Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made an extraordinary plea for Jews to leave Europe and migrate to Israel to escape the rising tide of antisemitic terror attacks sweeping the continent.
Netanyahu said that Europe was no longer a safe haven for Jews following terror attacks in Paris and Copenhagen, adding that Israel is now the only country in the world where Jews can feel safe.
His comments - which came just hours after two people were killed in separate terror attacks in the Danish capital, one of which was on a synagogue - triggered an angry response from Copenhagen's chief rabbi, Jair Melchior, who said he was 'disappointed' by the remarks.
'People from Denmark move to Israel because they love Israel, because of Zionism. But not because of terrorism,' he said. 'If the way we deal with terror is to run somewhere else, we should all run to a deserted island,' he added.
France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls also slammed Netanyahu's comments, telling 475,000 French Jews the whole nation was 'wounded with you' after a gunman killed two people including a synagogue security guard in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Netanyahu's renewed call for a modern-day exodus came just a month after four hostages were killed at a Paris kosher deli.
Hundreds of graves at a Jewish cemetery near Strasbourg were also desecrated over the weekend amid heightened fears in France, which has the world's third-largest Jewish population. The unidentified University of Texas-Arlington student told police a white male driving a white Ford pickup with a Texas flag on the antenna followed her for six miles Wednesday morning before getting out of the vehicle and pointing a gun at her, the Dallas Morning News reported.
She offered specific details about the assailant’s attire, even noting that he had a black bracelet and a wooden, beaded bracelet on one wrist. Danish police said they killed a man likely responsible for two Copenhagen shootings – at a synagogue and at a café hosting a free speech debate. Early on Sunday, police fired multiple shots at Copenhagen’s central Norreport station, killing a man.
“The man was hailed. He opened fire against the police and was then shot to death. The man has died. No police officers were hit,” the police said in a statement.
Danish police said at a subsequent briefing that the dead man was the prime suspect in two Copenhagen shootings which took place hours earlier.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told French Jews Saturday, after 17 people were killed there during three days of Islamist attacks, that Israel is their home. In a televised statement, Netanyahu said, "To all the Jews of France, all the Jews of Europe, I would like to say that Israel is not just the place in whose direction you pray, the state of Israel is your home." In remarks on his official Twitter account, the Israeli Prime Minister added, "Unless the world comes to its senses, terror will continue to strike in other places." Media sources say that Netanyahu has also ordered a ministerial committee to convene next week to discuss ways to encourage immigration of French and other European Jews to Israel.
