香港小型巴士﹝簡稱小巴﹞主要分為公共小型巴士及學校私家小巴。公共小型巴士作為巴士和鐵路的輔助及接駁交通工具。根據現時香港法例規定，全香港只容許最多4,350 輛公共小巴營運。根據小巴牌照類別，公共小型巴士可分為紅色小巴及綠色專線小巴兩種，載客量為16人。至於學校私家小巴則作為學童往返學校之用。綠色專線小巴跟紅色小巴不同，綠色小巴的識別色以車身中央髹上綠色色帶以及於車頂髹上綠色的形式出現（所以行內俗稱綠色小巴為綠帶），於1995年開始改為只髹於車頂，由於紅色小巴出現"紅頂"的俗稱，相對綠色專線小巴便出現"綠頂"的俗稱，一般稱為綠色小巴或專線小巴。專線小巴的服務目的，主要是為某個社區提供與大型運輸系統接駁服務（如鐵路、巴士）。全部綠色小巴都有固定路線、服務時間、班次和收費，大部份路線設有固定車站，並需接受政府監管，按規定不得隨意更改。然而，部份專線小巴路線，亦有"名存實亡"（也稱"有線無車"）的現象；這多出現於乘客稀少（例如已取消的新界405A 長宏←→青衣碼頭）或有替代服務（例如新界607S 元朗大馬路↔天水圍(通宵線)，由79S分段取代；新界1M 西貢 -彩虹站，以1A名義營運）的路線。截至2009年12月，全香港共有2,977輛綠色小巴，行走354條專線小巴路線（71條港島專線小巴路線、82條九龍專線小巴路線及201條新界專線小巴路線），大部分路線由有限公司經營，當中包括一些集團的多家子公司。專線小巴大部份路線都設有固定車站，乘客可於固定車站侯車或於路線途經之非禁區位置截停上車。乘客於上車的時候需先繳付車資，現金車資需投入錢箱（不設找贖），不得交給司機。而大部分綠色小巴均接受八達通（部份路線設分段收費，需於繳付車資前先通知司機，讓司機調整八達通收費機；部分路線的八達通機設有按鈕，乘客需自行把收費機按至所需繳付的分段車費）。乘客可於固定車站下車，或於非禁區地點下車。下車前需高聲呼叫司機下車地點，或按電鈴（如設有，及只適用於固定車站），司機揮手作實。五十、六十年代，香港曾流行一種9人白牌車，行走於新界。這些白牌車的收費比巴士略高，車程也比巴士短，但因它是不合法經營的關係，警方曾大力掃蕩。 1967年香港發生暴動，巴士司機罷工，部分路線因而暫停服務，交通癱瘓，政府容許小巴進入市區，白牌車越來越受市民歡迎，數目不斷增加。 1969年，小巴由9座位增至14座位，從此14座便成為小巴的別稱。最後，政府在1970年推出白牌車合法化政策，由政府發牌，可以在港九及新界各地行走，即現時的紅色小巴。 4350輛小巴的限制亦是於當年制定，多年來並未有改變。 1972年，政府在山頂試行私營豪華小巴制度，同年5月1日首條私營豪華小巴1號線（往來山頂至中環）投入服務，結果試驗成功，遂於1974年正式實施專線小巴制度，至1975年港島已有6條綠色專線小巴路線。由於綠色專線小巴越來越受歡迎的關係，政府於1977年10月26日首次招標數十條綠色專線小巴路線，供公共小巴商或有興趣的商人競投，首批九龍及新界綠色專線小巴路線分別在1979年4月及11月投入服務。隨著時代發展，市民對公共交通需求不斷提升，政府亦批出九龍市區及新市鎮的專線小巴路線以供競投。早期的小巴是14座位，並沒有車頭頂地點牌箱。 1978年，各小巴陸續安裝車頭頂地點牌箱，以便更清楚顯示行車目的地。而政府於1988年批准小巴由14座增加到16座。而部分小巴商會亦曾要求政府放寬座位數目到20座，但因政府認為小巴為輔助性交通工具，而不被接受。由於綠色小巴受政府監管，政府為加強對公共交通的管理，歷年均鼓勵紅色小巴轉為綠色小巴經營。一般而言，公共小巴須有車輛登記及客運營業證，方可載客取酬；紅色小巴的車輛登記人和客運營業證持有人，往往是同一人，但由於綠色小巴營辦商可租用他人的小巴經營，所以同一輛綠色小巴，可以有不同的車輛登記人和客運營運證持有人。雖然公共小巴的車主可以申請將小巴從紅色轉為綠色（九龍83M、新界618是從紅色轉為綠色），或從綠色轉為紅色（只限與另一輛小巴互換牌照，不能單純地由綠轉紅；但從紅轉綠則不必與另一輛小巴互換），但從歷年的小巴分佈數字看，綠色小巴的數目持續上升。 90年代初豐田Coaster版本，俗稱"大牌箱
