For centuries, scientists imagined objects so heavy and dense that their gravity might be strong enough to pull anything in - including light. They would be, quite literally, a black hole in space. But it's only in the past few decades that astronomers have conclusively proved their existence. Today, Hubble lets scientists measure the effects of black holes, make images of their surroundings and glean fascinating insights into the evolution of our cosmos.

Afghanistan avalanches kill 186, humanitarian crisis feared
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:19
  • Updated: 26 Feb 2015
More than 180 people have been killed in north Afghanistan in some of the worst avalanches there for 30 years, officials said on Thursday (February 26), with heavy snow set to last for two more days after an unusually dry winter led to fears of drought. In the mountainous province of Panjshir, north of Kabul, 186 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the avalanches. Officials warned of an imminent humanitarian emergency in areas most severely hit by the bad weather, with snow sweeping through villages and blocking off roads. "The snow was too strong and so heavy, I have never seen such a heavy snow in my sixty-year life. It was too strong. We could not even reach out to our neighbours for several hours," said Khoda Dad, a resident from Abdullah Khil village which was hit by heavy snowfall. "From this district alone, 35 people have been martyred and three people wounded and 20 houses destroyed as a result of the avalanches," added Mohammad Sorab Dara, the district's chief. Despite bringing misery to so many people, the snow is vital for Afghanistan, where much of the rural population dependent on agriculture relies on snow melting in the mountains to sustain crops in the spring and summer. Farming drives the troubled Afghan economy, with about three quarters of the people living in rural areas, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation estimated in 2004. Irrigation is not extensive in Afghanistan, most of which is semi-arid, and aid efforts over the past decade or more have focused on trying to extend it, with mixed results.
