Aung San Suu Kyi Nobel Peace Prize Speech.
Aung san, Burma. Patriot.
http://www.euronews.com/ Aung San Suu Kyi has made a trip that for years she could only dream of. The opposition leader of Myanmar - formerly Burma - has held private talks with US President Barack Obama in the Oval Office of the White House. The meeting came after she earlier took possession of the highest Congressional Award - a gold medal she was awarded in absentia in 2008 while under house arrest in Burma. The ceremony in Washington came as the US announced that it was relaxing some sanctions. "This is one of the most moving days of my life." she told supporters, "I stand here now strong in the knowledge that I am among friends who will be with us as we continue with our task of building a nation that offers peace and prosperity and basic human rights protected by the rule of law to all who dwell within its realms." Aung San Suu Kyi was released in 2010 after 17 years under house arrest as part of Burma's plans for a transition to democracy. The Obama administration initially continued longstanding American reticence in dealing with Burma after taking over in January 2009, preferring to prioritize broader security threats like Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Susan E. Rice, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, called the junta government's hold over Myanmar, known in the West as Burma, "one of the most intractable challenges for the global community". Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed that the Obama administration was "looking at what steps we might take that might influence the current Burmese government and...looking for ways that we could more effectively help the Burmese people", though she echoed Rice's pessimism in noting the junta's historical isolationism and disregard for economic sanctions. At the urging of Aung San Suu Kyi and the US's East Asian partners, the US held the first formal meetings with the junta in late in 2009. In November 2011, Obama spoke with Aung San Suu Kyi on the phone where they agreed to a visit by Secretary of State Clinton to Burma. Obama met with Burmese President Thein Sein at the Sixth East Asia Summit. Clinton made a two-day visit from December 1, 2011. Barack Obama visited Burma on November 18, 2012, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to do so. Obama also visited Aung San Suu Kyi in her home. Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC (born 19 June 1945) is a Burmese opposition politician and chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59% of the national votes and 81% (392 of 485) of the seats in Parliament. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her most recent release on 13 November 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. Suu Kyi received the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the government of India and the International Simón Bolívar Prize from the government of Venezuela. In 2007, the Government of Canada made her an honorary citizen of that country; at the time, she was one of only four people ever to receive the honour. In 2011, she was awarded the Wallenberg Medal. On 19 September 2012, Aung San Suu Kyi was also presented with the Congressional Gold Medal, which is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States. On 1 April 2012, her party, the National League for Democracy, announced that she was elected to the Pyithu Hluttaw, the lower house of the Burmese parliament, representing the constituency of Kawhmu; her party also won 43 of the 45 vacant seats in the lower house. The election results were confirmed by the official electoral commission the following day. Suu Kyi is the third child and only daughter of Aung San, considered to be the father of modern-day Burma. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_foreign_policy_of_the_Barack_Obama_administration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aung_San_Suu_Kyi

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Interview with CNN's Amanpour
Aung San Suu Kyi became a worldwide symbol of freedom and democracy after spending 15 years of her life under house arrest. Since her release in 2010, she has gone from dissident to politician, and has spearheaded the drive for legal and political reform in Myanmar as leader of opposition party, the National League for Democracy, and Chairperson of the Committee for the Rule of Law and Tranquillity. This IBA interview was conducted in Nay Pyi Taw, where Aung Sang Suu Kyi was hosting an IBAHRI workshop with the aim of promoting discussion on the need to reform current rules governing Myanmar’s legal profession. In the interview (Nov 2014) she discusses issues including the importance of the rule of law and the key challenges facing the legal profession in Myanmar. In June 2012, Aung San Suu Kyi came to Norway to accept the Nobel Prize that had been awarded to her twenty years earlier - she didn't want to leave her home country at the time prize because she feared the regime wouldn't let her back in afterwards. When Aung San Suu Kyi visited Oslo in 2012, she gave a short interview to Ole Torp from Norwegian public broadcaster NRK. The exchange was broadcast a few hours after Aung San Suu Kyi had delivered her acceptance speech. I figured this is something I should upload - because I can't be uploading meaningless entertainment *all* the time, because this lady is talking sense and because she shows how even politicians can be polite. And perhaps because she's the cutest political rebel in living memory. ;-)
Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi told Voice of America Tuesday that communal tensions involving the country's minority Muslim population will be "difficult to dissipate in a short period of time." "Human rights must be protected by the rule of law and there can never be occasions where human rights can be neglected or ignored," the Nobel Peace Prize winner said.
Aung San Suu Kyi Talk About Her Future Plan With BBC, Before Her Deliver Nobel Lecture At Oslo Norway.
In her first-ever TV interview after being released from seven years of house arrest, the leader of Burma's democracy movement and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize for Peace, AUNG SAN SUU KYI, lays out her experiences as she endured years of being imprisoned in her own home. In this BBC Exclusive interview, Suu Kyi shares with BBC reporter John Simpson her aspirations for her people as she takes up the mantle of democratic struggle once again - doing so at great personal cost; as her husband, British academic Michael Aris, was repeatedly denied a visa to Burma by the military regime and was dying of cancer in 1999, she had to heartbreakingly choose to stay in Burma instead, fearing that is she left the country, she would not be allowed back. Just a few weeks after her release, she has finally seen her younger son, Kim Aris, for the first time in more than a decade; she has never met one of two grandchildren. Enduring imprisonment - whether in jail or in her crumbling villa in Central Rangoon for fifteen of the past twenty years, surviving at least one assassination attempt, perseverance in the midst of ever-increasing intimidation by the military rulers and her great personal sacrifices - all this, Aung San Suu Kyi did in the name of democracy. "Fearlessness may be a gift but perhaps more precious is the courage acquired through endeavour, courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one's actions, courage that could be described as 'grace under pressure' - grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure." If you want to bring an end to long-standing conflict, you have to be prepared to compromise. (Aung San Suu Kyi) We have the ability to achieve, if we master the necessary goodwill, a common global society blessed with a shared culture of peace that is nourished by the ethnic, national and local diversities that enrich our lives. (Mahnaz Afkhami) Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity. Since Mr. Obama's visit last year, it is not hard to see the huge changes in Yangon, Myanmar - smart phones with fast data plan, cinemas, paintings & books of Aung San Suu Kyi, construction sites of tall buildings. People have more freedom of speech, social participations and chances to connect the world, while contrasting interestingly with the old tenement houses, the colonial architecture, the antique steam train, the ancient pagoda and the traditional Myanmar street food. The short film documents the most recent scenes in Yangon and questions what is the future of Myanmar. Producer & Director: Kenrick Wong Special Thanks: Eric Yee, Neville Huen, Ingrid Lau Music: Gustavo Santaolalla - Main Theme (The Last Of Us Soundtrack)

The Charlotte Observer 2015-04-20Bogyoke (General) Aung San (Burmese: အောင်ဆန်း; MLCTS: buil hkyup aung hcan:, pronounced: [bòdʑoʊʔ àʊɴ sʰáɴ]); 13 February 1915 – 19 July 1947) was a Burmese revolutionary, nationalist, and founder of the modern Burmese army (Tatmadaw), and considered to be the Father of (modern-day) Burma.
He was a founder of the Communist Party of Burma and was instrumental in bringing about Burma's independence from British colonial rule in Burma, but was assassinated six months before independence. He is recognized as the leading architect of independence, and the founder of the Union of Burma. Affectionately known as "Bogyoke" (General), Aung San is still widely admired by the Burmese people, and his name is still invoked in Burmese politics to this day.
Aung San had a daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, who is a recipient of a Nobel Peace an a Burmese politician.
Aung San was born to U Pha, a lawyer, and his wife Daw Suu in Natmauk, Magway District, in central Burma on 13 February 1915. His family was already well known in the Burmese resistance movement; his great uncle Bo Min Yaung fought against the British annexation of Burma in 1886.
Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC (Burmese: ; MLCTS: aung hcan: cu. krany, IPA: [ʔàʊɴ sʰáɴ sṵ tɕì]; born 19 June 1945) is a Burmese opposition politician and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59% of the national votes and 81% (392 of 485) of the seats in Parliament. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her most recent release on 13 November 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent (now former) political prisoners.
In 2007, the Government of Canada made her an honorary citizen of that country; at the time, she was one of only four people ever to receive the honor. In 2011, she was awarded the Wallenberg Medal.
Barack Hussein Obama II (i/bəˈrɑːk huːˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the 44th and current President of the United States. He is the first African American to hold the office. In January 2005, Obama was sworn in as a U.S. Senator in the state of Illinois. He would hold this office until November 2008, when he resigned following his victory in the 2008 presidential election.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
Following an unsuccessful bid against the Democratic incumbent for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for the United States Senate in 2004. Several events brought him to national attention during the campaign, including his victory in the March 2004 Illinois Democratic primary for the Senate election and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He won election to the U.S. Senate in Illinois in November 2004. His presidential campaign began in February 2007, and after a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Rodham Clinton, he won his party's nomination. In the 2008 presidential election, he defeated Republican nominee John McCain, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months later, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In April 2011, he announced that he would be running for re-election in 2012.
