Athens, Greece: Ancient Acropolis and Agora
Crowned by the mighty Parthenon temple, the Acropolis rises above modern Athens; a lasting testament to Greece's glorious golden age. The Acropolis was the center of ritual and ceremony, and the religious heart of the city. The marketplace at its base is Agora, and was the hub of commercial, political and social life. The Acropolis - Athens 2013
If you are visiting Athens then the number 1 tourist attraction to see is the world famous Acropolis. Considering the history of the Acropolis with all the wars, earthquakes, pollution etc. it is amazing the place is still standing. Fortunately a lot of construction work is happening putting the Parthenon back together again. By David Goorney- published: 13 Nov 2013

Athens of Ancient Greece Documentary
Athens has been inhabited from Neolithic times, possibly from the end of the 4th millennium BC, or nearly 7,000 years.[10] By 1412 BC the settlement had become an important center of the Mycenaean civilization and the Acropolis was the site of a major Mycenaean fortress whose remains can be recognised from sections of the characteristic Cyclopean walls.[11] On the summit of the Acropolis, below the later Erechtheion, cuttings in the rock have been identified as the location of a Mycenaean palace.[11] Between 1250 and 1200 BC a staircase was built down a cleft in the rock to reach a protected water supply,[12] in a similar way to ones at Mycenae. Unlike other Mycenaean centers, such as Mycenae and Pylos (see Bronze Age collapse), we do not know whether Athens suffered destruction in about 1200 BC, an event often attributed to a Dorian invasion, and the Athenians always maintained that they were "pure" Ionians with no Dorian element. However, Athens, like many other Bronze Age settlements, went into economic decline for around 150 years following this. Iron Age burials, in the Kerameikos and other locations, are often richly provided for and demonstrate that from 900 BC onwards Athens was one of the leading centres of trade and prosperity in the region; as were Lefkandi in Euboea and Knossos in Crete.[13] This position may well have resulted from its central location in the Greek world, its secure stronghold on the Acropolis and its access to the sea, which gave it a natural advantage over inland rivals such as Thebes and Sparta. According to legend, Athens was formerly ruled by kings (see Kings of Athens), a situation which may have continued up until the 9th century BC. From later accounts, it is believed that these kings stood at the head of a land-owning aristocracy known as the Eupatridae (the 'well-born'), whose instrument of government was a Council which met on the Hill of Ares, called the Areopagus and appointed the chief city officials, the archons and the polemarch (commander-in-chief). Before the concept of the political state arose, four tribes based upon family relationships dominated the area. The members had certain rights, privileges, and obligations: Common religious rights. A common burial place. Mutual rights of succession to property of deceased members. Reciprocal obligations of help, defense and redress of injuries. The right to intermarry in the gens in the cases of orphan daughters and heiresses. The possession of common property, an archon, and a treasurer. The limitation of descent to the male line. The obligation not to marry in the gens except in specified cases. The right to adopt strangers into the gens. The right to elect and depose its chiefs.[14] During this period, Athens succeeded in bringing the other towns of Attica under its rule. This process of synoikismos -- the bringing together into one home -- created the largest and wealthiest state on the Greek mainland, but it also created a larger class of people excluded from political life by the nobility. By the 7th century BC social unrest had become widespread, and the Areopagus appointed Draco to draft a strict new code of law (hence the word 'draconian'). When this failed, they appointed Solon, with a mandate to create a new constitution (in 594 BC).- published: 17 Feb 2014

Mike Dawes & Chris Mike - Acropolis of Athens Jam
Hail mighty Zeus! Hail Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare! Behold the noble Athenian axeman Chris Mike joining a very lost Englishman beneath the glorious Temple of Athena, atop the steps of The Odeon of Herodes Atticus for a slightly unrehearsed musical unplugged jam session in Athens, Greece... This was such a memorable experience. Last weekend I visited Athens for a concert and guitar clinic. The people I met were so indescribably kind and hospitable, and during a morning off, the organiser Nikos, Chris (who was opening the show) and I quested to the Acropolis to film something. The site is incredible, and an iPhone video doesn't really do it justice. The Temple and many buildings in the area were constructed after the defeat of the Persians in 479BC. I hope the Greek Gods enjoyed the music :) The nasties at security wouldn't let us up to the Temple with our guitars, so we shot this video outside this incredible ancient Odeon on the hill. You can see the Temple of Athena in the background. For a closer look at the location (again, an iPhone cannot portray the magnificence of the buildings there) check out the link below... http://www.avahotel.gr/Documents/146_acropolis1.jpg Do check out Chris's music here, a great player and a great guy: https://www.facebook.com/chrismikepage?ref=ts&fref;=ts and https://www.facebook.com/chrismikeofficial?fref=ts If you're interested in hearing more of my music please do visit http://mikedawes.com or http://facebook.com/mikedawesofficial and say hi! Η Ακρόπολη των Αθηνών Acropolis of Athens

Yanni Live at the Acropolis-Greece in September 1993 at the 2,000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens. Yiannis Chrysomallis(Greek: Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης,born November 14, 1954), known professionally as Yanni, is a Greek pianist, keyboardist, composer, and music producer who has spent his adult life in the United States. Yanni continues to use the musical shorthand that he developed as a child, blending jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. As this genre of music was not well suited for commercial pop radio and music television,Yanni achieved international recognition by producing concerts at historic monuments and by producing videos that were broadcast on public television. His breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, yielded the second best-selling music video of all time. Additional historic sites for Yanni's concerts have included India's Taj Mahal, China's Forbidden City, the United Arab Emirates' Burj Khalifa,Russia's Kremlin,Puerto Rico's El Morro castle, and Lebanon's ancient city of Byblos. At least fourteen of Yanni's albums have peaked at #1 in Billboard's "Top New Age Album" category, and two albums (Dare to Dream and In My Time) received Grammy nominations.Through late 2011, Yanni had performed live in concert before more than two million people in more than 20 countries around the world, and has accumulated more than 35 platinum and gold albums globally, with sales totaling over 20 million copies.A longtime fundraiser for public television,Yanni's compositions have been used on commercial television programs, especially for sporting events such as the Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, U. S. Open Tennis Championships, U. S. Open Golf Championships, and Olympic Games. He has written film scores and the music for an award-winning British Airways television commercial. Yanni has employed musicians of various nationalities, and has incorporated a variety of instruments from around the world,to create music that has been called an eclectic fusion of ethnic sounds.Influenced by his encounters with cultures around the world, his music is said to reflect his "one world, one people" philosophy. www.yanni.com Yanni's breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, was filmed in September 1993 at the 2,000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens, an album and VHS being released in 1994.Acropolis was Yanni's first live album, and used his core band with a full orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Iranian conductor Shahrdad Rohani. --At the 1993 Acropolis concert, Yanni dedicated "Nostalgia" to the people of his homeland Greece, where he had not lived since 1972.-- Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purpose such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
