In the UK we often have fixed ideas about victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, but in reality teenage girls are often most at risk of harm, yet the forgotten, invisible aspect. Isabel argues that our current approach to ending violence against women and girls is ineffective and expensive, instead promoting preventative Sex and Relationships Education nationally as a realistic and much needed solution. Isabel started her career by carrying out theatre projects with young offenders at Leeds University. Since then, she has accumulated experience in working with young people at risk of social exclusion, within schools and communities, facing multiple disadvantages. Isabel specialises in working with young women at risk of harm in their intimate relationships and exploitation from gangs. Isabel is a respected figure in terms of inequality, particularly around gender: she has addressed conferences and spoken multiple times at the Houses of Parliament. Isabel was recently named in the top ten of 24 Housing‘s Young Leaders competition. Isabel has won numerous awards for youth-led projects she coordinates in London and won a young journalist award for her work on gang-related violence and exploitation of girls in the UK. Universal credit changes 'raise domestic abuse fears'

The government's flagship welfare scheme could leave women vulnerable to domestic abuse, a parliamentary watchdog says. The Joint Committee on Human Rights said the universal credit benefit could expose women to abuse that sees men limit their partners' access to money. The benefit is paid to couples through a joint account, with other options for those concerned about access. The government said it was committed to supporting those affected by abuse. Universal credit, which began being rolled out nationally on Monday, combines six working-age benefits, including JSA, tax credits and housing benefit, into one payment. Concerns The committee said it shared fears raised by women's groups that the system would "reduce the financial autonomy of women" and could leave domestic violence victims vulnerable to further abuse. A new domestic abuse offence of "coercive and controlling behaviour"', which can include the abuser preventing their victim from having access to money, was announced by the Home Office last year. In its report, the cross-party group of MPs and peers recommended the government reviewed the payment of universal credit to couples. They suggested that the government should test different payment methods, "such as automatic split payment to each partner in varying proportions - so as to assess which best protects the financial autonomy of women in couples - thereby strengthening their position should domestic violence occur". The committee also recommended that relevant officials were given domestic abuse training. Dr Hywel Francis MP, committee chairman, said: "Barely a week goes by without a news story regarding domestic violence, rape, sexual abuse or some form of violence against women. "We commend the government for the commitment it has shown to tackling these crimes but emphasise that the work to prevent these crimes must not let up." A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said there were domestic abuse experts in Jobcentres. "With universal credit, we are improving protections by giving people extra time to focus on getting their families back on track before encouraging them to look for work," he said.

Illinois Imam Charged With Sex Abuse at Islamic School

A Chicago-area imam who many considered a respected Islamic scholar now faces charges of committing sexual abuse at a school he ran for more than 40 years. Mohammad Abdullah Saleem, 75, who founded the Institute of Islamic Education in Elgin, Illinois, a city about 35 miles northwest of Chicago, is charged with felony criminal sexual abuse of a school employee and four students. Garrett Tenney reported on "Happening Now" that the allegations span four decades and have shaken the Muslim community. Saleem has been released on $250,000 bail. The imam's lawyer says he hasn't seen anything to substantiate the allegations. "The boarding school is coming under fire itself for not protecting students, including a man who claims he was sexually assaulted by a male staff member when he was a student there," Tenney reported. So far, the five victims have filed a civil lawsuit against the school and Saleem, Tenney said, adding that police are investigating each of the cases and additional criminal charges could be filed. "Community leaders, though, are expecting more victims to come forward, as thousands of children have attended the school over the last 30 years," Tenney said. MyFoxChicago reported: Defense attorney Thomas Glasgow said he talked to his client about the Elgin charges and that Saleem "categorically denies the allegations." He hadn't had a chance to speak to him about the lawsuit. No one answered the phone Tuesday at the school, which has students from grades six through 12 and is 25 miles northwest of Chicago. Saleem, of Gilberts, was arrested Sunday, Elgin police said. Authorities started investigating after the woman contacted them in December. During a Tuesday bond hearing, prosecutors alleged that a month after the woman started working at the school in 2012, Saleem started removing the religious veil from her face and came into her office to hug her. Over several months, prosecutors said, he would hug her and squeeze her buttocks and breasts over her clothes. Last April, prosecutors say Saleem locked the door of the woman's office, lifted her dress, forced her to sit on top of him, massaged her and held her down when she tried to get up. Prosecutors say they collected evidence. The lawsuit says that when one female student told a teacher Saleem touched her inappropriately, she was told, "Saleem is an old man and old people do things like that - so just forget it." Saleem's bond was set at $250,000 and he was ordered to have no contact with the accuser, her family or anyone under age 18. Glasgow said he expected Saleem to post bond later Tuesday. Saleem, who also had to surrender his passport, is due in court again March 10.
