Marne
Marne (French pronunciation: [maʁn]) is a department in north-eastern France named after the river Marne (Matrona in Roman times) which flows through the department. The prefecture (capital) of Marne is Châlons-en-Champagne (formerly known as Châlons-sur-Marne). The subprefectures are Épernay, Reims, Sainte-Menehould, and Vitry-le-François.
The Champagne vineyards producing the world-famous sparkling wine are located within Marne.
History
Marne is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the province of Champagne.
Marne has a long association with the French Army. The training ground of the Camp Militaire de Mailly straddles the border with the département of Aube in the south while that of the Camp de Mourmelon occupies a large area north of Châlons-en-Champagne. The smaller Camp de Moronvilliers lies to the east of Reims and the Camp Militaire de Suippes lies to the east of that. These are all on the chalk of the Champagne plateau, a feature comparable in geology but not size, with the British military training ground on Salisbury Plain.

Marne (river)
The Marne is a river in France, an eastern tributary of the Seine in the area east and southeast of Paris. It is 514 kilometres (319 mi) long. The river gave its name to the départements of Haute-Marne, Marne, Seine-et-Marne, and Val-de-Marne.
The Marne starts in the Langres plateau, runs generally north then bends west between Saint-Dizier and Châlons-en-Champagne, joining the Seine at Charenton just upstream from Paris. In the Champagne région, part of the water is led through the artificial lake Lac du Der-Chantecoq, in order to regulate the water discharge. This way, large inundations or low river levels downstream are prevented.
The Celts of Gaul worshipped a goddess known as Dea Matrona ("divine mother goddess") who was associated with the Marne.
The Marne is famous as the site of the eponymous two battles during the First World War. The first battle was a turning point of World War I, fought in 1914. The second battle was fought four years later, in 1918.

Marne is the seat of the Amt ("collective municipality") Marne-Nordsee.

In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI. The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris. Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack. Soon, six French Armies and the BEF met an overextended Imperial German Army. Famously the men of the BEF employed their bolt action Lee enfield with such speed and accuracy that the advancing Germans believed they were being met with machine guns.
By September 9th, they had seemingly encircled and destroyed the German First and Second Armies. General von Moltke faltered and a general retreat to the Aisne River was ordered.
The Germans dug in, resulting in trench warfare and an eventual stalemate that would last for four years. The German retreat ended their hopes of a quick victory and foiled the German Schlieffen Plan. The war now would certainly not be over by Christmas.

Together with the British Expeditionary Forces, the French are fighting the German advance near the Marne river. Meanwhile, the Austro-Hungarian army is retreating to the Carpathian Mountains after a catastrophic defeat against Russia with hundreds of thousands of casualties.

In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI.
The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris.
Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack.
Using requisitioned Paris taxis and buses—the first extensive use of motorized transport in wartime and forever celebrated as the “taxis of the Marne” – Maunoury and his reinforcements rushed to the front.
Soon, six French Armies and the BEF met an overextended Imperial German Army. Famously the men of the BEF employed their bolt action Lee enfield with such speed and accuracy that the advancing Germans believed they were being met with machine guns.
By September 9th, they had seemingly encircled and destroyed the German First and Second Armies. General von Moltke faltered and a general retreat to the Aisne River was ordered.
The Germans dug in, resulting in trench warfare and an eventual stalemate that would last for four years. The German retreat ended their hopes of a quick victory and foiled the German Schlieffen Plan. The war now would certainly not be over by Christmas.
