Qena (Arabic: قنا Qinā, Egyptian Arabic: [ˈʔenæ], locally: [ˈɡena]) is a city in Upper Egypt, and the capital of the Qena Governorate. Situated on the east bank of the Nile, it was known as Kaine during the Greco-Roman period and as Cainepolis in antiquity.
This provincial capital is located about 57 miles from El Balyana and 39 miles north of Luxor. It is most famous for its proximity to the ruins of Dendara. It owes its modern prosperity to the opening of the Wadi Qena towards the Red Sea, which is a major traffic route between Upper Egypt and the Red Sea. Tourists traveling between Luxor and the Red Sea will assuredly pass through this city since there is only one good road connection. Qena is noted for its pottery, in particular the porous water.
In addition to its Ancient Egyptian heritage as the city of Cainepolis. Qena has a considerable Islamic heritage and a famous mosque. The Maghrebi Abd el-Rahim settled in Qena upon his return from Mecca and founded a Sufi center here. Upon his death in 1195, the mosque was built above his tomb and became a place of pilgrimage. There is a huge modern mosque of Sheikh el-Qenawi in the main square which attests to his importance.

Luxor mit seinem Tempel, Theben West mit den Memnon-Kolossen, dem Hatschepsut-Tempel und dem Tal der Könige, der Begräbnisstätte der Pharaonen, Theben-Ost (Karnak) auf 250.000 qm und mit der Sphingenallee: hier war das Herz des antiken Ägyptens.
Am 1. Mai 2014 trafen wir in Luxor ein und konnten den Tempel besichtigen. Den zweiten Obelisken hatte Sultan Mohammed Ali 1836 bekanntlich an den französischen König Louis-Philippe „verschenkt“ (im Tausch gegen eine Turmuhr für die Alabastermoschee in Kairo), der ihn auf dem Pariser Place de la Concorde placierte.
Abends auf dem Schiff hatten wir das Vergnügen, dem Bauchtanz einer wahren Perle des Orients zuzuschauen … .
Anderntags fuhren wir nach Theben-West und hatten in der Nekropole ein charmantes und wirklich interessantes Treffen u. a. mit dem Großmufti besagter Alabastermoschee in Kairo, mit dem ägyptischen Tourismusminister und mit dem Gouverneur von Luxor. Diese Persönlichkeiten waren sehr besorgt, weil viele Reisende wegen der jüngsten Querelen einen Bogen um Ägypten machen. Dabei tun die Behörden eine ganze Menge, um die Touristen sicher zu geleiten. Ob wir wollten oder nicht, wir hatten immer bewaffnete Polizisten in den Bussen, an Bord und auch in separaten Begleitbooten, wie man auf den Videos öfter sehen kann.
In der Nekropole und in den Grabstätten durfte nicht gefilmt werden, daher habe ich einige Fotos der örtlichen Presse entnommen, die mir Phoenix zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Auch die Bilder von dem Treffen mit den Politikern entstammen dieser Quelle.

Luxor mit seinem Tempel, Theben West mit den Memnon-Kolossen, dem Hatschepsut-Tempel und dem Tal der Könige, der Begräbnisstätte der Pharaonen, Theben-Ost (Karnak) auf 250.000 qm und mit der Sphingenallee: hier war das Herz des antiken Ägyptens. Am 1. Mai 2014 trafen wir in Luxor ein und konnten den Tempel besichtigen. Den zweiten Obelisken hatte Sultan Mohammed Ali 1836 bekanntlich an den französischen König Louis-Philippe „verschenkt“ (im Tausch gegen eine Turmuhr für die Alabastermoschee in Kairo), der ihn auf dem Pariser Place de la Concorde placierte. Abends auf dem Schiff hatten wir das Vergnügen, dem Bauchtanz einer wahren Perle des Orients zuzuschauen … . Anderntags fuhren wir nach Theben-West und hatten in der Nekropole ein charmantes und wirklich interessantes Treffen u. a. mit dem Großmufti besagter Alabastermoschee in Kairo, mit dem ägyptischen Tourismusminister und mit dem Gouverneur von Luxor. Diese Persönlichkeiten waren sehr besorgt, weil viele Reisende wegen der jüngsten Querelen einen Bogen um Ägypten machen. Dabei tun die Behörden eine ganze Menge, um die Touristen sicher zu geleiten. Ob wir wollten oder nicht, wir hatten immer bewaffnete Polizisten in den Bussen, an Bord und auch in separaten Begleitbooten, wie man auf den Videos öfter sehen kann. In der Nekropole und in den Grabstätten durfte nicht gefilmt werden, daher habe ich einige Fotos der örtlichen Presse entnommen, die mir Phoenix zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Tourism is limping back to normalcy with renewed vigour ... About 12.5 per cent of Egyptian labour force in 2010 worked in the tourism sector ... Luxor, Aswan and Qena governorates are heavily dependent on tourism as a source of income, and they were hit hard by the economic recession that left occupancy rates at one per cent in almost all of their hotels ...
