GP38-2 No. 2659 leads a healthy-sized West Side job around the West Leg of the Sunnyside Wye in Grand Rapids, enroute to switch all 4 of the customers on the line. The West Side Job, which is usually handled by Y297, as it is here, handles traffic on the Grand Rapids Terminal Subdivision north of Sunnyside: - "Joe Brown", Padnos Iron & Metal's Front Street Facility. Ships scrap in Gons - GRE Interchange: Tanks, CHs, and sometimes gons and centerbeams for their customers/interchange partners - Haviland Chemical: Tanks and an occasional box, inbound chemicals - Padnos's Turner St Facility, outbound scrap in gons Tonight's train will switch all 4, with the CH going to the GRE, the Box to Haviland, and the gons split between the Padnos facilities, with outbounds being pulled from each where needed. The GP38-2 has more than enough power for tonight on the flat mainline and spurs, but these trains used to reach far greater lengths, especially when the GRE was more active. When you think of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, you think of mountain railroading, of a thundering 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive, #734 charging up the hills, turning on the turntable at Frostburg, MD or leaving and arriving at the station in Cumberland, MD. What you might not think about is how the train gets turned after each run, once the train gets back to the shops in Ridgeley, WV. That's where I come in. Big Jim Video Productions was on hand for the 25th Anniversary celebration weekend at the WMSR - it included two guest steamers pulling short trains along the route - one through the Narrows, and one into West Virginia. On Sunday, a tank engine was pulling the train down through Ridgeley to the wye area. After the last train of the day departed, I hung around, knowing that 734 would be arriving in a little while with her consist. Enjoy the rare footage of Western Maryland #734 turning on the wye at the other end of the line, in Ridgeley, WV!
