Jalisco (Spanish pronunciation: [xaˈlisko]), officially Free and Sovereign State of Jalisco (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Jalisco), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is located in Western Mexico and divided in 125 municipalities and its capital city is Guadalajara. It is one of the more important states in Mexico because of its natural resources as well as its history. Many of the characteristic traits of Mexican culture, particularly outside Mexico, are originally from Jalisco, such as mariachi, ranchera music, tequila, jaripeo, etc. Economically, it is ranked third in the country, with industries centered in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, the second largest metropolitan area in Mexico. The state is home to two significant indigenous populations, the Huichols and the Nahuas. There is also a significant foreign population, mostly retirees from the United States and Canada, living in the Lake Chapala and Puerto Vallarta areas.

Amalia Hernández Navarro (b. Mexico City, September 1 1917 - d. November 5, 2000) was a Mexican ballet choreographer and founder of the world-renowned Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.

Hernández was born as daughter of the military officer and politician Lamberto Hernández and his wife Amalia Navarro. She was a pioneer in developing Baile Folklorico. Hernández was inspired by the way the children played and wanted to express her feelings and emotions that she had through dancing. In 1952, Hernández founded the Mexican Folkloric Ballet with only 8 dancers. By 1959 the ensemble grew to 50 performers. It was commissioned to represent Mexico at the Pan American Games in Chicago, Illinois in 1959.

Since 1960, Hernández has created over 60 choreographies and her famous ballet has performed uninterruptedly Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City.

Additionally, she founded the Folkloric Ballet School, in Mexico City, which was designed by her brother, architect Agustín Hernández in 1968.

Jorge Alberto Negrete Moreno (November 30, 1911 - December 5, 1953) is considered one of the most popular Mexican singers and actors of all time.

Negrete was born in Guanajuato where he was raised together with his brother and three sisters: David, Consuelo, Emilia and Teresa, and also lived in San Luis Potosí. He graduated with the rank of sub-lieutenant from El Colegio Militar, Mexico's military academy.

Handsome, with a very strong will and a trained, fascinating voice, he is still a top icon in Mexico, Spain and Latin America, more than 50 years after his death. His recording of "México Lindo y Querido" ("Beautiful and Beloved México"), his country's unofficial anthem, is the best known recording of the song. His career is often compared to that of Pedro Infante, the most popular Mexican actor of the time. The public rivalry didn't carry over to their private lives, as they were close friends until Negrete's death.

He married twice, to famous actresses with whom he shared credits: Elisa Christy (with whom he had a daughter, Diana Negrete) and María Félix. He also lived with his frequent co-star, for more than ten years. Gloria Marín co-starred in 10 out of his 44 films.
