Everything you need to know about finding a Balustrading Professional

A balustrade is simply a row of repeating balusters.  Balusters are small posts that support the upper rail of a railing.  Commonly, balustrades are seen on staircases, but they can also be used to define porches, entrance ways, verandahs, decks, and balconies.  They can also be used in fencing and for privacy screens.

Types of Balustrading

There are several different materials that can be used for balustrading.  Following is a list of some of the different materials that can be used:

  • Welded aluminium – is great for balconies, stairs and fencing.  These balustrades are usually powder-coated and are available in a wide range of colours.
  • Stainless steel – is rust free and complements a wide range of materials that are used in building.  It can be used in just about any application.
  • Glass – in balustrades, glass can range from framed to completely frameless.  Toughened glass is used for safety.
  • Wrought aluminium – coming in a variety of designs such as twists, scrolls and rings, these balustrades can be fully customized or you can opt for a pre-existing pattern.  It is rust free and cost effective, making it a good alternative to wrought iron.
  • Lace balustrading – is made from cast aluminium panels to a pre-determined design.

Hiring a Balustrading Professional

Balustrading professionals are able to create custom designs to perfectly suit your home.  Companies should be willing to provide you with a free measure and quote, as well as provide full installation when the balustrading is ready.  If possible, it is a good idea to ask to see examples of previous work, especially if you are getting a custom design.

How Much Does Balustrading Cost?

Balustrading is typically costed on a per meter basis installed, so the size of your staircase or balcony will give a supplier some idea of a final price. The material used is another major factor, with timber at the lower end of the cost scale and glass and metals toward the upper end.  A small staircase with a timber baluster may only cost in the thousands of dollars or less, with larger projects using more expensive materials escalating considerably into tens of thousands of dollars.
