Palau (i/pəˈlaʊ/, historically Belau or Pelew), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 islands, which form the western chain of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. The most populous of these is Koror. The capital Ngerulmud is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Palau shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The country was originally settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from the Philippines and sustained a Negrito population until around 900 years ago. The islands were first visited by Europeans in the 16th century, and were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1574. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899 under the terms of the German–Spanish Treaty, where they were administered as part of German New Guinea. The Imperial Japanese Navy conquered Palau during World War I, and the islands were later made a part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate by the League of Nations. During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. Having voted against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, the islands gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
Gene banks are a type of biorepository which preserve genetic material. For plants, this could be by freezing cuttings from the plant, or stocking the seeds (e.g. in a seedbank). For animals, this is the freezing of sperm and eggs in zoological freezers until further need. With corals, fragments are taken which are stored in water tanks under controlled conditions.
Plant genetic material in a 'gene bank' is preserved at -280° Celsius in Liquid Nitrogen as mature seed (dry).
In plants, it is possible to unfreeze the material and propagate it, however, in animals, a living female is required for artificial insemination. While it is often difficult to use frozen animal sperm and eggs, there are many examples of it being done successfully.
In an effort to conserve agricultural biodiversity, gene banks are used to store and conserve the plant genetic resources of major crop plants and their crop wild relatives. There are many gene banks all over the world, with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault being probably the most famous one.

The Palau Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has issued a decision upholding guilty verdicts for defendants facing criminal charges in connection to the Pacific Savings Bank case. The Appellate Division upheld the guilty verdicts against Deborah Rengiil, Margo Llecholch and Sherry Tadao for multiple counts of cheating, grand larceny, embezzlement and money laundering. The defendants, who were granted conditional pardons in early January 2013 by then President Johnson Toribiong, argued that their due process and Constitutional rights were violated. The Appellate Division found that the defendants' rights to due process were not violated and their argument that their right to counsel was violated was without merit, concluding that there was no reason to overturn the convictions. ...

This goal was achieved for Tridacna derasa. As of March, 1990, the MMDC Giant Clam Ocean Nursery contained more than 10,000 mature first- and second-generation Tridacna derasa, ranging in age from 6-11 years. These specimens constituted the world's largest captive-bred giant clam gene bank. Hundreds of mature wild broodstock specim...

Australian aid saves lives: http://www.savethechildren.org.au/aid4change Vanuatu is vulnerable to natural hazards because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Cyclones, droughts and flooding also pose a threat to the country. Disaster responses are often slow due to the remote locations of many communities. Children are the most vulnerable members of a community during natural hazards because of their age and dependency on others. Children often face heightened risks including family separation, psychological distress and physical harm. Save the Children is working with schools in Vanuatu to integrate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) principles into their teaching and management practices, through the development of schoo...

We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day! While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall! We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. Luckily we had a dry bag to protect our camera gear. All in all, it was quite an ...
Forget about Hawaii, forget about Bali, forget your image of "paradise" because you haven't witnessed it until you've been to Palau! My family and I went on a weekend getaway to the pristine waters of, what many refer to as, the Pearl of the Pacific. In our modern and, more often than not, artificial world, it is a rarity to be able to experience a place so natural and untouched. Enjoy this video I put together of my short-lived, but very eventful trip to Palau! Song: Pumpin Blood by NONONO. No copyright infringement, all credit for the audio goes to its rightful owners!
