This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Exploring the universality of music through the naturally--occurring harmonic series. This talk refers to a Bobby Mcferrin demonstration called "Watch me play the audience". As a performer of classical music, I frequently meet members of my audience who invariably like to share their impressions of the program they just heard. Very often, they will admit to having had difficulty with a certain work on the program, and with predictable regularity, they describe that work as being “dissonant.” By examining the naturally occurring phenomenon known as the harmonic series, this talk takes a closer look at this troubled and troubling “dissonance.” What exactly is it? Why do we react to it in the way that we do? When did it sneak its way into our music, and why are composers so intent on using it over and over? Assaff Weisman has been captivating audiences with his intensity, lyricism, and communicative style since his solo debut at the age of 12. The Greenville News observed “this piano virtuoso has facile fingers that toss off daredevil passages with ease and a mind for music that is as nimble as his fingers.” Weisman’s performances have taken him to some of the major venues in Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, including appearances at the Rudolfinum in Prague, Beethovenhalle in Bonn, Philips Hall in The Hague, the Millennium Piano Festival in Spain as well as in Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K. As first prize winner in the 2006 Iowa International Piano Competition, he has appeared as soloist with the Sioux City Symphony, American Chamber Orchestra, Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, and Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra as well as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional of Peru. An avid chamber musician, Weisman has collaborated with Isidore Cohen, Michael Tree, and Peter Wiley among others, and has taken part in the Aspen Music Festival, Campos do Jordão (Brazil), Lima Chamber Music Festival (Peru), The Music Festival of the Hamptons, and Verbier (Switzerland). He is a founding member and the executive director of the award-winning Israeli Chamber Project. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It criticizes those who broke their word (verse 3) and those who argued against the faith (verses 7–8). Moses and Jesus are cited as examples of prophets whose communities were divided: the rebellious were left to stray and the faithful granted success (verses 5–6, 14). The rewards of those who strive in God’s cause are described in some detail (verses 11–13).

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News At his compound on the outskirts of Port of Spain, the man responsible for the only attempted militant Islamic overthrow of a Western government is smiling. "I've been charged with treason, I've been charged with sedition, with murder, conspiracy to murder, [stockpiling] guns...." Abu Bakr, the fiery 73-year-old leader of Jamaat al Muslimeen, rattles off the many accusations that the government of Trinidad and Tobago has leveled against him. "Nothing has stuck, because it's fabricated," he continues. "They list all the charges in a book, and they just throw the book at me.... That's not prosecution, that's persecution!" Bakr has mellowed a bit in his old age, but he still relishes the opportunity to serve as a thorn in the side of the government with whom he has clashed for decades. Depending on which local you ask, "The Jamaat" is either a jihadi group, a vast criminal organization, an invaluable community resource providing jobs and social services to Trinidad's disadvantaged, or a combination of all three. But everyone agrees that the coup that Bakr led in 1990 — which held the state hostage for six days, unleashed widespread looting and chaos, and resulted in 24 deaths and the shooting of the prime minister — changed the country forever. For updates, follow on Twitter: @MweneGatete The Independent: The leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) has made his first official public appearance, ordering Muslims to obey him after declaring himself the head of an Islamic caliphate. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was seen leading prayers at the Grand Mosque in Mosul in the video, believed to have been taken on Friday 4th July 2014. The elusive leader has previously been pictured in few photographs and was thought to have gone into hiding. According to AFP, he told worshippers at the mosque: "I am the wali (leader) who presides over you, though I am not the best of you, so if you see that I am right, assist me. "If you see that I am wrong, advise me and put me on the right track, and obey me as long as I obey God in you." The mosque was packed with men of all ages - some in traditional dress, some wearing football shirts and tracksuit bottoms. Mosul, one of Iraq's largest cities, has been under Isis control since June and the terrorist group now controls an area larger than Great Britain, straddling Iraq and Syria. Isis wants to be known just as the "Islamic State" and claims Baghdadi as the only legitimate successor to the Prophet Mohammed. He became head of al-Qa'ida in Iraq in 2010 after its former leaders were killed in an attack by US and Iraqi troops and is believed to be well-educated, with degrees in Islamic Studies. The Iraqi army has failed to slow the advance of Isis from northern Iraq, prompting the Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, to shake up the security forces. The chief of the army's ground forces and head of the federal police were removed from their posts on Saturday but no replacements have been named. Iraqi soldiers in the city of Mosul and across much of the country's north melted away in the face of the Isis, leaving Shia volunteers to attempt to defend their towns. The Prime Minister has already retired several senior army figures and vowed to bring the full weight of military law, including the execution of deserters, on anyone found to have fled battles. Isis extremists have destroyed at least 10 ancient shrines and Shia mosques in territory they have seized in northern Iraq, according images posted online and witnesses. The death toll of the group's bloody campaign cannot be counted but atrocities including summary killings, beheadings, crucifixions and massacres have been reported. The movement ascribes violently to Sunni Islam and considers Shias heretics, and the veneration of saints apostasy.
BBC Newsnight's Secunder Kermani looks at the rise of the group and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The rapid advance across Iraq of militant fighters from the Islamic State has thrown the country into chaos and led to US air strikes against their key positions. Fighters from the group, which was formed in April 2013 under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), have made substantial gains in northern Iraq in recent months, forcing tens of thousands of people from religious minorities to flee their homes. noodls 2015-03-03Abu Bakr (Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafa) (Arabic: عبد الله بن أبي قحافة, Transliteration: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Quḥāfah, c. 573 CE - 634 CE) also known as Abū Bakr as-Șiddīq (Arabic: أبو بكر الصديق) was a senior companion (Sahabi) and the father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He ruled over the Rashidun Caliphate from 632–634 CE when he became the first Muslim Caliph following Muhammad's death. As Caliph, Abu Bakr succeeded to the political and administrative functions previously exercised by Muhammad, since the religious function and authority of prophethood ended with Muhammad's death according to Islam. He was called Al-Siddiq (The Truthful) and was known by that title among later generations of Muslims.
As a young man, Abu Bakr became a cloth merchant and he traveled extensively in Arabia and neighboring lands in the Middle East, through which he gained both wealth and experience. He eventually came to be recognized as the chief of his clan. On his return from a business trip to Yemen, he was informed that in his absence Muhammad had openly declared his prophethood. Not long after, Abu Bakr accepted Islam and was the first person outside the family of Muhammad to openly become a Muslim. He was instrumental in the conversion of many people to the Islamic faith and early in 623, Abu Bakr's daughter Aisha was married to Muhammad, strengthening the ties between the two men.
