Watch more How to Understand Addiction videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/506598-Most-Common-Substance-Addictions-Addictions Learn all about substance abuse from Dr. Paul Hokemeyer in this Howcast video. Substance abuse is typically used interchangeably with drug abuse, but substance abuse's can refer to something different. So very often people take substances, like household cleaners or chemicals and they ingest them, they huff them. Say gasoline, they huff gasoline to get a high. So somebody's using a substance that's not intended for the purpose that it was created to catch a buzz and get high. What happens with this is people expose themselves to negative consequences. So they're inhaling something and it's having a negative impact on their brain. It's having a negative impact on their lungs and it's causing negative consequences in their life. Substance abuse can occur where somebody uses just on the weekends or they use a couple times a month. So they're not constantly using the drug. They're not dependent upon the drug, but they're using it in an abusive way. The abuse comes then to their own bodies, because they're ingesting something into their bodies that causes either physical or mental harm to them. So the difference here is that the person is not dependent upon it. They don't need it per se, but they use it in a way that it was not intended and in a way that ultimately, is going to negative consequences on their life.

One of my friends was willing to sit down and talk openly about his own issue with drugs and alcohol in an effort to help others. Aaron Marino of alpha m. introduces viewers to Tony. Normally, we are talking about light issues, but today we are talking about addiction. Alpha feels that this topic is vital to discuss on IAmAlphaM. People need to see that guys like us struggle with dependency and it's okay. Tony discusses his decision to become sober (stop using pain pills and alcohol). He is a recovering addict. Everything was aces for Tony during and after college. Thereafter, he got painkillers for migraines. He started to 'like' it, and it was a great feeling. It helped the pain and gave him a buzz. He got to the point that he was married with kids and worked a lot of hours at a successful career. He started developing a void that got greater and greater. Then he hit rock bottom where he couldn't take it anymore. He had hid it from anyone, but ultimately he discussed everything with his wife. How do you know that you have a problem? You have problem when you become powerless. A normal person can go out and have a good time. They move on. Other people have no power once they have the first drink or pill. They can blackout, have terrible consequences, and have regretful behavior. Once that happens on a continual basis, it's too much for someone to handle. If continuing down that road, it will get worse. How to take action To acknowledge you have a problem takes a strong person. Taking action and getting help takes even a stronger person. Alpha discusses the importance of therapy and a support system to facilitate successful sobriety. When deciding to get sober, the only person to make that decision is you. When you want help: you can Google 12 step programs, you can see an addiction specialist, or you can go to a treatment center. There is help out there.Tony is a testament to what can happen, and Alpha thanks him for helping others. If feel if you have a problem, seek help. You can do this!

So, what are your professional boundaries? When we talk about professional boundaries, we are referring to the ethical guidelines and expectations that a professional uses to guide their everyday interactions with the client’s and families that they serve. It is necessary for the substance abuse clinician to clarify their role at the beginning of the therapeutic relationship so that the boundaries are clear. Penn Live 2015-03-21Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, refers to a maladaptive patterned use of a substance (drug) in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods not condoned by medical professionals. Substance abuse/drug abuse is not limited to mood-altering or psycho-active drugs. Activity is also considered substance abuse when inappropriately used (as in steroids for performance enhancement in sports). Therefore, mood-altering and psychoactive substances are not the only drugs of abuse. Substance abuse often includes problems with impulse control and impulsivity.
The term "drug abuse" does not exclude dependency, but is otherwise used in a similar manner in nonmedical contexts. The terms have a huge range of definitions related to taking a psychoactive drug or performance enhancing drug for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect. All of these definitions imply a negative judgment of the drug use in question (compare with the term responsible drug use for alternative views). Some of the drugs most often associated with this term include alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines (particularly temazepam, nimetazepam, and flunitrazepam), cocaine, methaqualone, and opioids. Use of these drugs may lead to criminal penalty in addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, both strongly depending on local jurisdiction. Other definitions of drug abuse fall into four main categories: public health definitions, mass communication and vernacular usage, medical definitions, and political and criminal justice definitions. Substance abuse is prevalent with an estimated 50 million users of hard drugs such as cocaine, heroin and other synthetic drugs.
Lost living for this world,
taking chances with my life,
out of control.
Surrounded by darkness,
living in sin.
Substance abuse,
destruction the toll.
Everything's changed,
everything's new.
I live my life for Christ.
I live to hear the truth.
No longer in darkness,
of false reality.
Take the word of God,
it will set you free.
God's my rock,
my foothold to life,
without Him I'm lost.
I'd close up inside.
I cannot walk,
I cannot see,
I cannot hear,
I cannot speak,
He is my reason.
My only reason.
Substance abuse,
