Scott Joplin (ca. 1867/1868? – April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist. Joplin achieved fame for his ragtime compositions, and was later dubbed "The King of Ragtime". During his brief career, Joplin wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag.
Joplin was born into a musical African American family of laborers in Northeast Texas, and developed his musical knowledge with the help of local teachers, most notably Julius Weiss. Joplin grew up in Texarkana, where he formed a vocal quartet, and taught mandolin and guitar. During the late 1880s he left his job as a laborer with the railroad, and travelled around the American South as an itinerant musician. He went to Chicago for the World's Fair of 1893, which played a major part in making ragtime a national craze by 1897.
Joplin moved to Sedalia, Missouri in 1894, and earned a living teaching piano and going on tour across the Southern US. In Sedalia, he taught future ragtime composers Arthur Marshall, Scott Hayden and Brun Campbell. Joplin began publishing music in 1895, and publication of his Maple Leaf Rag in 1899 brought him fame and had a profound influence on subsequent writers of ragtime. It also brought the composer a steady income for life. During his lifetime, Joplin did not reach this level of success again and frequently had financial problems.

Radio's Most Dynamic Artist . . The Man At Whose Voice A Nation Trembled . . . Now the screen's most exciting NEW star ! ORSON WELLES in the picture Hollywood said he'd never make
365 days in the making - and every minute of it an exciting NEW thrill for you !
It's Terrific!
Everybody's talking about it!
The classic story of power and the press.
I hate him! I love him! He's a scoundrel! He's a saint! He's crazy! He's a genius!
Some called him a hero. Others called him a heel...
Thompson: Sentimental fellow, aren't you?::Raymond: Hmmm... yes and no.
[first lines]::Charles Foster Kane: Rosebud...
Female reporter: If you could've found out what Rosebud meant, I bet that would've explained everything.::Thompson: No, I don't think so; no. Mr. Kane was a man who got everything he wanted and then lost it. Maybe Rosebud was something he couldn't get, or something he lost. Anyway, it wouldn't have explained anything... I don't think any word can explain a man's life. No, I guess Rosebud is just a... piece in a jigsaw puzzle... a missing piece.
Charles Foster Kane: You know, Mr. Bernstein, if I hadn't been very rich, I might have been a really great man.::Thatcher: Don't you think you are?::Charles Foster Kane: I think I did pretty well under the circumstances.::Thatcher: What would you like to have been?::Charles Foster Kane: Everything you hate.
Charles Foster Kane: Hello Jedediah.::Leland: Hello, Charlie. I didn't know we were speaking...::Charles Foster Kane: Sure, we're speaking, Jedediah: you're fired.
Charles Foster Kane: I always gagged on the silver spoon.
[Quoting from Kane's letter]::Walter Parks Thatcher: I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.
Bernstein: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Switzerland... he was thrown out of a lot of colleges.
Emily: Really Charles, people will think-...::Charles Foster Kane: - -what I tell them to think.
Bernstein: President's niece, huh? Before Mr. Kane's through with her, she'll be a president's wife.
What I know of you I've only seen on the T.V.
heard on the radio
or read in the news
there's nothing else to see or to hear about in your defense
the verdict's in the word is out we know about you
and you have no voice
you have no choice
you could build yourself a fortress but you can't talk to me
and there's no way it's gonna go away
while the news of your success is right in front of me
make your bed
lie in it
don't complain
we're the same
or are we
you grew up way too fast
and the spotlight was as hot as you
our interest only fed by you you're bigger than life
accountability to me is your every sacred privacy
and who you know and where you eat are noted and key
where did you come from are you real?
how did you get this much appeal?
a modern god we follow you
where do you start and do you end
are you a part of our pretend
so you come outside
to finally take a look
up in the sky
where the angels dream at night
I said hey that's my star your dreaming upon
girl get your own star before I wish you gone
and she said little boy what you gonna do with your life
are you gonna be a doctor
what your daddy would like
and I said that's pretty far
way down the road
I'm only seven with a second grade load
how was your date last night
oh and what was his name
did you have a good time
or was it one to shame
his name was Adam
the date went great
are you psyched for the fall
your going on grade 8
and she said little boy what you gonna do with your life
are you gonna be a doctor
what your daddy would like
and I said don't jump the gun
I've got plenty of time
but yeah I'd like to have a business
that I could call mine
so you got your masters in psychology
that sounds really cool
can you got me one for free
I'll be interning for a year or two
hows college life been treating you
and she said little boy what you gonna do with your life
you gonna be a doctor
what your daddy would like
and I said I found my happiness
hope dad approves
I'm not an artist,
I'm an asshole without a job,
making money off alcohol.
Making money off calling myself out,
"Look at me! A fraud, a phony!"
Entertainer-
that's all you'll ever become.
You're no artist - you're a musician.
So entertain us,
come on and sing us a song.
Keep the customers drunk.
I'm not a writer,
I'm a kid with a guitar,
and a notebook of scattered thoughts.
Hum a tune, strum the blues,
write some cryptic words.
Whatever works to get you to the next verse.
Entertainer-
and once the curtains are drawn
you're screaming contradiction.
So entertain us,
come on, sing us a song
The customer's never wrong
I'm not a singer,
I'm the one with the microphone.
I've been making shit up as I go.
I'm not a singer -
they handed me a microphone,
said "Play along! the show's gotta go on!"
And the show must go on
"Entertain us! Entertain us!"
Give the customers what they want.
Entertainer-
you're so down in the mouth,
I am the entertainer I know just where I stand
Another serenader another long haired man
Today I am your champion I may have won your heart
But I know the game you'll forget my name I won't be here in another year
If I don't stay on the charts
I am the entertainer had to pay my price
Things I didn't know at first I learned by doing twice
But still they come to haunt me still they want their say
So I learn to dance with my hands in my pants
Rub my neck and just write 'em a check and they'll be on their way
I am the entertainer I've been all around the world
I played all kinds of places played all kinds of girls
I don't remember faces I don't remember names
What the hell it's just as well cause after a while and a thousand miles
It all becomes the same
I am the entertainer I come to do my show
You heard my latest record spin on the radio
Well it took me years to write it the best years of my life
It's a beautiful song but it ran too long wanna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3:05
I am the entertainer Idol of my age
Make all kinds of money boy when I go on the stage
They see me in the paper and in the magazines
If I go cold my feet get sore put me in the back of the discount rack
like another can of beans
I am the entertainer know just where I stand...
I'm just the pleaser You sure look pleased I'm just the pleaser You sure look pleased
I'm just the taxi-driver You get driven around I'm just the taxi-driver And you get driven around
Entertainer I'll keep you entertained The entertainer I'll keep you entertained
You can call me Mr. Three You can call me Mr. Five You can call me Mr. Nine I'll keep you entertained
so you come outside
to finally take a look
up in the sky
where the angels dream at night
