President Obama Selma Full Speech Selma 50 years Later President Barack Obama joined nearly 100 members of Congress in Selma, Alabama, on Saturday for the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday -- a watershed moment of the civil rights movement -- where he honored the men and women who stood their ground in a violent confrontation with police at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. We gather here to honor the courage of ordinary Americans willing to endure billy clubs and the chastening rod, tear gas and the trampling hoof; men and women who despite the gush of blood and splintered bone would stay true to their North Star and keep marching toward justice, Obama said in a soaring speech that addressed race and civil rights.Obama, at Selma Memorial, Says, ‘We Know the March Is Not Over Yet’ The president hailed Selma as a city of extreme importance to America's history -- on par with wartime settings of Concord, Lexington and Gettysburg, and places where innovation took great strides such as Kitty Hawk and Cape Canaveral. And he paid deference to the foot soldiers who sparked a movement: Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Joseph Lowery, Hosea Williams, Amelia Boynton, Diane Nash, Ralph Abernathy, C.T. Vivian, Andrew Young and Fred Shuttlesworth, among others. What they did here will reverberate through the ages, Obama said. Not because the change they won was preordained, not because their victory was complete, but because they proved that nonviolent change is possible; that love and hope can conquer hate. In attendance for the event were Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., and Lewis, who rallied alongside the civil rights leader and still bears visible scars from his involvement in the marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Joining them at the famed bridge were thousands of citizens, civil rights activists and politicians, including former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. Obama invoked a scathing Department of Justice report on the city of Ferguson, Missouri, which detailed gross misconduct against its citizens, to reject the notion that racism was no longer an issue in America. We don’t need the Ferguson report to know that’s not true, he said. We just need to open our eyes, and ears, and hearts, to know that this nation’s racial history still casts its long shadow upon us. We know the march is not yet over, the race is not yet won, and that reaching that blessed destination where we are judged by the content of our character -- requires admitting as much. But he noted that race relations in the country had come a long way since Selma, pointing to major progress in gender and marriage equality. What happened in Ferguson may not be unique, but it’s no longer endemic, or sanctioned by law and custom; and before the civil rights movement, it most surely was, he said. Obama also took direct aim at Congress for failing to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, one of the major achievements of the civil rights movement that arguably owes its existence to the confrontation in Selma. Republicans on the Hill stand broadly opposed to renewing the law, with no signs of bringing it up for a vote. How can that be? Obama asked. The Voting Rights Act was one of the crowning achievements of our democracy, the result of Republican and Democratic effort. President Reagan signed its renewal when he was in office. President Bush signed its renewal when he was in office. One hundred Members of Congress have come here today to honor people who were willing to die for the right it protects. If we want to honor this day, let these hundred go back to Washington, and gather four hundred more, and together, pledge to make it their mission to restore the law this year. Obama closed by urging young Americans to learn from Lewis, whom the president called one of his heroes, by fearlessly taking up the march for progress.SELMA, Ala. — As a new generation struggles over race and power in America, President Obama and a host of political figures from both parties came here on Saturday, to the site of one of the most searing days of the civil rights era, to reflect on how far the country has come and how far it still has to go. Fifty years after peaceful protesters trying to cross a bridge were beaten by police officers with billy clubs, shocking the nation and leading to passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, the nation’s first African-American president led a bipartisan, multiracial testimonial to the pioneers whose courage helped pave the way for his own election to the highest office of the land. You are America. Unconstrained by habits and convention. Unencumbered by what is, and ready to seize what ought to be, he said. For everywhere in this country, there are first steps

Brazil's Supreme Court has given prosecutors the go-ahead to investigate dozens of top politicians, including a former president and leaders of Congress, for alleged links to a kickback scheme at the state-run energy company. The inquiry will now focus on a former president, the leaders of the lower house and Senate and 51 other figures as federal prosecutors dig into political ties to the scheme that they say saw at least $800m in bribes and other funds paid by big construction and engineering firms in return for inflated contracts with the state energy company Petrobras. The investigation and any possible trials will take years to play out, but the action throws the second term of President Dilma Rousseff into further disarray as she faces dueling political and economic crises. She is not being investigated, although she was chairwoman of the Petrobras board for several years as the kickback scheme played out. Experts say the investigations could create further gridlock in Congress just as Brazil and its sputtering economy desperately need fiscal and political reform measures passed. But the investigation is widely viewed as a necessary evil for the nation's democracy to advance and shake off deep-rooted impunity for the rich and powerful. "You can't put this genie back in the bottle. People are going to have to face the consequences," said Paulo Sotero, director of the Brazil Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. "There used to be the idea that people in positions of power in Brazil were untouchable. They're no longer untouchable." During the first phase of the inquiry, investigators struck plea bargain deals with several "operators" who said they helped move the money around in the deals, along with former top Petrobras executives who admitted raking in hundreds of millions in bribes. That testimony paved the way for the opening of investigations into politicians who allegedly benefited from kickbacks. Under Brazilian law, the Supreme Court has to approve any investigation of lawmakers or top officials in the executive branch. Any criminal charges or trials of such figures must also must be approved and judged by the top court. Among those the court said would now be investigated are former president and current senator Fernando Collor, who was forced from the presidency by a corruption scandal in 1992 before making a political comeback in recent years. Also to be investigated are Senate leader Renan Calheiros and Eduardo Cunha, who heads the lower house. Both are members of the powerful Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, part of the governing coalition led by the Workers' Party. Both have already shown they are ready to create serious gridlock in Congress because of the investigation. Also on the investigation list are Rousseff's former chief of staff and current senator, Gleisi Hoffman; Rousseff's former Energy Minister Edison Lobao; and Antonio Palocci, who was finance minister under the previous president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and was Rousseff's first chief of staff.

Islamic State crisis: Iraqi army drives IS from key town Iraqi forces have pushed Islamic State (IS) fighters out of the western town of al-Baghdadi, the US military says. The town, which was taken over by IS last month, is about 8km (5 miles) from a base housing hundreds of US troops who are training Iraqi soldiers. Iraqi forces moved in after "precise and effective" air strikes by the US-led coalition, a statement said. Meanwhile, IS was widely condemned on Friday after it bulldozed the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in Iraq. IS began demolishing the site, which was founded in the 13th Century BC, on Thursday, according to Iraqi officials.

The murder of Boris Nemtsov that took place on a bridge in central Moscow overnight on Friday was caught on an all-weather camera belonging to TVC television. The low-resolution video hints that the killer may have been waiting for Nemtsov at the bridge.

The camera captured a wide shot of Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, near the Kremlin, where the crime took place. The quality of the footage is only good enough to distinguish the cars on the bridge and the figures of people moving along it.

Brazil\'s Supreme Court has given prosecutors the go-ahead to investigate dozens of top politicians, including a former president and leaders of Congress, for alleged links to a kickback scheme at the state-run energy company.

But the investigation is widely viewed as a necessary evil for the nation\'s democracy to advance and shake off deep-rooted impunity for the rich and powerful.
