NASA | A Year in the Life of Earth's CO2

An ultra-high-resolution NASA computer model has given scientists a stunning new look at how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe. Plumes of carbon dioxide in the simulation swirl and shift as winds disperse the greenhouse gas away from its sources. The simulation also illustrates differences in carbon dioxide levels in the northern and southern hemispheres and distinct swings in global carbon dioxide concentrations as the growth cycle of plants and trees changes with the seasons. The carbon dioxide visualization was produced by a computer model called GEOS-5, created by scientists at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. The visualization is a product of a simulation called a “Nature Run.” The Nature Run ingests real data on atmospheric conditions and the emission of greenhouse gases and both natural and man-made particulates. The model is then left to run on its own and simulate the natural behavior of the Earth’s atmosphere. This Nature Run simulates January 2006 through December 2006. While Goddard scientists worked with a “beta” version of the Nature Run internally for several years, they released this updated, improved version to the scientific community for the first time in the fall of 2014. You've probably been hearing a lot about climate change and how you should reduce your carbon footprint. But what's that exactly? Just like an actual footprint, it's a mark you leave upon the environment. No, not with your shoes but with every action that releases "Carbons". Those are the harmful gases, such as Co2, which are pumped out by burning fossil fuels, like oil or gas. And the more fuel is used, the bigger your footprint will be. You may think that by driving your car, the only carbons you release come from the engine, but no. Consider the carbons that are emitted just to get fuel into the tank: From the energy needed to extract the oil from underground, the pollution caused by transportation and refinement, to the final delivery to your local petrol station. Not to mention the Co2 released by manufacturing your car in the first place. More than you thought, eh? So unless you live in a cave; you and everything you own has it's own carbon footprint: Read a book -- Printing and distributing it uses energy. Brush your teeth and your tools will have a history in a factory. Even something as basic as an apple could have travelled hundreds or even thousands of miles to end up in your local supermarket. You see, it's pretty much impossible to leave no carbon footprint behind. China surpasses EU in per capita carbon emissions

China for the first time has surpassed the European Union in per capita carbon emissions, according to a new report. China, also for the first time, emitted more carbon than the United States and Europe combined, according to the Global Carbon Budget. China emitted 9.98 billion tons of CO2 last year, while the US emitted 5.23 billion tons of CO2 and the EU released 3.48 billion tons of CO2. Carbon emissions also rose 2.3 percent in 2013, slightly less than the average annual rise of 2.5 percent over the last decade. An manufacturing slowdown in China was the main reason for the decline, the report noted. Emissions in the US were up 2.9 percent. China released 28 percent of the world’s carbon in 2013, followed by the US at 14 percent, the EU at 10 percent and India fourth at seven percent. The four largest carbon emitters accounted for 58 percent of global emissions in 2013. The United States still emits the most carbon per person at 4.5 tons of CO2, more than twice the per capita emissions of China at 2 tons of CO2. The EU ranked third with 1.9 tons of CO2 per capita and India fourth with 0.5 tons of CO2.

Papua New Guinea is embarking on its first national forest inventory (NFI) under the arrangements for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD)+. The inventory will include not only activities for measuring timber volume and estimating carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions but also, significantly, a protocol for the first survey of the nation’s forest biodiversity. The combined inventory will make it possible to assess the trade-offs between protecting biodiversity and reducing emissions, in order to promote sustainable forest management and improve local forest community livelihoods. The data produced by Papua New Guinea’s NFI will be instrumental in developing sound government policies to sustainably manage the nation’s biodiverse forest heritage, on which most of the nation’s population depends, for the benefit of present and future generations.

October 3, 2014: Dr. Tom Pypker, Natural Resource Sciences, Thompson Rivers University Abstract: Peatlands are a critical component in the global carbon (C) cycle because they represent a long-term sink of atmospheric carbon. Today, soil carbon stocks in peatlands are estimated to be 1850 Pg (1015g); equal to 12-30% of the global soil carbon pool. Moreover, peatland ecosystems currently sequester an estimated 76 Tg (1012g) C-1 yr-1. Peatlands are also a significant source of methane (CH4) because of the anaerobic conditions occurring in the often saturated peat. The fate of the stored carbon in peatlands is now in question because many of the world’s peatlands are located in northern climates where temperature and precipitation are expected to experience rapid change. Using examples from my research in Upper Michigan, I will present information on how changes in hydrology and temperature may influence carbon emissions from peatlands.

Google Tech Talks December 16, 2008 ABSTRACT The Vulcan Project has estimated US fossil fuel CO2 emissions at the scale of individual factories, powerplants, roadways and cities. It has placed the inventory on a common 10 km x10 km grid at the hourly timescale for the year 2002. In addition to improvement in space and time resolution, Vulcan is quantified at the level of fuel type, economic sub-sector, and county/state identification. Vulcan is now estimating other years and including Canada and Mexico in its spatial domain. On April 6, the Harvard Environmental Law Program was honored to welcome Dr. Dan Dudek, Vice President of the Environmental Defense Fund's China office, to campus. Dr. Dudek is one of the world's leading experts in developing cap-and-trade programs to reduce pollution at the lowest possible cost. He is widely credited with developing the cap-and-trade model that led to dramatic reductions in sulfur dioxide, the leading cause of acid rain, in the U.S. Dr. Dudek now leads EDF's China office, where he designs carbon demonstration projects and develops market mechanisms to address large-scale environmental problems. The event kicked off Harvard Climate Week, sponsored by the Harvard University Center of the Environment. The talk, entitled "The Long March to Reducing Carbon Emissions in China," focused on what Dr. Dudek sees are the three options to achieving carbon emissions reductions in China: (1) a systemic approach, such as carbon taxes and cap-and-trade markets; (2) slowing the rate of growth of energy demand, such as energy efficiency investments; and (3) low- or no-carbon energy substitutes, such as solar power.
