The field was narrowed after the second event, with 10 of the 72 women failing to advance. This included three medical withdrawals. Joy Nguyen sprained her ankle on the hill, and Valerie MacKenzie had heat stroke and a mild concussion from falling on the pavement. Lee Knight broke her foot a few weeks before the Games but tried to compete anyway. The pain on the hill was too much, and she was forced to withdraw. Next up was the sandbag hill sprint, the event that would turn out to be the most painful despite its short duration. The task was simple: sprint roughly 170 meters uphill while carrying a 35 lb. sandbag. ...
This is the 15th installment of the Complete 2009 CrossFit Games videos, and the fourth part of the women’s competition. Here is complete coverage of the women’s row/sledge event. The hopper model tests an athlete’s ability to perform proficiently at random physical challenges. Along those lines, the fourth event required the women to drive a three-foot-long blunt stake into evenly packed ground with an 8-lb. sledgehammer. To complicate matters, the stake drive was bookended by 500-meter rows. Sarah Dunsmore proved quickest at the task, finishing in 5:33. Katie Hogan followed with 5:43, and Carey Kepler was right behind her at 5:50. In the first heat, Nicole Gordon smashed her finger between the handle and the stake.
