JC’s Road Trip - Pai, Thailand - Part 1

Pai (pronounced more like the English 'bye', not 'pie') is a small town in northern Thailand's Mae Hong Son Province, near the Myanmar border, about 50 miles/80 km north of Chiang Mai on the way to Mae Hong Son. The town lies along the banks of the Pai River. Pai was once a quiet market village inhabited by the ethnic Shan people whose culture is influenced greatly by the country of Burma or Myanmar as it is known nowadays. Present day Pai primarily thrives on tourism dollars. Spend enough time in northern Thailand and eventually you'll hear the comparisons between Pai and Bangkok's Khao San Road. That used to be the case but in recent years this small town has started to resemble something of a Thai island getaway but without the palm trees and sand. However, unlike Khao San Road, Pai is just as popular among Thais as foreigners because of exposure in a Thai movie called Pai In Love. During the cool winter season many Thais from around Thailand crowd into this small northern town. Traffic slows to a crawl during this time of year, and accommodations fill up quickly and many even opt to sleep in tents. Luckily many quiet accommodations outside the center of town are available year round. Lots of natural, laid back activities keep visitors to Pai entertained. Pai even has an art and music scene. Well I am off to find out. We will see what the upsides and downsides are to living in a smaller Thai town in the Central area of Thailand are. Here is a little intro about Suphan Buri and its history and some things that have put Suphan Buri on my radar screen as a place to retire to. So join with me as we dig in and explore what Suphan Buri has to offer!. Suphan Buri is one of the central provinces of Thailand. The word Suphan originates from the Sanskrit word Suvarna meaning gold, and the word buri from Sanskrit Purī meaning town or city. Hence the name of the province literally means City of Gold. The terrain of the province is mostly low river plains, with small mountain ranges in the north and the west of the province. The southeastern part with the very low plain of the Tha Chin River is paddy rice farming area. A long time ago Suphan Buri was called U Thong, and was the home city of Prince U Thong, the founder of the Ayutthaya kingdom. King Khun Luang Pha Ngua finally gave it the current name. Suphan Buri was an important border city, and also the location of several battles with the neighboring Burmese. There are many temples and shrines, museums and historical sites located around Suphan Buri. Mainly known as a transit town taking travelers to and from Ko Tao or west towards Ranong or Phuket, While there’s not a lot to do in Chumphon while you wait for your ferry, there are things to do and see around Chumphon and in town. The surrounding beaches are great places to get off the beaten path. Hat Thung Wua Laen (15km north of town) is an excellent beach with plenty of traveler amenities. As a transit hub, Chumphon is is a jump poff point. But note the main bus station and piers for boats to Ko Tao, Ko Samui and Ko Pha-Ngan are some distance from town. Some facts: Transport Air Chumphon Airport is 30 km north of Chumphon City. Flights from Bangkok are around 60 minutes. Snorkeling and diving can be found around the 44 islands. Because this time I am headed to a region I have never visited, Isaan. Let's head off to a small town called Nong Khai. What does it cost and what is it like to live in Nong Khai? Can a category 1 RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) live well and be happy there? Let's find out about transportation, costs of some food, getting your laundry done and some lodging options in Nong Khai. So put on your traveling shoes and let's jump in the RIPper mobile and let's see what Nong Khai has to offer! Isaan is bordered by Laos and Cambodia on three sides. This scorching-hot area of northeast Thailand is known as Isaan. It comprises a third of the country's land area and is home to nearly a third of its population. This is the poorest region of the kingdom of Thailand, and it is also the least-visited. Farming is the traditional way of life in Isaan At the eastern end of this upper part of Thailand, is the border town of Nong Khai which is surrounded by wonderfully ornate temples, some of which are used by the large population of Vietnamese and Chinese migrants. Nong Khai is a bustling Thai town and the main gateway to Laos and Vientiane positioned along the Mekong River. Nong Khai exhibits the well known Isaan Culture which is very different from the culture of the central, northern and southern regions of Thailand. Isaan is known for its warmth, friendliness and kindness. The Isaan dialect has been drawn from both Thai and Lao roots. These days the distinctive Isaan culture has tremendous pride to those who are born into this region. Most indigenous people here speak both Thai and the local dialect called Isaan. JC’s Day Trip Revisiting 90 km Samoeng Loop, Thailand

You can take your own bike or rent a bike and experience the 90km trip that takes you through excellent mountain views, waterfalls, beautiful gardens, adventure activities, elephant camps, orchid and butterfly farms and places to eat. Getting away from Chiang Mai’s hectic, polluted and slightly dangerous driving conditions is great. Traffic slows to a trickle as the scenery changes from businesses into the lush foothills and eventually deep into the mountainous North Country. This is a gorgeous journey, especially for motorcyclists. Conditions on the countryside roads are surprisingly good. There are thousands of kilometers of paved and good dirt roads crisscrossing the mountains between Chiang Mai and the Burmese border. You could sleep in guesthouses or camp and have weeks of exploration, giving you an excellent chance to interact with the Thai locals. But for people who do not have the time to do that, the Samoeng Loop is a great option. Follow along with me for the day and enjoy our journey together! Along the way I will give you some tips for making sure you are a happy RIPper (Retiree In Paradise), show you some cool and fun things to do, places to consider living and a few surprises as well. So come along while we hit the road and explore Thailand. This time we are around Suphanburi which is about 100kms from Bangkok. Suphanburi, sometimes written Suphan Buri, is a town in central Thailand. Suphanburi lies on the Tha Chin River (known locally as the Suphan River), at an elevation of 11 metres (36 ft). The surrounding area is low-lying and flat, with rice farms covering much of the land. Suphanburi has a tropical climate. After January temperatures rise until April, which is very hot with the average daily maximum at 36.9 °C (98.4 °F). The monsoon season runs from May through October, with heavy rain and somewhat cooler temperatures during the day, although nights remain warm. Suphanburi is at the end of a 157 kilometers (98 mi) branch line of the State Railway of Thailand's southern line. Suphan Buri is an ancient town rich in natural and historical heritage. The province was once an important border town involving battles and important wars during the period of the Ayutthaya kingdom.
