Late Pope Paul VI to Move Closer to Sainthood
Former pope Paul VI who guided the Roman Catholic Church through one of its most turbulent modern periods will be beatified by Pope Francis on October 19.
Full Story:
The late Pope Paul VI, who led the Roman Catholic Church during one of its most turbulent modern periods and enshrined its opposition to contraception, will move a step closer to sainthood on October 19.
Pope Francis, who in April declared saints two of his predecessors, John Paul II and John XXIII, will beatify Paul, declaring him a "blessed" of the Church during a ceremony at the Vatican.
The timing of the ceremony, which will take place at the conclusion of a Vatican synod of bishops from around the world on the theme of the family, means Francis will have either canonised or beatified three of his predecessors in the unusually short space of six months.
Paul became pope in 1963 after the death of Pope John XXIII. He guided the Church through the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, which had started under his predecessor, and the implementation of its modernising reforms.
Born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897, he spent much of his career in the Vatican's diplomatic service before becoming cardinal of Milan.
Pope Paul headed the Church through the 1960s when many priests left religious orders and vocations to the religious life fell sharply in the turbulent era of social change.
He is perhaps best known for his controversial encyclical 'Humane Vitae' (On Human Life), which enshrined the Church's ban on artificial birth control in 1968.
Reuters Vatican correspondent Philip Pullella said there is much more to Paul than his stance on contraception.
"Paul VI is known primarily for his encyclical 'Humane Vitae' which banned contraception but he was much more than that," Pullella said.
"He was a modernising Pope who reigned for 15 years. He reigned during two of the most turbulent decades of the 20th century, the 60s and the 70s. And he decided to continue the Second Vatican Council which John XXIII had started. Had Paul wanted to, he could have not continued the Council but he did which meant that he wanted to continue the work of opening the church up to the modern world," he said.
"He was a deep intellectual, he was a very private person, he was sometimes indecisive, he listened to a lot of people before he made his decisions but he was the kind of Pope that laid the groundwork for the type of papacy that came after him, and that is that John Paul II," he added.
Beatification is the last step before sainthood. The late pope's move towards canonisation was made possible after the Vatican recognised what it says was a miracle attributed to Paul, who died in 1978.
The purported miracle concerns a pregnant woman in California whose unborn child was discovered to be at high risk of dying in the womb or being born with severe birth defects in the 1990s.
Doctors advised the woman to have an abortion but, at the advice of a nun, she prayed to the late Pope Paul. The child, now an adult, was born without problems.
A Vatican medical committee ruled that the healing was medically inexplicable.
Some of the pilgrims walking in the square remembered Paul VI well, but most did not have memories of his papacy.
"He was a Pope who did a lot for the world. I think it was a due act by Pope Francis to bring about his beatification," said Giorgio Fiora', a Rome resident.
"Frankly I have no memories of him. I am sure he must have done something good for the church and for the world, like those before him and those after him, but I do not know what and I don't remember him," said Deborah Martini, born in 1978.
Despite his long reign and relevance, visible traces of Paul VI in St. Peter's square are scarce and hard to find. His image is very rare in the many souvenir shops scattered around the basilica displaying a wealth of pictures of other popes, John Paul II, John XXIII, Francis and to a lesser extent also of the emeritus Pope Benedict XVI.
After the beatification, a separate miracle would be necessary in order for Paul to become a saint.

He is considered the patron saint of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, of Christian unity, of the Patriarchy of Venice, and of Papal delegates. Here is a video taken from his inaugural mass in 1958 in which he recited the Our Father, or Pater Noster in Latin.

His beatification process was started in 1965 under that same pope, and he was declared a saint by Pope Francis in April of 2014, along with a another former pope, Pope John Paul II (r. 1978-2005). He is considered the patron saint of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, of Christian unity, of the Patriarchy of Venice, and of Papal delegates. Here is a video taken from his inaugural mass in 1958 in which he recited the Our Father, or Pater Noster in Latin.

On how the Rothschilds took over the Roman Catholic Church between 1958 and 1965, after they already took over the worldwide financial operations of the Vatican in 1823. The Jesuit Order was founded by Los Alumbrados (80% Marrano Jews), financed by Dutch and Spanish Jews. The Knights Templar were agents of the Guilhemids, descendants of Prince/Rabbi Makhir, King of the Jews in exile in the 8th century, and uncle of Charlemagne.

Golda Meir Interview on Arab-Israeli Relations and Terrorism (1973)
http://thefilmarchive.org/
Golda Meir (Hebrew: גּוֹלְדָּה מֵאִיר; earlier Golda Meyerson, born Golda Mabovich (Голда Мабович); May 3, 1898 -- December 8, 1978) was a teacher, kibbutznik and politician who became the fourth Prime Minister of the State of Israel.
Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. Israel's first and the world's third woman to hold such an office, she was described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet became associated with British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Former prime minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government"; she was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people."
In 1974, after the conclusion of the Yom Kippur War, Meir resigned as prime minister. She died in 1978.
After Levi Eshkol's sudden death on February 26, 1969, the party elected Meir as his successor. Meir came out of retirement to take office on March 17, 1969, serving as prime minister until 1974. Meir maintained the coalition government formed in 1967, after the Six-Day War, in which Mapai merged with two other parties (Rafi and Ahdut HaAvoda) to form the Israel Labour party.
In 1969 and the early 1970s, Meir met with many world leaders to promote her vision of peace in the Middle East, including Richard Nixon (1969), Nicolae Ceausescu (1972) and Pope Paul VI (1973). In 1973, she hosted the chancellor of West Germany, Willy Brandt in Israel.
In August 1970, Meir accepted a U.S. peace initiative that called for an end to the War of Attrition and an Israeli pledge to withdraw to "secure and recognized boundaries" in the framework of a comprehensive peace settlement. The Gahal party quit the national unity government in protest, but Meir continued to lead the remaining coalition.
In the wake of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, Meir appealed to the world to "save our citizens and condemn the unspeakable criminal acts committed." Outraged at the perceived lack of global action, she ordered the Mossad to hunt down and assassinate the Black September and PFLP operatives who took part in the massacre. The 1986 TV film Sword of Gideon, based on the book Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas, and Steven Spielberg's movie Munich (2005) were based on these events.
During the 1970s some Russian-Jewish emigrants were allowed to leave the Soviet Union for Israel by way of Austria. When seven of these emigrants were taken hostage at the Austria-Czechoslovakian border by Palestinian Arab fighters in September 1973, Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky closed the Jewish Agency's transit facility in Schönau, Lower Austria. A few days later in Vienna, Meir tried to convince Kreisky to re-open the facility by appealing to his own Jewish origin, and described his position as "succumbing to terrorist blackmail". Kreisky did not change his position, so Meir returned to Israel infuriated. A few months later Austria opened a new transition camp.
Meir's story has been the subject of many fictionalized portrayals. In 1977, Anne Bancroft played Meir in William Gibson's Broadway play Golda. The Australian actress Judy Davis played a young Meir in the television film A Woman Called Golda (1982), opposite Leonard Nimoy. Ingrid Bergman played the older Golda in the same film. In 2003, the American Jewish actress Tovah Feldshuh portrayed her on Broadway in Golda's Balcony, Gibson's second play about Meir's life. The one-woman show was controversial in its implication that Meir considered using nuclear weapons during the Yom Kippur War.
Valerie Harper portrayed her in the touring company and in the film version of Golda's Balcony. Supporting actress Colleen Dewhurst portrayed her in the 1986 TV-movie Sword of Gideon. In 2005, actress Lynn Cohen portrayed Meir in Steven Spielberg's film Munich. Later on, Tovah Feldshuh assumed her role once again in the 2006 English-speaking French movie O Jerusalem. She was played by the Polish actress Beata Fudalej in the 2009 film The Hope by Márta Mészáros.

The program also includes the death of Pope Paul VI and a interview with Burt Reynolds as well as news events around the world back in the summer of 1978..this is just a piece of American TV from the 1970s and wanted it to be seen as a time capsule..also probably one of the best pieces of history from The Who and the TV archives

ADDRESS OF THE HOLY FATHER PAUL VI TO THE UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION
Monday, 4 October 1965
Was not this the very end for which the United Nations came into existence: to be against war and for peace? Listen to the clear words of a great man who is no longer with us, John Kennedy, who proclaimed four years ago: "Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind." There is no need for a long talk to proclaim the main purpose of your Institution. It is enough to recall that the blood of millions, countless unheard-of sufferings, useless massacres and frightening ruins have sanctioned the agreement that unites you with an oath

The Princes of the Roman Catholic church decided to hold the late Pope John Paul's funeral on 4th October and to begin the conclave to choose his successor on 14th October. The decisions were taken during a meeting of twenty nine cardinals in the Vatican Palace. A spokesman for the cardinals said John Paul's funeral would be an open-air ceremony in St Peter's Square - similar to the one held on 12th August for the late Pope Paul VI. Pope Paul VI’s Visit, Thousands Flocked to Welcome the Pontiff
At 3PM, the East African Airways flight transporting the pope touched ground causing a stir and massive excitement. The pontiff was welcomed by religious leaders and some dignitaries.
Among the excited crowd was the then President Dr Apollo Milton Obote, who had extended the invitation to the Pope, and the First Lady Miria Obote. This was history in the making too many at Entebbe and those following proceedings on Radio Uganda.
He waved to the chanting crowd as his convoy snaked through the streets of Entebbe on its way to Kampala.
His first task was to close the episcopal conference of Africa which had been going on at Lubaga Cathedral hill. Its main focus was how to boost missionary activity as expounded by the second Vatican Council.
The journey to Lubaga took two hours because of the crowds. The pope was received by Cardinal LaureanRugambwa of Tanzania, who by then was the only cardinal in East Africa and Archbishop AmelioPoggi who was the Papal Nuncio to Uganda.
The pope told the conference that his presence in Uganda should be taken as a visit to the whole of Africa. He thenpaid homage to Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka’s grave, which was inside the Church.
That evening, president Obote hosted him to a State dinner at Nakasero State Lodge where he presented the pontiff 22 ivory tusks representing the 22 martyrs.
The pope bestowed upon Obote, his vice, John Babiiha, and Foreign Affairs minister, Sam Odaka the Grand Cross of the Order of Pope Pius, and to the speaker of Parliament, Narendra Patel and the Internal Affairs minister, Basil Bataringaya, the Grand Cross of St Gregory the Great.
He later went to Nsambya at the Papal Nuncio’s seat where he was to stay for the night.

It is enough to recall that the blood of millions, countless unheard-of sufferings, useless massacres and frightening ruins have sanctioned the agreement that unites you with an oath that ought to change the future history of the world: never again war, never again war! It is peace, peace, that has to guide the destiny of the nations of all mankind!

WEST BANK: BETHLEHEM: POPE JOHN PAUL II'S VISIT
Natural Sound
Pope John Paul the Second has embarked on a politically sensitive pilgrimage to the West Bank town of Bethlehem, revered as the place of Jesus' birth.
The papal helicopter touched down on Wednesday at a helipad near Arafat's presidential palace, where the pontiff was formally received by Palestinian clerics, diplomats and officials at the start of his only stop in Palestinian territory on his week-long Holy Land visit.
The pope left Jerusalem on Wednesday morning by helicopter for the West Bank.
On Tuesday, the entire top echelon of the Israeli government was on hand as a fragile but alert and motivated pope began the first official visit by a Roman Catholic pontiff to the Jewish state.
In his brief remarks, the pope spoke words that would hardly have seemed conceivable when Pope Paul VI made an unofficial visit to the Holy Land in 1964.
During that journey, three decades before Israel and the Vatican established diplomatic ties, Paul VI didn't even mention Israel's name publicly.
The pope spent Tuesday night in Jerusalem at the Apostolic Delegation on the biblical Mount of Olives, in the disputed eastern sector of the city.
On Wednesday he embarked on a prayerful and politically sensitive pilgrimage to the West Bank town of Bethlehem, revered as the place of Jesus' birth.
As John Paul stepped off his Blackhawk helicopter, the Palestinians - in a gesture laden with symbolism for their statehood hopes - presented him with a golden bowl of soil, to which the pontiff briefly touched to his lips.
As the pontiff moved slowly forward, Arafat put a steadying hand on his stooped, bent back.
After meeting Arafat, the pope will celebrate Mass in Bethlehem's Manger Square, the traditional site of Christ's birth, amid heavy security.

Alabama, Pope
Alabama Story: Blacks Enrolled As Governor Yields
The University of Alabama campus is under tight security as Governor George Wallace confronts a deputy U.S. attorney. The Federal officers are armed with a proclamation urging the Governor to end his efforts to prevent two black students from registering. Wallace stands firm and President Kennedy federalizes the National Guard. When they move in, the Governor bows to Presidential authority and James Hood and Vivian Malone become the first two blacks to be registered at the University. That night the President appeals to the nation, saying the United States is facing a "moral crisis" and that it is the duty of all to uphold the law.
World Hails New Pontiff
Throngs in St. Peter's Square wait patiently and prayerfully for the puff of whites smoke that announces a new Pope has been elected. On the fifth ballot Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini becomes the 262nd Supreme Pontiff of half a billion Roman Catholics. He takes the name Pope John Paul VI and pledges to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII who pledged the Church to taking an active role in world affairs.

Pope John Paul II Documentary
Papa Giovanni Paolo II (in latino: Ioannes Paulus PP.

Fr. Hesse: Papal Infallibility - Fact vs. Falsehood
Fr. Gregory Hesse, S.T.D., J.C.D., S.T.L., J.C.L., Canon Lawyer, Doctor of Thomistic Theology, Lifelong Friend and Personal Secretary of Cardinal Stickler at the Vatican from 1986-1988 gives a no-nonsense, intelligent, learned, and witty exposition and explanation of relevant topics facing contemporary faithful Catholics. Fr. Hesse got to know approx. 45 cardinals while studying and working in Rome for 15 years and he has an uncanny and substantial knowledge of many things. You would be hard-pressed to find another theologian quite like him. A breath of fresh air in today’s widespread climate of many weak, ignorant, and naive clerics and theologians, he was affectionately called by several of his friends during his life “the bull in the china shop.” His example, testimony, and insights no doubt played and will play an important role in Catholic thought and development. Listen to find out why.
You can download the free MP3 of this talk and all of Fr. Hesse’s talks to listen to on your computer or portable audio devices at the following URL:
https://spideroak.com/browse/share/Hesse/Audio
In this video, Fr. Hesse discusses actual Church teaching on papal infallibility and papal authority and dispels many misunderstandings and myths about papal infallibility that are commonly held by Catholic lay faithful and clerics nowadays.
Fr. Hesse answers the question: How far are we obliged to follow a Pope? To answer this, we have to understand the true teaching of the Church on papal infalliblity, and even more importantly, on papal authority. Fr. Hesse covers these topics.
He also discusses the very relevant and important question concerning the doctrine about the indefectibility of the Catholic Church [“Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)] and the historical examples in previous centuries and the present-day reality of materially heretical and bad Popes who poorly exercise their office, such as Pope Liberius, Pope Honorius, Pope John XXII, Pope Alexander VI, etc.
