Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Although Most sports teams have employed Team physicians for many years, it is only since the late 20th century that Sport and Exercise Medicine has emerged as a distinct entity in health care.
In recent years Western society has increasingly recognized the dangers of Physical inactivity, and significant efforts have been made within the Public Health community to encourage the nation to become more physically active. To reflect this paradigm shift BASM has renamed itself BASEM (British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine) and the speciality itself has rebranded from Sports Medicine to Sport & Exercise Medicine. Since 2007 several deaneries across the UK have established training programmes in SEM, and recurrent funding for 50 National Training Numbers (NTN’s) is available.
In the past SEM has largely been a special interest among General Practitioners. The minimal level of qualification is a Diploma available from FSEM (Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine), or MSc (with submission of research project) from, and Provided a physician (DO or MD (usually a General Practitioner, or specialist in A&E, Orthopaedic, Rheumatology or Musculoskeletal Radiology) can provide evidence of active involvement in SEM, they will be granted Membership of FSEM

Dr. Colberg has a strong commitment to providing evidenced-based medical care through a patient-centered and holistic approach. When defining the best treatment plan for each patient, he takes into consideration all the components related to the injury, including factors such as the underlying biomechanics of the injury, the patient's needs and expectations, as well as the short and long-term implications that the injury will have on the patient. His areas of expertise also include non-surgical management of fractures and dislocations, peripheral nerve injuries (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome), sport-related spine injuries, pediatric sports injuries, biomechanical evaluation of the injured athlete, implementing sports injury prevention protocols, management of osteoarthritis and screening for potential cases that may have a better outcome by undergoing a surgical procedure.
Dr. Colberg is head team physician for Minor High School and Lawson State Community College. He also serves as team physician for the U.S.A. In addition, he has extensive clinical research experience, including co-leading a national multi-center study on a regenerative medicine procedure called platelet-rich plasma injection. He has published articles in multiple journals and authored chapters in academic textbooks.
Dr. Colberg enjoys spending time with his wife and family and teaching their children to play tennis and other sports. How to lie in sports medicine using statistics by Rod Whiteley
In this Aspetar Tuesday Scientific Lecture, Rod Whiteley sarcastically advises researchers about how to get their work noticed:
1. Don’t let people see your data
2. Use p values
3. Under no circumstances try to replicate positive results
4. Don’t explain differences in terms normal people understand
5. Where possible, use confusing/ misleading terms
Rod is the Lead Research and Education Physiotherapist working at Aspetar Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. He has worked in both rugby and baseball at the highest level. Rod's PhD focused on throwing-related injuries.

JackJack Water therapy
As we prepare Jack for a total hip replacement, we try to implement as many strength building activities as he can handle for his hind quarters. All activities are gradually increased in duration and intensity. Our sports medicine consultant at Cornell suggested we walk him on uneven surfaces as well as walking him through water. Thankfully we live near a creek and while it is generally higher and provides more buoyancy, we were told this also is useful. It certainly appears he is more aware of his foot placement and that he is using full range of motion in terms of extending the rear limbs.

Ricardo E. Colberg, M.D. - Non-Surgial Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Physician
Ricardo E. Colberg, M.D., is a sports medicine and non-operative orthopaedic physician at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
He works closely with physical therapists and other health-related disciplines in order to assist patients in their recovery process from injuries and help them reach their ultimate goal of returning to their everyday activities and sports at their optimal potential.
Dr. Colberg has a special interest in treating acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, including bone, joint, ligament, muscle and tendon injuries. He performs various treatment modalities in the clinic that assist the patient in their recovery from the injury, among them diagnostic musculoskeletal sonography, ultrasound-guided injections, and platelet-rich plasma therapy.
Paralympic Team at the Lakeshore Foundation, Alabama Soccer Association's Olympic Development Program (ODP)and Team CCR (Cahaba Cycles Racing Team). Dr. Colberg has provided sports medicine services to the Chicago White Sox's AA affiliate team, the Birmingham Barons, the Alabama Ballet, the University of Alabama, University of West Alabama and other local high schools and colleges. He has earned the certification of Elite Professional from the United States Professional Tennis Association and is currently working with developing injury prevention protocols for tennis athletes through the American Sports Medicine Institute.
Their favorite pastime is visiting their native island of Puerto Rico, where he likes to go surfing, sailing and scuba diving. Dr. Colberg is an avid tennis player who competes with a local USTA team in Birmingham. He is fluent in both Spanish and English.

JackJack Water therapy
JackJack Water therapy
As we prepare Jack for a total hip replacement, we try to implement as many strength building activities as he can handle for his hind quarters. All activities are gradually increased in duration and intensity. Our sports medicine consultant at Cornell suggested we walk him on uneven surfaces as well as walking him through water. Thankfully we live near a creek and while it is generally higher and provides more buoyancy, we were told this also is useful. It certainly appears he is more aware of his foot placement and that he is using full range of motion in terms of extending the rear limbs.
