Plot
Set against the background of the Battle of Waterloo, Becky Sharp is the story of Vanity Fair by Thackeray. Becky and Amelia are girls at school together, but Becky is from a "show biz" family, or in other words, very low class. Becky manages to insinuate herself in Amelia's family and gets to know all their friends. From this possibly auspicious- beginning, she manages to ruin her own life, becoming sick, broke, and lonely, and also ruins the lives of many other "loved ones". In the movie we get to see the class distinctions in England at the time, and get a sense of what it was like for the English military at the time of the Napoleonic wars.

Watch as 'Submarine Chancellor' George Osborne advises how to avoid tax A week after the HSBC tax dodging scandal, and Labour call on the Tories to answer key questions of who knew what and when A highly embarrassing video showing a young George Osborne advising how to avoid paying inheritance tax has been uncovered. In the clip, recorded on BBC's Daily Politics in 2003, a fresh-faced Mr Osborne smirks and repeatedly raises his eyebrows as he tells a caller about "clever financial products". The now-Chancellor, who was in his early thirties at the time of the recording, says: "The one piece of advice I would give… is there are some pretty clever financial products which enable you to in effect pass on your home, or the value of your home, to your son or daughter… I probably shouldn’t be advocating this on television.” The footage is likely to cause embarrassment for the Chancellor, who is under pressure from Labour to stop dodging questions on HSBC’s tax avoidance schemes. In a blistering attack on the Tory frontbencher, Labour’s Chris Leslie called on Mr Osborne to end his “week of silence” on the allegations. The Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury said it was still not clear if either the Chancellor or the Prime Minister spoke to ex-HSBC boss Lord Green about the scandal after appointing him a Trade Minister in 2011. BBC’s chief political inquisitor Andrew Neil even joined in the criticism of Mr Osborne’s absence from the airwaves, saying “chance would be a fine thing” when told he should ask the Chancellor about tax dodging activities. Speaking today, Mr Leslie said: “We've now had a week of silence from George Osborne - the submarine Chancellor still hasn't surfaced. But it is time he and David Cameron finally started answering questions about HSBC and Lord Green. “Why has there only been one prosecution out of 1,100 names? “Did David Cameron and George Osborne discuss tax evasion at HSBC with Lord Green? “Why did they appoint Lord Green as a Tory Minister months after the government received these files? “Why did George Osborne and the Treasury sign a deal with the Swiss in 2012 which prevents the UK from actively obtaining similar information in the future? “In this row over tax evasion David Cameron and George Osborne are now guilty of political evasion.” Last Monday, Labour were granted an urgent question in House of Commons as revelations around HSBC advising wealthy clients on tax dodging hit the headlines. But instead of the Chancellor appearing before MPs, junior Treasury minister David Gauke was sent along instead. Shabana Mahmood, Labour’s Shadow Exchequer Secretary, has twice written to the Treasury with a list of questions, including why there has been just a single prosecution arising from the wrongdoing at HSBC and what assurances ministers sought over Lord Green prior to his appointment as a Government minister. Labour says it has had no response to either letter.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has stepped up pressure on George Osborne over the revelations about HSBC. In a letter to the chancellor, Mr Balls poses five questions which he says "cannot continue to be ignored". He has accused the chancellor of keeping quiet about revelations of alleged tax evasion by HSBC clients. Treasury sources have indicated that Mr Osborne has done several interviews in the last few days, and that there is nothing new in Labour's letter. It comes after allegations that HSBC's Swiss private bank may have helped wealthy clients avoid or evade tax. HSBC published a full-page advert in several weekend papers containing an apology over the claims. 'Due diligence' HM Revenue & Customs was given the leaked data in 2010 and has identified 1,100 people who had not paid their taxes. One tax evader has been prosecuted, which has led Labour to question why the prosecution rate has been so low. In his letter, the shadow chancellor asks Mr Osborne - who is currently in Brussels for talks on the eurozone crisis - whether "selective prosecutions" by HMRC were approved by the Treasury. He also challenges Mr Osborne to say what action he took when he was first made aware of the files, and whether he had discussions with the prime minister. He said a Downing Street spokesperson had claimed that "no government minister" had any knowledge of what happened at HSBC, but said HMRC chief executive Lin Homer had said ministers would have been informed. Mr Balls also raises questions over ex-HSBC boss Lord Green's government appointment in his letter to Mr Osborne. Lord Green, who used to run HSBC, was made a Conservative peer in 2010 and appointed as a trade minister eight months after HMRC received the leaked files. He stepped down from a leading financial services body at the weekend, amid claims HSBC may have enabled tax avoidance when he was in charge. Mr Balls has asked the chancellor to provide details of the "due diligence" carried out by the government ahead of his appointment. He also questions whether Mr Osborne or David Cameron ever discussed what happened at HSBC with Lord Green, "or did you turn a blind eye?". The UK's Treasury Committee is to conduct an inquiry into the claims about HSBC. And HMRC met the police and the Serious Fraud Office this week to expand the scope of its investigation into Swiss tax accounts held with HSBC.
