World™ are also nearby. Top off your trip down under with a trip to Mount Tamorine, a 30 minute drive inland from the coast. On the ridge of a volcano, Mount Tamborine offers a bounty rainforest trails and you can sip on local wines in Tamborine Village. What will you do on your next trip to the Gold Coast? We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point. There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive. If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be. Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night. Queensland is proudly known as the sunshine state of Australia, and any time of year makes a good time to visit Brisbane (often called Brizzy by locals). Brisbane sightseeing is marked by parks, coastline, gardens, and more. Whether you want to play in the water or partake in some epic shopping, this Australian city welcomes you. Start your Brisbane tour with a stop at Mount Coot-tha. The name of this mountain peak is derived from the Maori word for honey, which was once found in abundance here. While you’re at Mount Coot-tha, explore the stars of the Southern Hemisphere at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. Next, visit a laughing kookaburra at Brisbane Botanical Gardens. Don’t forget about the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where you can visit koalas, kangaroos, and other local animals. Once you’re ready to commune with humans again, head to Queen Street Mall for the heart of Brisbane’s shopping. The South Bank is rich with free activities, markets, and a lagoon where you can cool off. Spare some time to take the public ferry to Newfoundland Park, where you can visit the restored Brisbane Powerhouse, filled with art installations. To end your day, climb the Story Bridge, an ideal spot to watch the sun set over the city. Don’t worry, Brisbane tourism includes many fine and casual dining options. What will you do on your next trip to Brisbane? Julia creek is on the Overlanders way between Townsville and Mt Isa. Having a reputation as being on of the friendliest little towns in the outback, it is not long before you the locals are saying hi and stopping for a chat. The PROA Redclaw Farm does free tours to show you how they grow and harvest these little freshwater crayfish. And then you get to taste and buy them fresh from the farm. While in Julia Creek, a visit to the Top Pub shouldn't be missed. They definitely know how to have fun in this friendly little town.

We visited Mount Isa, the only city in outback Australia. Described as the Oasis of the Outback - a gleaming mirage on the horizon for travellers from all directions - Mount Isa nestles among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River. Mount Isa has grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main draw-cards for visitors each year. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy an Outback sunset. The rugged terrain is a four wheel driver's haven, and visitors can explore the region just as the pioneers of the region did many years ago. Ian R Crane reflects upon his time in the Queensland Gasfields. Seven years ago, the Unconventional Gas Industry rolled across Southern Queensland, Australia. Many landowners sold out to the Gas Companies ... condemning those who didn't, to lives of unimaginable misery. The words of Kogan landowner Brian Monk are extremely poignant, "It started with just ONE WELL!"

This digital story explores the contribution and experiences of indigenous Queenslanders during the First World War. Despite the oppressive policies and practices of the Protection Era, between 1,250 and 1,500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women volunteered for the AIF, and approximately 300 were from Queensland. Indigenous Queenslanders tried to enlist for a variety of reasons, and Indigenous Languages Coordinator Desmond Crump discusses the effect of the Defence Act (1909), which excluded from service 'those who were not of 'substantially European origin or descent'. In 1917 the Act was amended to so that 'half castes' could enlist. While this increased indigenous recruitment, it did not guarantee indigenous soldiers any of the rights afforded their non-indigenous comrades after the war, and they returned to a life of restriction and discrimination.

Hear from ballet legend Peter Schaufuss about his award-winning production being performed by Queensland Ballet at the Playhouse, QPAC from 20 - 31 March, 2015. Woken on his wedding day morning by a beautiful, winged sylph, the Scotsman James is utterly bewitched. Elusive and playful, she professes her love for him. James’s obsessive pursuit of the otherworldly creature leads him to abandon his fiancée and follow the sylph into the dangerous realm of the forest sprites. Here, he realises that in reaching for unattainable love, he has lost everything. La Sylphide by the Danish ballet master August Bournonville premiered in Copenhagen by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836. It is a captivating work which remains one of the most loved Romantic ballets to this day. This production is the award winning London production by Peter Schaufuss which premiered in 1979, by London Festival Ballet (now known as English National Ballet). It embraces the characteristic Bournonville style of graceful, seemingly effortless dance, performed with great dramatic impact. Australian Broadcasting Corporation 2015-03-26Coordinates: 23°0′S 143°0′E / 23°S 143°E / -23; 143 Queensland is the second-largest and third-most populous state of Australia, located in the northeast of the country. It is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, southwest and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. Queensland has a population of 4,580,700, concentrated along the coast and particularly in the state's South East. The state is the world's sixth largest subnational entity, with an area of 1,852,642 km2. The capital and largest city in the state is Brisbane, Australia's third largest city. Referred to as the 'Sunshine State', Queensland is home to 10 of Australia's 30 largest cities and is the nation's third largest economy.
Queensland was first occupied by Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, who arrived at least 40,000 years ago. The first European to land in Queensland was Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1607. In 1770, Lieutenant James Cook claimed the east coast of Australia for the Kingdom of Great Britain. The colony of New South Wales was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip at Sydney; New South Wales at that time included all of what is now Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. Queensland was explored in subsequent decades until the establishment of a penal colony at Brisbane in 1824 by John Oxley. Penal transportation ceased in 1839 and free settlement permitted in 1842. Queensland was separated from New South Wales, forming a self-governing colony, on 6 June 1859, a date now celebrated state-wide as Queensland Day. Queensland achieved statehood with the Federation of Australia on 1 January 1901.
Barack Hussein Obama II (i/bəˈrɑːk huːˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the 44th and current President of the United States. He is the first African American to hold the office. In January 2005, Obama was sworn in as a U.S. Senator in the state of Illinois. He would hold this office until November 2008, when he resigned following his victory in the 2008 presidential election.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
Following an unsuccessful bid against the Democratic incumbent for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for the United States Senate in 2004. Several events brought him to national attention during the campaign, including his victory in the March 2004 Illinois Democratic primary for the Senate election and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He won election to the U.S. Senate in Illinois in November 2004. His presidential campaign began in February 2007, and after a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Rodham Clinton, he won his party's nomination. In the 2008 presidential election, he defeated Republican nominee John McCain, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months later, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In April 2011, he announced that he would be running for re-election in 2012.
