This is a lecture video developed for my online World Views and Values class currently in session at Marist College. In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video introduces students to that work and thinker, focusing particularly on the genre of the work, the cultural and historical context, and some of the key themes. The course itself is intended to introduce students without a background in philosophy to some of the key texts, authors, perspectives, and concepts of the History of Ideas, with a particular focus upon human nature, culture and society, and the reality underlying and encompassing human beings and their experiences. Intro music is Russian Easter Festival Overture, Op. 36, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, performance placed in the public domain by MusOpen
This is a lecture video developed for my online World Views and Values class currently in session at Marist College. In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video focuses on the theme of the personification of Philosophy as a semi-divine woman in the Consolation. We look at what function this literary device plays in the work -- and what it means for Philosophy to be something personal. The course itself is intended to introduce students without a background in philosophy to some of the key texts, authors, perspectives, and concepts of the History of Ideas, with a particular focus upon human nature, culture and society, and the reality underlying and encompassing human beings and their experiences. In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video examines the status of what Boethius calls the "goods of fortune" -- those goods which he previously enjoyed, but now find himself deprived of -- wealth, property, reputation, fame, position, and power. While all of these are indeed good things, and do draw our human desire, none of them are the fundamental good for human beings, and all of them contain some inadequacies in their very nature. This is a lecture video developed for my online World Views and Values class currently in session at Marist College. In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video discusses the connection between two key topics: Boethius' understanding of the working of Providence, its connection with Fate; and the conception of evil as simply privation of Being. In Boethius' viewpoint, evil does occur within the ordering of all events providentially, but only because those who engage in evil are actually to some degree lacking the being or nature which they ought to have. The course itself is intended to introduce students without a background in philosophy to some of the key texts, authors, perspectives, and concepts of the History of Ideas, with a particular focus upon human nature, culture and society, and the reality underlying and encompassing human beings and their experiences. In this portion of the class, we are reading, examining, and discussing portions of Boethius' work, The Consolation of Philosophy This video examines Boethius' attempt to provide a solution to a deep metaphysical problem -- how can divine foreknowledge and human freedom be compatible. He sets out the problem itself as a dilemma, then considers several possible solutions that turn out to be inadequate, and then frames a new solution of his own. Baltimore Sun 2014-07-01Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, commonly called Boethius (ca. 480–524 or 525 AD) was a philosopher of the early 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and prominent family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls. His father, Flavius Manlius Boethius, was consul in 487 after Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor. Boethius, of the noble Anicia family, entered public life at a young age and was already a senator by the age of 25. Boethius himself was consul in 510 in the kingdom of the Ostrogoths. In 522 he saw his two sons become consuls. Boethius was imprisoned and eventually executed by King Theodoric the Great, who suspected him of conspiring with the Eastern Roman Empire. While jailed, Boethius composed his Consolation of Philosophy, a philosophical treatise on fortune, death, and other issues. The Consolation became one of the most popular and influential works of the Middle Ages. A link between Boethius and a mathematical boardgame Rithmomachia has been made.
Thinking about what to do
Thinking about what to say
Silence is killing our weak and repulsive youth
Can't you see what I mean?
Self-deception holds you down
Crush the illusions and make your demand
Time to act and time to be
Nothing will come out of nothing my friend.
Afraid of the struggle and the pain
Seems easier to sit down and wait
Ignorance is killing our weak and repulsive youth
Can't you see what I mean?
There is no time to waste
You got to keep the faith
Stand up, grow up.
What will you do when the end is near?
Sneer at the people who opened your eyes?
Ignorance is killing our weak and repulsive race
Can't you hear what I say?
Something is holding you down
What can it be? Can't you see?
Dishonesty is killing our wild and rejecting youth
Comprimated state of minds, filling up your soul
Gene's determined right or wrong, ancient times ago
The battlefield war goes on, right inside your soul
Systematic mind reclusion, disorder in control...
The pressure is building up, detonations counting down
Self destructing acts are planning, futures now in soiled
Burning karma haunt your soul, euphoria take's control
Warhead power burns your veins, filling up your soul...
Cleanse your mind
Cleanse your soul...
Destination place unknown, history's coming close
Twisted thoughts reveals the pain, discovering the legacy
Shadows from a distant time, blocks the sun away
Declining down the depths, down the depths of despair
Gathered in the masses, in the masses of neglect...
Amend your life - empathize - concede
Improve your life - comprehend - take control
Feel the breeze, feel the touch of god and see
How it all will end, your fate is in his hands...
Coming
A revelation
In denial...
Gathered in the masses, in the masses of neglect
Elude the facts, the facts of your life
Gathered in the masses, in the masses of neglect
Evade the facts, the facts of your life...
Coming
A revelation
In denial...(coming closer)
Coming
A revelation
In denial...(take control)
Gathered in the masses, in the masses of neglect and hate
Amend your life, concede, improve, your fate is in your father's hands
So take control, proffer your soul, the truth lays open, take control...
Feel the breeze, feel the touch of god and see
Instant replay, flashing scenes
Your mind is full of grief
What's your problem, give it a try
Let's step into the night
You and me and everything
You wish you could delete
You might find something inside
Katharsis deep within...
Don't hesitate, embrace what is fake
You might find something inside
You might find something that's real in the end
Somewhere inside, katharsis insight...
Precious memories, day's of old
His heart is still with you
Loneliness is eating you
Your lust has gone astray
Sleeping with the enemy
Your time has come today
You might find something inside
Katharsis deep within...
An open mind...
Mind overload - out in the cold
Spiritual deception is taking its toll
Don't hesitate - embrace what is fake
You might find something that's real in the end...
Grief don't show no mercy - time will tell the truth
You don't need no pity - depth is what you need...
Contemplating, digging deep
Inside there's something more
Throw yourself into the pit
Stripped down to the core
Pain and suffering, holds you down
Crying for relief
Examine your innerself
Katharsis deep within...
Forever, trapped in this inner maze
Forever, trapped in this endless game...
What you see is what you get
So take your chance, fulfil yourself
What you want you'll have to catch
Be a winner outcast the rest
But don't dig your own hole...
Listen to the - lust is screaming
Listen to the - heat is rising
Listen to the - greed is calling
Listen to the - inner ego...
Forever, trapped in this endless circle
Forever, attached to this ball and chain...
Inside your chamber, inside yourself
Deep down in sleep a need unfilled
Let indolence take its place
Obey your thirst just take your turn
But don't dig your own hole...
I'm not the kind of person, that makes the world go 'round
I'm just looking for some pleasure; I need to rest my worried mind
Anxiety is my mother and my father is the lies
There's nothing unusual, we're millions by now...
Somewhere life is moving along in its pace
A clock is still timing the race
You're caught in an empty space
Another grey day
Die with me my friends
Die with me my friends
I used to trust in faith but now I know
Something will change they just will transform
Still we're moving and still improving
Our hope is glowing our faces showing
Nothing outwards a smile but still bored
Truth hits like a sword inner peace ignored
A part of you will die
And still you wonder why
A part of you will die
And still you keep on deny
Holding on of visions of good things to come
But your hope is not as strong
And your reach is not as long
And your memories gone
Somewhere life is moving along in its pace
A clock is still timing the race
You're caught in an empty space
Another grey day
Die with me my friends
Die with me my friends
I used to trust in faith but now I know
Stone cold reality, clinging hard to my anxiety
Sensors inside of me, trigging pain and instability.
Denying the source, disconnected and sore
The choice is there but my eyes are blind
Now what can be done? I stand alone
Something inside me tells me something is wrong
Fighting alone, exhausted and torn
This time it's for real but my will is weak
What if I'll fail, no one will stay
Put out the light, wave of anxiety I ride...
A stone cold heart
Further into the shade...
Torn and confused
Wave of anxiety
Torn by the rage and the fear...
Choking my soul, reacting too slow
The choice is there but my mind is weak
Now what can be done? I stand alone
Blindfolded, torn by the rage and the fear
Madness awaits, watch me reload
This time it's for real and there's no turning back
What if I'll die, no one will cry
Too much for one man to
Take and try to live through
The edge is turning to
Freedom and new life too
What now
Peoples expectations do exceed beyond the limits of reason
What if
Pressure is too much for one man to handle on his own
Cry out
Then give up and let the lethal fall do all the work they say
Strike out
No enemies are natural to humans but themselves OK
Accept
You're out and left alone in the cold for no reason
Too much for one man to
Take and try to live through
The edge is turning to
I start to wonder most everyday
Why all great moments slip away
I sense a feeling in every way
My human body starts to fade
Feel the weight of the world
On my shoulders as I kneel
From the weight of the world
What do I do for human kind
Feed the hungry lead the blind
Inside it's growing a changing scape
An inner power rules my faith
Feel the weight of the world
On my shoulders as I kneel
From the weight of the world
Try to save the world from human kind
Try to fight oppression of the mind
Use the power and the will to live
Overload aggression starts to give
I start to travel within myself
Re-discover feelings felt
The center of me my universe
Evolve yourselves and break this curse
Feel the weight of the world
On my shoulders as I kneel
From the weight of the world
Try to save the world from human kind
Try to fight oppression of the mind
Use the power and the will to live
Overload aggression starts to give
Feel the weight of the world
On my shoulders as I kneel
Behind secret doors with multiple looks
In dungeons so deep a secret that shocks
One person decides distinction or not
With shaking hands and nerves disrupt
The key to the future the key to despair
Lies in his hand and this ain't fair
Cut through the silence red tape and law
A shock to the system cutting its claws
A wave that shocked us all from little shack to building tall
Some kind of wake up call
A fire is breathing feed it with fear
The horsemen of darkness will appear
Sent from the heavens at the last day
The apocalypse will show us the way
Cut through the silence red tape and law
A shock to the system cutting its claws
Searching for justice finding a way
But revolution will turn the world grey
A wave that shocked us all from little shack to building tall
Some kind of wake up call
Feed it with fear the end is coming feel it's near
The key to the future the key to despair
Lies in his hand and this ain't fair
A wave that shocked us all from little shack to building tall
Red light districts breed younger victims
That pay with life to survive
Asphalt children play by their own laws
And suburbs give into crime
A new plague is running our streets and stunning
Our world that once were alive
Panic's spreading in ruins laying
The homes of the hardworking man
Weapons needed protect and feed it
Act normal and under control
Shotgun justice and we have lost it
As the child shoots the gun
Our fear it feeds
Violence breeds
Drive by shootings puts the neighbourhood
Into war that spreads like a fire
Three strikes then out the system can't fail
Policemen fighting their doubts
Red light districts breed younger victims
That pay with life to survive
Asphalt children play by their own laws
And suburbs give into crime
A new plague is running our streets and stunning
Our world that once were alive
Panics spreading in ruins laying
The homes of the hardworking man
Our fear it feeds
Embrace the god of solar fire
Fill your veins with devotion
Free your mind, proffer your soul...
Skeleton dance with warlord messiah
Putrefied and perished by sin after sin
Malevolent creations, feast on your bones...
Soul, contemplating your
Soul, proffer your
Soul, repulsive
Forms, possessions control...
Proffer your soul
Feast on your bones...
Ceremonial offerings in seventh heaven
Fill your veins with celestial devotion
I watch the illusions parade floating down the upstream bay
Laughing at my life as they float by
I have been more accepted and less avoided
Now my feelings been misled just for fun
A garden filled with everything that suits your mind
A place to rest your head to sleep
You know that you will find
The things you need the mystic fumes
Exploring dreams in foreign tunes
The atmosphere around you are no dreams no more, so
Get alive, make it real, realize because I do believe
Follow the upstream
Lost in a buzz you're afraid maybe you will have to stay
Laughing at your life as it passes by
Ascend with the fumes you inhale, just to find
That the world won't wait for you to come down
A garden filled with everything that suits your mind
A place to rest your head to sleep
You know that you will find
The things you need the mystic fumes
Exploring dreams in foreign tunes
The atmosphere around you are no dreams no more, so
All that's mine, owned by time
My inner void will die, come to an end
In the fall of the human race
We will kill our god that will descend
We wish to be eternal, never see the end
Our deeds they are infernal
The given laws we bend
Universe a void to fill
To tap our souls we need to drill
Inside us the answer will live
Inside us the riddle that gives
The life as we know it will end
And the gods that we know and depend on
Uni versus universe
Uni versus us all
Uni versus universe
Uni versus us all
DNA is the way
To control human race, live to last
In between man and machine
We will kill the spirits of our past
We wish to be eternal, never see the end
Our deeds they are infernal
The given laws we bend
Universe a void to fill
To tap our souls we need to drill
Inside us the answer will live
Inside us the riddle that gives
The life as we know it will end
And the gods that we know and depend on
Uni versus universe
Uni versus us all
Uni versus universe
We're building pressure, and take apart
Reproduce the lifeless heart
Explore the limits, we twist our will
In time we live to kill
Star formations cease to be
Fragments of a race will see
Extinction of a planet small
We must change and try to stall
Under the lens, we will evolve
And try to all the problems solve
Inside a world, that does not fit
Because for life it is too small
Under the lens, we will evolve
And try to all the problems solve
Inside a world, that does not fit
It will bring us to our fall
Star formations cease to be
Fragments of a race will see
Extinction of a planet small
We must change and try to
Star formations cease to be
Fragments of a race will see
Extinction of a planet small
We must change and try to
Under the lens, we will evolve
And try to all the problems solve
Inside a world, that does not fit
Because for life it is too small
Under the lens, we will evolve
And try to all the problems solve
Inside a world, that does not fit
It will bring us to our fall
Under the lens, we must change
Scream into the void that eats a way in you
The void that digs a hole in you
Fill it up with life
And the visions they will turn you blind
If you seek the truth behind the lie
Try to figure out the reasons why
Then you'll find the truth you can't deny
The edge is sneaking upon you
No matter what you try to do
Scared to fall into the chasm
To afraid now you will:
Turn, you'll turn away
Dare not face another day
So you'll turn, you'll turn away
Dare not face another day
Show your mask, the mask of fear
You will know
Show your mask, the mask of fear
This time
Show your mask, the mask of fear
You will know
Show your mask, the mask of fear
This time
A dream seethrough, analyze the failures you do
Analyze your dreams hold on to facts within your mind
And the visions they will turn you blind
If you seek the truth behind the lie
Try to figure out the reasons why
Then you'll find the truth you can't deny
The edge is sneaking upon you
No matter what you try to doth appears
Scared to fall into the chasm
To afraid now you will:
My heart is screaming and my vision is blurred
My soul is screaming and my eyes are darkened
Now take me away, let me breathe, let me sleep
Take me away, let me feel joy again...
My life is lonely and my future is bleak
This time I've lost it and I cant find the way out
Give me a day, give me a night, without pain
Take me away, let me feel joy again...
Born to laughter, grown up with tears
When will the pressure end?
When will it all descend?
The tide is high now and it's time to leave
This ship is ready but I'm lost, lost at sea
Now take me away, let me breathe, let me sleep
Take me away, let me feel joy again...
Born to laughter, grown up with tears
Distorted, jaded, uncontrolled
But the suicidal saviour lies...
Born to laughter, grown up with tears
When will the pressure end?
Sweet sister now it's time to break away
Turn the tables, focus on your life
Dear brother, break your chains to mass so grey
Well inside you, all the answers lay
Flesh that wants
Greed to feed
Cells that split, a new breed
Source of madness
Spring of death is in your thoughts
Grand illusions we believe is true
Flesh that wants
Greed to feed
Cells that split, a new breed
Inject your thinking, into other human's minds
Spread the message, spread the seed
Elect a leader, grow the man that's worth to live
Mutate from human, into our new breed
Flesh that wants
Greed to feed
Cells that split, a new breed
Disorders change the way of man
Change the path but no one can
Elect a leader grow a man
Crack apart and slip away
Reality turns grey
Impression turns to pain, transforms
Into dreams of thorns
Into dreams of thorns
The mind it feels like scorned
Fade into a blur so dim
Fate can be so grim
Grasping for a helping hand
But alone you stand
You can hear yourself say
I'm alive
Friends you lose as time goes by
Everyone stops asking why
Try to find some inner peace
Not to awake the beast
Do not awake the beast
The mind it feels like scorned
Corridors painted green, tiles on the floor
Tucked away never join reality no more
Misfit to society
Safe and sound mind is drowned
In a chemical haze
Empty eyes now your life trapped in a maze
No reliability
You can hear yourself say
I'm alive
Fade into a blur so dim
Something hides beneath our skin
Speaks to us in dreams
Destructive when we need support
Letting out it's steam
Demoralize our inner will
Nursing all the hate
In conflict with ourselves
We try to open up the gate
This time you will find
Patience, rest your worried mind
Turning loose the beast inside
Use all mortal tricks
Fulfill the dreams of instant death
Feel all senses mix
This time you will find
Patience, rest your worried mind
Lose track of time in yourself
Find yourself under a spell
You want to, you got to
You need to make it live
You will not, you can not
You must not try to give
Lose track of time in yourself
Find yourself under a spell
You want to, you got to
We summon our inner powers
We call on our hidden deeds
Mutation of mind in order
To muster the strength we need
We travel our inner void
A journey within our brain
Projection of thoughts inside us
The answer is still the same
To live for the moment
To live for one day
To live for the moment
This is the way
Facing our own extinction
We breed under sterile slides
Perfection of race disorders
The madman the crazy rides
To live for the moment
To live for one day
To live for the moment
This is the way
Choose to live
Evolution
The way of life
Revolution
The will to fight
Universe
Recombinate
Making it work with forced control
Pushing ones luck will take its toll
Playing a part can't change his role
Eating a way into his soul
You cannot challenge faith stop trying
You cannot sell the life you're buying
A broken spirit will not heal under pressure you will kneel
A monument of man's true nature an artifact of human traitors
A monument of man
It's true the shape will change
But the mind will always stay the same
It's true the shape will change
But the mind will always stay the same
Forced to accept ones actions real
From fantasy to mortal deeds
A living lie hypocrisy
Shock to the system a life to steal
You cannot challenge faith stop trying
You cannot sell the life you're buying
A broken spirit will not heal under pressure you will kneel
A monument of man's true nature an artifact of human traitors
A monument of man (rep.)
It's true the shape will change
But the mind will always stay the same
It's true the shape will change
A spring of life deep within our own soul
A force we would like to control
Under the veil of the conscious mind
Way back programmed into our spine
Nothing can fill this ongoing void
The meaning of life lies within our own cells
Under the structure a beast dwells
It's in you, it's in me
It's in you, for you to see
As knowledge will be misused
And power will be abused
We try to handle truth
Ending up seeking youth
Lost in the innerspace
We try to survive the human race
Lost in our innerspace
Crying and helpless you start to slip
Under the surface you lose your grip
Into the darkness within our own mind
There's no return for the human kind
Nothing can fill this ongoing void
Lost and consumed you're destroyed
The meaning of life lies within our own cells
Under the surface a beast dwells
It's in you, it's in me
You and me try to keep our sanity
One day we live and the other we try to runaway
Lost, lost in the passion of love
Chained to the passion of self destruction
Rise; rise as we feel it inside
Inject the fluid, it's time.
Let's hide away...
Blinded, blinded by light
What we feel is not what we get
Blinded, blinded by light
Inject the fluid it's time
Let's runaway
Push the needle, it's time to
Runaway
And leave this day behind...
Inject - Reject - Inject...
You and me want to touch the eternity
We keep on searching but nothing seems to come in our way
Lost, lost in the warmth of it's love
Chained to the passion of self destruction
Forget; reject the pain we don't want
Inject the passion, it's time.
Let's hide away...
Blinded by the light
Blinded by the light
Fill me up with your deadly love
Blinded by the light
Let's runaway
Push the needle, it's time to
Runaway
Don't want to face another day...
Rage, it's not easy to be left behind
Let love flow, let it flush, let it take control
Take control, you got to...
Inhale - let your spirit go now
Inhale - open up your mind now
Breathe in - set your body free now
Inhale - open up your arms now
Time, only time can tell the truth you seek
And brick by brick, tear it down - uninstall
Take control, take control...
Lost in your anger
Unable to let life
Inside you
Let joy come inside
Fill you up...
Inhale, breathe in and feel god...
Heart you're in my heart
Life is a gift from god
Don't let it slip away
Don't throw it all away
Soul, you're in my soul
I'll never walk alone
I'll never let you slip away
I'll never let you go...
Inhale - breathe in
Far from the shapes you once had
The mirror don't twist the truth
Touching your image try to grasp for your youth
Sentimental thoughts is bursting from a decomposing heart
Self inflicted remorse is eating from a throbbing heart
When the soft voices cry
Awful hard the truth appears
When the loud music dies
Awful real once grave appears
Far from the shapes you once had between black and grey
Spineless reflection shows soul gone astray
Faceless shadows represent the newborn hate in you
Scars of fate and marks of sadness I don't twist the truth
When the soft voices cry
Awful hard the truth appears
When the loud music dies
Awful real once grave appears
Sentimental thoughts is bursting from a decomposing heart
Self inflicted remorse is eating from a throbbing heart
Fusion of thoughts
Manifestation
Implosion of inside
Domestication
Assassination
Space exploration inside
Follow the orders
Worthless production
Cell structures fail to receive
Domestication
Assassination
Space exploration inside
There is no cure
Cells will divide
As will your life
Time to choose side
Under your skin
Muscles will die
Travel inside
Ooh - when it comes to violence
I think the world will crash any day, anyway - sad to say.
Ooh - when it comes to hatred
I feel the hope is gone, sad to say - but I think that it's true.
Look around you can't you see the signs?
Open your eyes, cant you see the lies?
Hand in hand, together, violence and bigotry
Together, forever in perfect harmony...
Borrowed time - precious time - living on borrowed time
Precious time - you're living on - borrowed time
Can't you read between the lines?
Borrowed time, is this the end?
Living on borrowed time, you got to read between the lines?
Ooh - when it comes to the truth, yeah
Do you really think that they would tell you, oh no...
Ooh - you're slowly fading away
Remember what I say; remember who's claiming to be your friend...
Borrowed time - precious time - living on borrowed time
Precious time - you're living on borrowed time
Can't you read between the lines?
Ooh - when it comes to the truth, yeah
Do you really think that they would tell you - oh no...
They will tell you all is fine, everything is gonna be alright
Just close your eyes, swallow the lies and fly away - just fly away...
Try to understand - you common man
Try to understand - the world is insane
Read between the lines - you common man
A life divides in two to never be apart
A mirror who looks like you one separated heart
No one but still the same a normal reflection
Two pictures in one frame natures deception
Friend or foe the same Abel and Cain
The cut runs deep sorrow will reap
Wants to stand tall just like a wall
Build to protect a mind that's defect
Act on impulse
Half way there
Into action
You're there
The left hand doesn't know what the right hand will do
Spirits return to dust you're driven by lust
Fail to see the truth distorted by youth
Facts are on your blindside as your eyes are getting wide
Friend or foe the same Abel and Cain
The cut runs deep sorrow will reap
Wants to stand tall just like a wall
Build to protect a mind that's defect
Act on impulse
Half way there
Into action
