With the Government’s program of education reform well underway, the Union questions the continued existence of grammar schools in the United Kingdom, and whether they should not just be tolerated, but be allowed to expand once more. This debate was sponsored by TeachFirst. ****************** PROPOSITION ****************** Robert McCartney is the Chairman of the National Grammar Schools Association, an organisation which seeks to promote selective education. Andrew Shilling leads the Sevenoaks Grammar School Campaign, now at a critical stage in its efforts to win government approval for the project. Shaun Fenton is the current head of Reigate Grammar, and is the only person in the UK to have been headteacher of a Comprehensive, a Grammar School, an Academy, and an Independent school. ****************** OPPOSITION ****************** Melissa Benn is a writer, novelist, and campaigner. In 2011 she published ‘School Wars: the Battle for Britain’s Education’, which studied the comprehensive education system. Michael Pyke is a spokesperson for the Campaign for State Education. CASE has been advocating since the 1960s for comprehensive education. Ndidi Okezie is Executive Director of Regions within TeachFirst, responsible for understanding the specific nature and extent of educational disadvantage in areas TeachFirst operates.
Grammar schools, dominant in the UK until the 1960s, ran under a system of selective education. At age 11 all school students would be given a general intelligence exam. If a student passed they would gain entrance to a more academically based grammar school. If they failed they would be sent to a school focusing more on practical skills. There's an increasing minority within the political establishment who argue that grammar schools should be reintroduced, including the resurgent UK Independence Party, believing that it offers an opportunity for the brightest students to thrive regardless of socioeconomic background. Critics argue that it creates segregation in our society, and only removes a few children from their troubled backgrounds rather than tacking the root causes of deprivation. This week the Manchester Debating Union asks: should we reintroduce grammar schools? Speakers: -- Proposition -- - Robert McCartney QC Barrister and Former Leader of the UK Unionist Party and founder of the National Grammar Schools Association. http://www.ngsa.org.uk/ - Graham Brady MP Conservative MP for Altrincham and Sale West, former Shadow Secretary for Europe and Chairman of the 1992 Committee. http://www.grahambradymp.co.uk/ -- Opposition -- - Melissa Benn Journalist and author, founder of the Local Schools Network which campaigns in favour of a totally comprehensive schooling system. http://melissabenn.com/ - Professor Bernard Barker Emeritus professor of educational leadership and management at the School of Education, University of Leicester, he was the first comprehensive school pupil to become a comprehensive school head teacher in the UK. ----------------------------------------------------- This event is sponsored by Teach First. Huffington Post 2015-04-06A grammar school is one of several different types of school in the history of education in the United Kingdom and some other English-speaking countries, originally a school teaching classical languages but more recently an academically-oriented secondary school.
The original purpose of mediaeval grammar schools was the teaching of Latin. Over time the curriculum was broadened, first to include Ancient Greek, and later English and other European languages, natural sciences, mathematics, history, geography, and other subjects. In the late Victorian era grammar schools were reorganised to provide secondary education throughout England and Wales; Scotland had developed a different system. Grammar schools of these types were also established in British territories overseas, where they have evolved in different ways.
Grammar schools became the selective tier of the Tripartite System of state-funded secondary education operating in England and Wales from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s and continuing in Northern Ireland. With the move to non-selective comprehensive schools in the 1960s and 1970s, some grammar schools became fully independent and charged fees, while most others were abolished or became comprehensive. In both cases, many of these schools kept "grammar school" in their names. Some parts of England retain forms of the Tripartite System, and a few grammar schools survive in otherwise comprehensive areas. Some of the remaining grammar schools can trace their histories to before the 16th century.

Leicester Grammar School (often abbreviated to LGS), is an independent secondary school situated in Great Glen, Leicestershire, England. It was founded in 1981, after the loss of the city's state-funded grammar schools.
Leicester Grammar School is closely affiliated with Leicester Grammar Junior School, and in general over 95% of Junior School leavers are accepted by the senior school.
The school has just over 70 teaching staff and 650 pupils, all of whom are day-students. It has its own preparatory form for children in Year 6, and its own sixth form for Years 12 and 13. Each student at the school is a member of a house, allowing a system of intra-school competition in sports and other pastimes such as chess, general knowledge and karaoke.
The school was founded in 1981 as an independent, selective, co-educational day school in an attempt to recapture the standards and traditions of the city’s former grammar schools. Located in four late-Victorian buildings in Leicester City Centre, the school was established close to Leicester Cathedral and was founded with an Anglican Christian ethos. The first headmaster was John Higginbotham and under his stewardship the school grew from just 96 to 560 pupils within 10 years.

Handsworth Grammar School is voluntary aided grammar school that admits boys from the age of eleven and boys (as well as girls in the sixth form, since September 1997). The school was founded in 1862 and is located in Handsworth, Birmingham, England. it is situated just off the A41, near the junction with the A4040. Handsworth Grammar School is sometimes abbreviated as HGS.
In the sixteenth century in Handsworth there were eight bridges crossing the River Tame. Three were wooden footbridges and five were wooden carriage bridges. These bridges were Church Bridge, Grove Lane Footbridge, Oscott Bridge, Paper Mill Footbridge, Rector’s Meadow Bridge, Barr Brook Bridge, Perry Barr and Hamstead Hill Bridge. John Hogetts, who owned “The Grove” in Grove Lane, decided that income from 50 acres of land he owned should be used to maintain and repair the bridges in the parish. Any excess money was to be used for charitable purposes within the parish of Handsworth. Thus the Bridge Trust was set up in 1612.
