As relations between Russia and the West have sunk to their lowest point since the Cold War, there's one country that's reaping rewards - Belarus, whose authoritarian leader was once dubbed "Europe's last dictator" by the United States and the European Union.
President Alexander Lukashenko is relishing his new role as broker of the Ukraine peace talks, and his country of 10 (m) million people is profiting handsomely by reprocessing or simply repackaging European food banned by Moscow in retaliation to Western sanctions.
In the most stunning example, exports of sea fish from the landlocked nation have doubled during the last three months - a sure sign that something curious is afoot.
"Of course our priority is the relations with our strategic partner - the Russian Federation as well as with our direct neighbour and the second most important business partner - the European Union," said Dmitry Mironchik, the country's Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Food exports to Russia have been a major hard currency-earner for cash-strapped Belarus, worth 5.7 billion US dollars in 2013.
This year's figures aren't available yet, but a sharp rise in imports of food from Europe signalled that the country, which is sandwiched between Russia and EU members Poland and Lithuania, quickly took advantage of Moscow's ban.
But not everybody agrees this is all good for Belarus.
"When I want to buy something, I look at the price and I'm scared, and don't want (to buy it) anymore because I have little money, my pension is not enough. The rent is increasing, everything is getting more expensive. Nothing is good and no good is to expect," said Svetlana Danilova, a pensioner who sells newspapers in the streets of Minsk.
Thanks to Lukashenko's friendly ties with the leaders of both Ukraine and Russia, Belarus has been able to serve as neutral ground for peace talks over the situation in Ukraine.
Both Russia and the West would like Belarus to continue playing host to the negotiations.
With Russian President Vladimir Putin now in the West's bad books, Lukashenko is no longer a prime target of criticism despite his continuing crackdown on dissent and independent media.
Lukashenko is looking to take advantage of that.
His government is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund on a prospective new loan, and Lukashenko's economics minister recently attended a London conference intended to lure foreign investors.
According to Yaroslav Romanchuk, who is the head of Mises Research Centre in Minsk, Lukashenko is keen to play the role of a bridge between Russia and the EU "because he wants the West, OSCE (The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe) in particular to recognise his elections as free and fair in 2015."
The Belarusian leader, who has been in power for two decades, is trying to create "the impression that he is pursuing independent economic policy, that he is working under severe pressure from Russia," Romanchuk said.
He is also desperate for cash as next year, Belarus has to pay 4 (b) billion US dollars in foreign debts, a significant amount for a nation that only has 5.8 (b) billion US dollars in hard currency reserves.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused western policy towards Ukraine of aggravating the situation in Minsk on Tuesday.
Speaking after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Lukashenko said elections had failed to bring the expected results. Lavrov stated that Moscow shared this view, and urged talks to continue on the basis of the Minsk agreements. Lavrov also remarked that the deals made in Minsk were the only deals supported by all parties, including Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, EU and U.S.
The EU imposed further sanctions on Mondays, including asset freezes and travel bans on anti-Kiev militia fighters but chose not to enforce economic sanctions against Russia.

Byelorussiya; IPA: [bʲɪloˈrussɪʲɐ]), officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its capital is Minsk; other major cities include Brest, Hrodna (Grodno), Homiel (Gomel), Mahilioŭ (Mogilev) and Vitsebsk (Vitebsk). Over 40% of its 207,600 square kilometres (80,200 sq mi) is forested. Its strongest economic sectors are service industries and manufacturing.
Until the 20th century, different states at various times controlled the lands of modern-day Belarus: for example: the Principality of Polotsk (11th to 14th centuries), the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. In the aftermath of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Belarus declared independence as the Belarusian People's Republic, succeeded by the Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia, which became a founding constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1922 and was renamed as the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Byelorussian SSR). Belarus lost almost half of its territory to Poland after the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921. Much of the borders of Belarus took their modern shape in 1939 when some lands of the Second Polish Republic were reintegrated into it after the Soviet invasion of Poland and were finalized after World War II. During World War II, military operations devastated Belarus, which lost about a third of its population and more than half of its economic resources. The republic was redeveloped in the post-war years. In 1945 Belarus became a founding member of the United Nations, along with the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian SSR.

As relations between Russia and the West have sunk to their lowest point since the Cold War, there's one country that's reaping rewards - Belarus, whose authoritarian leader was once dubbed "Europe's last dictator" by the United States and the European Union.
President Alexander Lukashenko is relishing his new role as broker of the Ukraine peace talks, and his country of 10 (m) million people is profiting handsomely by reprocessing or simply repackaging European food banned by Moscow in retaliation to Western sanctions.
In the most stunning example, exports of sea fish from the landlocked nation have doubled during the last three months - a sure sign that something curious is afoot.
"Of course our priority is the relations with our strategic partner - the Russian Federation as well as with our direct neighbour and the second most important business partner - the European Union," said Dmitry Mironchik, the country's Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Food exports to Russia have been a major hard currency-earner for cash-strapped Belarus, worth 5.7 billion US dollars in 2013.
This year's figures aren't available yet, but a sharp rise in imports of food from Europe signalled that the country, which is sandwiched between Russia and EU members Poland and Lithuania, quickly took advantage of Moscow's ban.
But not everybody agrees this is all good for Belarus.
"When I want to buy something, I look at the price and I'm scared, and don't want (to buy it) anymore because I have little money, my pension is not enough. The rent is increasing, everything is getting more expensive. Nothing is good and no good is to expect," said Svetlana Danilova, a pensioner who sells newspapers in the streets of Minsk.
Thanks to Lukashenko's friendly ties with the leaders of both Ukraine and Russia, Belarus has been able to serve as neutral ground for peace talks over the situation in Ukraine.
Both Russia and the West would like Belarus to continue playing host to the negotiations.
With Russian President Vladimir Putin now in the West's bad books, Lukashenko is no longer a prime target of criticism despite his continuing crackdown on dissent and independent media.
Lukashenko is looking to take advantage of that.
His government is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund on a prospective new loan, and Lukashenko's economics minister recently attended a London conference intended to lure foreign investors.
According to Yaroslav Romanchuk, who is the head of Mises Research Centre in Minsk, Lukashenko is keen to play the role of a bridge between Russia and the EU "because he wants the West, OSCE (The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe) in particular to recognise his elections as free and fair in 2015."
The Belarusian leader, who has been in power for two decades, is trying to create "the impression that he is pursuing independent economic policy, that he is working under severe pressure from Russia," Romanchuk said.
He is also desperate for cash as next year, Belarus has to pay 4 (b) billion US dollars in foreign debts, a significant amount for a nation that only has 5.8 (b) billion US dollars in hard currency reserves.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused western policy towards Ukraine of aggravating the situation in Minsk on Tuesday.
Speaking after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Lukashenko said elections had failed to bring the expected results. Lavrov stated that Moscow shared this view, and urged talks to continue on the basis of the Minsk agreements. Lavrov also remarked that the deals made in Minsk were the only deals supported by all parties, including Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, EU and U.S.
The EU imposed further sanctions on Mondays, including asset freezes and travel bans on anti-Kiev militia fighters but chose not to enforce economic sanctions against Russia.

Minsk is a fantastic picturesque city with Europe's most beautiful girls. It is safe and easy to navigate from one part of the city to the next using the metro system. I also found Belorussians to be most welcoming and friendly with tourists. The exception is people who work for the government. They are mean and ridiculously rude. Stay away from them at all costs. Sex Trafficking in Belarus
The film introduces the issue of sex trafficking in a country that is known to have one of the worst reputations for sex trafficking; which is Belarus. The film explains that women and children are the largest victims of sex trafficking and expands on this idea to explain how the victims are targeted and brought into the sex trafficking industry. Furthermore, the film explains what the Belarus Government is doing about the issue, and how others can help to stop sex trafficking.

In October of last year, Alexander Lukashenko swept to his fifth term as the Belarusian president, marking 22 years in power. Despite the elections being marred by allegations of fraud, the EU in February lifted travel sanctions against Lukashenko's government, as a reward for good behavior — the elections passed without a repeat of 2010’s violent crackdown against opposition parties. But critics argue that the EU is making a dangerous endorsement of an autocratic regime that still employs the use of internet surveillance, censorship, and intimidation to exert control over its people and press.
VICE News meets the Belarusian journalists and bloggers struggling to tell the truth about Belarus in this post-soviet dictatorship.

In October 2015 a presidential election was held in Belarus.
It wasn't a convincing contest and few thought that victory would go to anyone other than the man who had ruled the country for the past two decades. With an economy in tatters and a chilling charge list of human rights violations against his name, Alexander Lukashenko has long presided over Europe's closest equivalent to North Korea.
That said, the president many accuse of being a dictator eschews a personality cult. There's little need, say his opponents; Lukashenko rules through fear.
Today, time-warped Belarus provides a glimpse into what life was like before the collapse of the Soviet Union, where the secret police are still called the KGB and the success of the economy is measured in tractor sales.
In the run-up to the poll, filmmaker Glenn Ellis went to investigate the state of political freedom in Belarus, the reasons behind Lukashenko's apparently unshakable grip on power and the capacity of the country's embattled and suppressed opposition to fight back against overwhelming state repression.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Belarus, a former member of the USSR. Today it remains a country with a heavy soviet atmosphere, a state-controlled economy, censorship and fixed elections. However Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is a cosmopolitan city, elegant and well maintained. Tourists in Minsk can find several attractions and generally don’t feel oppressed in any way.

1. The longest street in Belarus - Independence Avenue in Minsk is 15 km long. Throughout its history, it not only grew in length and width, but also changed it’s name of 14 times. This is one of the last mainline neoclassical ensembles in the world of architecture, one of the longest street in Europe, and a Bidder for inclusion in the List of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
2. Belarus still applies the death penalty. The ultimate punishment has been completely abolished in all European countries, except for Belarus and Kazakhstan. Capital punishment can be issued for crimes that occur against the state or against individuals.
3. The national Library of Belarus is 72.6 meters high and weighs 115 000 tonnes. Total area - 112,600 m². The building has 22 floors, it can seat about 2,000 readers and features a 500-seat conference hall. As of 2009 it is the only structure in Minsk with a public observation deck.
4. Minsk Botanical Garden is the 3rd largest in Europe, after the Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London, and Real Jardin Botanico in Madrid. The Area of the Botanical Garden is 96 hectares. It dates from 1932 and feature some 9,000 different species.
5. Nobody would guess that in 1939 - 1946 Minsk was the jazz capital of the USSR. During these years, Eddie Rosner, a German Jew who came to Minsk after the manifestation of Hitler's attitude toward Jews, worked in Minsk Art. Since 1946, Jazz was banned in the Soviet Union, and Rosner was sent to the Gulag for 10 years. Since jazz was considered an American movement, all traces of it were oppressed by the soviet authorities.
6. Belarus was one of the first nations in Europe to have its own printed Bible (1517). Belarus’ first printer Frantsysk Skorina started his publishing business in Prague where he printed 23 illustrated Bibles. They were published in the old Belarusian language. In the early 1520s he moved to Vilno where he founded a publishing house. It printed the Small Travel Guide and Book of the Apostles. Frantsysk Skorina's works were distinguished by high print quality, unique illustrations and distinctive typefaces.
7. Belarusian is one of the East Slavic languages and shares many grammatical and lexical features with other members of the group. To some extent, Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian are mutually intelligible. Its predecessor stage is known as Old Belarusian (14th to 17th centuries), in turn descended from Old East Slavic (10th to 13th centuries). The question of whether contemporary Belarusian and Russian (as well as Ukrainian and Rusyn) are dialects of a single language or separate languages is not entirely decided by linguistic factors alone, since there is a high degree of mutual intelligibility.

For food I had a hard time in most restaurants. Go to the buffets as they are better. i know that the country has a terrible reputation. I do feel it is rather undeserved though. Yes there is repression but it did at least appear a safe country to live in without starving people.
I filmed this Vlog over a couple of days and did my best to give a realistic impression of what it's like for a tourist to visit Minsk and Belarus. I also filmed a little around the city of Gomel but didn't really come across anything of major significance.
I travelled through the country by train. The trains were old and Soviet but comfortable and extremely cheap. I highly recommend going by rail when traveling anywhere within the country of Belarus.
The nightclubs in Minsk are amongst the best in all of Europe. Belorussian girls are absolutely stunning, extremely fit, beautiful and very friendly. I recommend anyone, backpackers and business travelers alike making their way through Europe to visit the country.
