Finnish Mythology - Suomen Mytologia
Finnish Mythology - Suomen Mytologia
I am tired of ignorance from people who talk about finnish history and mythology. They always think that Sweden and Norway are the only countries who have the history. That's so WRONG! We have very colorful and great history and mythology, that we can be proud of. The sad thing is that nowadays people dont know anything about those, not even finns. That I will try to change. This is just the first part of these videos and everything is not told yet. I will try to make more videos as soon as I can because this is a part of our history that has to be told. »Kansalla, joka ei tunne historiaansa, ei ole tulevaisuutta.» JV SNELLMAN Songs are from Enya.

Cry of the Wolves
Cry of the Wolves
Gathered up a nice number of wolf pictures and made this clip. Joik is Meahcci(nature) made by Ulla Pirttijärvi. Pictures belong to their owners, like always. PS, as I was being corrected by a nice fellow, I'll quote here: The joik is called Máttaráhku askái (In our foremothers' arms) from her album Máttaráhku askái.

Sibelius: Lemminkainen in Tuonela, Part 1
Sibelius: Lemminkainen in Tuonela, Part 1
Tuonela is considered to be the the realm of the dead or the Underworld in Finnish mythology, similar to Hades in Greek mythology. I have really began to like Sibelius's music! I used to only judge a composer by about 2 of his compositions, but now I try and listen to more so I can really get to know the music of a composer. I have found that with Sibelius. I used to think his music is strange, hard to listen to and boring, but now, after listening to quite a few of his pieces, I have found joy in listening to his music. I hope to do the same with other composers, such as Ottorino Respighi, Elgar, Nielsen and others I hope you enjoy this piece!

Empire of Tharaphita - Beyond the Astral Sea - Kältas Ekwä
Empire of Tharaphita - Beyond the Astral Sea - Kältas Ekwä
Finnish Black Metal. From the Split with Drowning the Light. Tharaphita is an ancient Finno-Ugrian entity of creative/destructive fire (symbolized by the swastika and the septagram) that gave birth and later destroys all the dimensions and worlds in existence. Tharaphita is also seen as the dragon-serpent biting its own tail (symbol of infinity), much as Ouroboros is in other cultures.

The Myth of the Birch (Kalevala)
The Myth of the Birch (Kalevala)
A slideshow based on the myth of the lonley birch left standing when man first cut down the forest and began to cultivate the first barley. Beautiful, paradiselike forests cover the earth, but in order to grow the barley, Väinämöinen, the legendary shaman-figure of The Kalevala, has to cut down the trees and burn the timber. In doing so he leaves one tree, a birch, standing. In this myth the eagle clearly represents the divine or a guardian spirit that will allow the shaman to be in contact with an other reality. Väinämöinen explains that he has left the tree on purpose for the eagle and other birds, especially the cuckoo, to rest on. Birds depicted on shaman drums and rocks can be seen as guardian spririts. The lonley birch in The Kalevala can also bee seen as a holy tree, a place of worship where man could be in contact with the spirit world. This idea connects with tree worship in ancient times. (More about that in my video Pagana Tree Worship in Finland.) The birch has always played an important part in the lives of Finns. According to a survey made in 1987 most Finns prefered having a birch as "the garden tree" (pihapuu) to other trees. The special garden tree can be seen as an eco of the family worship trees of the ancients. The birch was also a popular tree because of the gifts it offered to the people: the wood, the birch-bark (used to manufacture many things such as baskets, shoes, roofing material and even primitive paper), the sweet sap, the brances used to ...

Kantele.mov
This is a little movie for all my Finnish family and friends. Erkki plays and makes many different instruments. Here he plays the traditional Finnish Cantele, then using two violin bows, plays a duet with himself. The woodcuts and paintings are from the Finnish myth the Kalevala. The artist is Akseli Gallen Kallela. This is my tribute to Finnish mythology and ingenuity.

MYTHOLOGIES ✗ Non/Disney
MYTHOLOGIES ✗ Non/Disney
As I stated in the vid, I was inspired by two editors: www.youtube.com www.youtube.com They both did videos with using characters from mythology. Now, I want editors here in YT join me and bring their home country's mythology to life by using non/Disney material. So, I want to see Greece, Egyptian, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Native American, Chinese what ever mythology. I know there are people with the same mythology but try to use different stories from the mythology. Everyone can participate, as long as you know how to vid (no slideshows, sorry). I will later ask download links for your story and bring them all to one channel. ✗RULES✗ ✗ Use your homecountry's mythology ✗ If you don't have mythology in your culture (eg some Americans) you can use for example your religion. Religions are full of nice stories. (If you use religion, please have respect and don't be offensive neither in the video nor in the description) ✗ Comment and tell me what mythology you are going to use (if you already know the story, you can tell me that too) ✗ only non/Disney animation films, no Pixar and no Tangled etc. ✗ Tell the story in your vid description ✗ Don't repeat stories ✗ Try to use fitting characters (don't maybe use Jasmine if you have Northern mythology) ✗ Enjoy and be creative! You can then add your finished videos as a response to this. This project goes on as long as we have videos coming! ✗PARTICIPANTS - MYTHOLOGY✗ ✗ Anax7 - Finnish mythology ✗ noncielo ...

MST3K - Favorite Moments - The Magic Voyage of Sindbad
MST3K - Favorite Moments - The Magic Voyage of Sindbad
In episode 505 we're once again treated to russian cinema - actually done by award winning director Aleksandr Ptushko (though he's credited here as Alfred Pusco) who won a special prize in Cannes in '46 for use of colour in "The Stone Flower" and won the Silver Lion in Venice with "Sadko" (as is the original title of this movie) in '53. He's is also behind The Sword and the Dragon (Illya Muromets), and The Day the Earth Froze (Sampo) also featured in MST - as his other works they're based on russian or finnish mythology. Actually, this movie's transformation from Sadko to Sindbad could have something to do with the impossibility of selling a commie movie to the american audience at the time... Fun Fact - Screen adaptor for Sindbad (Sadko) was none other than a young Francis Ford Coppola! Anyway, this movie features beards, stratego hats, a rather exaggerated version of Battlechess, beards, misunderstood pony-rides, the bird of happiness, beards, a rather friendly chicken, the vikings of Sindbad, a seahorse ride, more beards, treatable Luberia, suddenly sushi, Manicdepressiveville, clackerhats, narration by God, lots and lots of very big long beards, and thousands of russians! Enjoy!

***Singing a Kalevala runo in Finnish [Ensiferum]***
***Singing a Kalevala runo in Finnish [Ensiferum]***
Now you´ll see the true purpose of this runo melody. ;) My friend recited a small piece from Kalevala in Finnish, which I recorded and combined with the Ensiferum music. Kalevala poems are very ancient and archaic, and thanks to the conservative nature of the Finnic language they have preserved through times unspoiled and intelligible, and some of them are well over 2000 years old.
