Waterford (from Old Norse: Veðrafjǫrðr meaning "ram fjord" or "windy fjord"; Irish: Port Láirge, meaning "Lárag's port") is a city in the South-East Region of Ireland. It is the oldest city in the country and fifth largest by population. Waterford City Council is the local government authority for the city. The population of the city in 2011 was 51,519; of which 46,747 lived within the city limits, and 3,465 lived in the suburbs in County Kilkenny. Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853. It and all the other longphorts were vacated in 902, the Vikings having been driven out by the native Irish. The Vikings re-established themselves in Ireland at Waterford in 914, led at first by Ottir Iarla (Jarl Ottar) until 917, and after that by Ragnall ua Ímair and the Uí Ímair dynasty, and built what would be Ireland's first city. A list of the city's rulers from this date to the mayors of the present day can be found in Rulers of Waterford. Among the most prominent kings of Waterford was Ivar of Waterford.
Keith Patrick Barry (born 25 October 1976) is an Irish Mentalist, Hypnotist and Magician.
Born in Waterford city, Ireland, Barry's interest in magic began at the age of fourteen when he purchased a book entitled Magic for the Complete Klutz.
Barry's grandfather, 82, was attacked in his home in Waterford by burglars in 2009, later dying of his wounds. Barry and his father launched a high-profile campaign to stamp out abuse against the elderly in their homes, said the government was “insulting” the elderly and said he would “bring the country to a halt” Pundits referred to the incident in discussions of laws about the actions people can legally take to defend themselves in their homes.
Barry’s television career began with a series entitled Close Encounters with Keith Barry, which ran from 2003-2005. The show originally aired in Europe and has since aired in 28 countries worldwide.
In 2004, Barry performed in an MTV television special entitled Brainwashed. 2005 ended with Barry performing a live Christmas special in Europe. Keith Barry Live With Friends featured various celebrities such as magician Billy McComb, Jim Corr of The Corrs, and The Conway Sisters.
Dan Shanahan (born 4 January 1977 in Lismore, County Waterford) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Lismore and was a member of the Waterford senior inter-county team from 1998 until 2010. In recent seasons Shanahan has come to be regarded as one of the best players in the game being named undisputed Hurler of the Year in 2007. Dan is the older brother of Maurice Shanahan and cousin of Eoin Kelly (Waterford hurler) who are also members of the Waterford hurling panel.Dan usually played in the forwards.
Shanahan plays his club hurling with his local Lismore club in Waterford. He has enjoyed some success at underage levels winning county medals in hurling at under-14, under-16, minor and under-21 levels. Shanahan won a senior county title in 1993 at the age of sixteen. Lismore were in the county final in 2009 but narrowly lost in the replay.
In the mid-1990s Shanahan played hurling with the Waterford minor and under-21 teams, however, he had little success at these levels. He first played for Waterford in 1995, however, his senior championship debut for his native-county came in 1998. That year Waterford held All-Ireland champions Clare to a draw in the Munster final, however, the Decies lost the replay. Shanahan’s side later faced Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final, however, they were defeated by a single point. This was a bleak period for Waterford’s hurlers and the famine that had lasted since 1963 continued. All this changed in 2002 when Justin McCarthy took over as manager of the team. That year Waterford reached the Munster final again, however, Shanahan could not command a definite place on the starting fifteen. In spite of this he came on as a substitute in Waterford’s provincial final victory over reigning champions Tipperary. It was Shanahan’s first Munster title. Unfortunately, the men from the Deise were later defeated by Clare in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Looking at Waterford
In those old cabinets
Is there something more?
I recall several thing
A few vague feelings
I'm nothing more
Lately I've been trying to remember
All the things that got me here
And lately I've been looking to the past
To understand the memories I recall
I was young, with no sense
Bounded of insolence
The stairs and I fall down
Maybe with melodies
Electric and in TVs
I have something to learn from
Now it's all been said
These things in my head
It's not like their move
But there's songs that ain't true
They've take some time
These thoughts to unwind
But they're here now
And we're running enough
Lately I've been trying to remember
All the things that got me here
And lately I've been looking to the past
To understand the memories I recall
It's just to understand the places I belong
It's just to understand with whom I belong
It's just to understand the man that I've become
