I′m Mark Broome... and you′re tuned into Day Break. Title: At least 2 killed, 1 arrested in Belgian anti-terror raid MARK: Our top story this morning... Two people have been killed and a third has been arrested during counter-terror raids in Belgium. We connect to Eunice Kim at the NewsCenter for the latest on this developing story. Eunice... we don′t know the full details about what exactly has gone down there... but officials have confirmed that they were working on information there could have been imminent terror attacks in Brussels? EUNICE: That′s right, Mark. This raid in the town of Verviers was just ONE of about a dozen anti-terror raid Belgian police had conducted on Thursday. A spokesman for the federal prosecutor said the operation was a result of weeks of investigation... and that the well-armed group was planning "terror attacks" on police buildings within days... or even hours. A fierce gun battle ensued when authorities closed in on them on the upper-level of an apparent residential building... near the city′s train station. The official said the suspects immediately opened fire... adding no police or by-standers were injured in the raid. MARK: Now there are some reports this could be linked to the Paris terror attacks last week. But we know that several countries are participating in the investigation. What′s the Belgian connection? EUNICE: Well, Belgian officials had earlier said they were probing one man for links to Amedy Coulibaly... the suspect in the Paris kosher supermarket attack. The man was arrested for illegal weapons trade... and apparently had claimed he had "wanted to buy a car from the wife of Coulibaly." That appears to be the only link so far, though the federal prosecutor′s spokesman said the investigation will continue. Belgium... is a country that has seen a noticeable rise in radical Islamism. An estimated 300 Belgians are believed to have gone to Syria to fight... that′s a bigger proportion of foreign fighters than any other western nation. And of course the concern here is that those fighters could return to the country to strike terror back at home. MARK: Worrying times for
