Labor rights or workers' rights are a group of legal rights and claimed human rights having to do with labor relations between workers and their employers, usually obtained under labor and employment law. In general, these rights' debates have to do with negotiating workers' pay, benefits, and safe working conditions. One of the most central of these "rights" is the right to unionize. Unions take advantage of collective bargaining and industrial action to increase their members' wages and otherwise change their working situation. The labor movement initially focused on this "right to unionize", but attention has shifted elsewhere.
Critics of the labor rights movement claim that regulation promoted by labor rights activists may limit opportunities for work. In the United States, critics objected to unions establishing closed shops, situations where employers could only hire union members. The Taft-Hartley Act banned the closed shop but allowed the less restrictive union shop. Taft-Hartley also allowed states to pass right-to-work laws, which require an open shop where a worker's employment is not affected by his union membership. Labor counters that the open shop leads to a free rider problem.

To him the dangers of permitting children into the world of work are clear: entrapment, exploitation, prostitution. But to kids like Eric the new law offers access to new rights that were never available to him before. "It's a good idea. Some have debts, their parents don't work... they go to work to help their families." The change came after children led a protest demanding their right to work. Javier Zabaleta, who drafted the new law, is steadfast in his unconventional approach to child protection. He argues, "we are not bothered by the opinions of other countries - they can say what they want."

Qatar promises to reform 'kafala' labour law

The Gulf state of Qatar, which is facing increased pressure by the international community to improve the rights and conditions of migrant workers, has pledged to introduce new labour legislation by early 2015.
The emirate's sponsorship law, known as "kafala", which limits the rights of movement of foreign workers and has allegedly led to widespread exploitation, will be replaced by new legislation that is "currently under review", a statement from the country's labour and social affairs ministry said.
"We expect to make announcements about new legislation by early next year," it said.
Doha said in May that it would replace the sponsorship system, under which Qatari employers can prevent their foreign workers from leaving the country or changing jobs, with a new system based on employment contracts.
The exit permit that foreign workers need to leave the country, which was likened to modern-day slavery by human rights groups, is to be replaced by a system under which permission is granted automatically after a three-day grace period.
Foreign workers would also be able to change jobs at the end of their contracts, without the need for the certificate they currently require that their previous employer has no objection.
If the contract is an open-ended one, foreign workers would be able to change jobs after five years, and employers confiscating the passports of their workers would face tougher penalties.
"We intend to effect meaningful and lasting change for the benefit of all those who live and work in Qatar," the labour ministry said Sunday.
Qatar's treatment of its massive foreign workforce has been under the international spotlight as it launches a massive construction programme for the 2022 World Cup.
Qatar has a 1.2 million-strong labour force - comprised almost entirely of migrant workers from Asia.

Viet Nam has achieved impressive economic growth over the past ten years, but Viet Nam’s justice services have struggled to keep pace with such rapid changes. While there are many reasons why the justice sector is not meeting their needs, one problem is that there are not enough lawyers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to help the poor. Law School graduates often enter the workforce without having any experience working with and listening to people who have legal problems. Teaching students how the legal theories they have learned can make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people is an important aspect of their education. Through an Innovation Initiative programme, UNDP Viet Nam is helping to make law students better able to serve the public when they graduate, while providing residents living near an industrial zone essential awareness of their rights under the law.

This presentation will examine four core elements underlying the traditional Australian industrial relations system—an independent statutory tribunal; the public interest; a recognition of the need to ‘protect the weak’; and the privileged role played by trade unions.
The presentation will contend that these elements, and the interrelationship between them, have sustained the concept of fairness that is considered an emblematic feature of the Australian system. The concepts continue to have an important role in our labour law system, despite the shift in focus of Australian industrial relations towards enterprise bargaining since 1993.

Richard Naughton is a Senior Fellow in the Law Faculty at Monash University. He teaches in Monash’s postgraduate labour law program, and is an Associate with the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law (CELRL) at the Melbourne Law School. 移工背井离乡越洋挣钱，为的是养家活儿，改善生活，但却往往被迫以人身自由与权益作为交换。2014年1月，一名23岁印尼籍家庭帮佣Erwiana被揭发在香港受雇八个月期间，遭雇主多次虐打至失去工作能力，引起国际对外佣聘雇权益的关注，各移工团体也游行抗议声援。只是Erwiana事件绝非个案，要如何在争取政策保障与劳资平等之余，同时赋权移工本身与社会处于不同位置的人有更多对话，是考验也是挑战。
主讲人Eni Lestari 曾是住在庇护中心的受害者，如今则成了长期为移工抗争的资深社运分子，自2000年开始便活跃于家庭帮佣的组织及赋权工作，是在港印尼移工组织（AKTI- HK）发起人与前主席，目前也是印尼移民工网络（JBMI）协调员、亚洲移居人士联盟（AMCB）发言人、印尼移民工反滥收费联盟（PILAR）及国际移民联盟（IMA）主席。
此次来马，她将与众分享其投身移工组织的经验，并播放由民间集资，素人导演陈浩伦与AKTI共同制作的独立电影《美好生活》，以真实故事为蓝本，反映香港家庭帮佣的处境，剖析雇主与受雇者间的矛盾、冲突与权力关系，突显全球化下底层家庭逼迫把家务“外包”的状况。《美好生活》曾获得“第19届Ifva独立短片及影像媒体比赛” 公开组金奖，并在多场电影节中公映。

Working overseas often carry with dreams and purposes to earn more money and to lift the life quality of the families. However in countries where the national policies are flawed and society less inclusive, migrant workers are often forced to surrender their personal freedom and rights to exploitation in order to survive and secure with job opportunities.
From Erwiana Sulistyaningsih in Hong Kong to Isti Komariyah in Malaysia, these abhorrent abuse cases of the domestic helpers not only reflect the urgent needs to enforce labour rights and equality, but also reflect on the challenges of how labours can be empowered to fight and speak for themselves, and to initiate dialogues with people from different classes.
Eni Lestari is an Indonesian domestic worker in Hong Kong who has been active in migrant domestic workers’ NGOs since 2000. She is the founding member and former chairperson of Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (ATKI-HK), chairperson of United Indonesians Against Overcharging (PILAR), coordinator of Network of Indonesian Migrant Workers (JBMI), spokesperson for Asian Migrants Coordinating Body (AMCB) and currently also the chairperson of International Migrant Alliance (IMA). She will share her experiences in organizing and empowering the migrant workers communities not only to fight for their rights, but also to advocate for institutional change by challenging the notorious policies at the legislative level.

Kallola’ meaning ‘ bird song’ in Odia, is a short film contest, that aimed to create a platform and build awareness on child rights not just among the creative community but among the youth and general public.
Kallola, launched in October 2014 invited entries from professional and amateur filmmakers. It received 27 entries in 30, 60 and 90 seconds’ duration.
The theme for this year was ‘Ending Violence against Children’ with four sub themes: Child Labour, Child Sexual Abuse, Child Marriage and Corporal Punishment.
UNICEF in Odisha partnered with a non-government organization, Aaina for the film contest on child rights in the state.

Chelsea fans gathered outside London's Stamford Bridge Stadium to take part in a protest photo aimed at improving working conditions of migrant workers building the stadiums and facilities for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The protest, taking place before the Blues' crucial clash with Manchester United, was set-up by the Chelsea Supporters Trust together with the Trade Union Council's (TUC) Playfair Qatar group. Steven Russell from the TUC explained the reason for the protest that "every game at the world cup will cost the lives of 62 workers."

Qatar promises to reform 'kafala' labour law
The Gulf state of Qatar, which is facing increased pressure by the international community to improve the rights and conditions of migrant workers, has pledged to introduce new labour legislation by early 2015. The emirate's sponsorship law, known as "kafala", which limits the rights of movement of foreign workers and has allegedly led to widespread exploitation, will be replaced by new legislation that is "currently under review", a statement from the country's labour and social affairs ministry said. "We expect to make announcements about new legislation by early next year," it said. Doha said in May that it would replace the sponsorship system, under which Qatari employers can prevent their foreign workers from leaving the country or changing jobs, with a new system based on employment contracts. The exit permit that foreign workers need to leave the country, which was likened to modern-day slavery by human rights groups, is to be replaced by a system under which permission is granted automatically after a three-day grace period. Foreign workers would also be able to change jobs at the end of their contracts, without the need for the certificate they currently require that their previous employer has no objection. If the contract is an open-ended one, foreign workers would be able to change jobs after five years, and employers confiscating the passports of their workers would face tougher penalties. "We intend to effect meaningful and lasting change for the benefit of all those who live and work in Qatar," the labour ministry said Sunday. Qatar's treatment of its massive foreign workforce has been under the international spotlight as it launches a massive construction programme for the 2022 World Cup. Viet Nam has achieved impressive economic growth over the past ten years, but Viet Nam’s justice services have struggled to keep pace with such rapid changes. While there are many reasons why the justice sector is not meeting their needs, one problem is that there are not enough lawyers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to help the poor. Law School graduates often enter the workforce without having any experience working with and listening to people who have legal problems. Teaching students how the legal theories they have learned can make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people is an important aspect of their education. Enduring valuesor radical change: The shaping of labour law legislation
This presentation will examine four core elements underlying the traditional Australian industrial relations system—an independent statutory tribunal; the public interest; a recognition of the need to ‘protect the weak’; and the privileged role played by trade unions. The presentation will contend that these elements, and the interrelationship between them, have sustained the concept of fairness that is considered an emblematic feature of the Australian system. The concepts continue to have an important role in our labour law system, despite the shift in focus of Australian industrial relations towards enterprise bargaining since 1993. Speaker: RICHARD NAUGHTON Richard Naughton is a Senior Fellow in the Law Faculty at Monash University. He teaches in Monash’s postgraduate labour law program, and is an Associate with the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law (CELRL) at the Melbourne Law School. Richard has recently completed a PhD thesis that undertakes a detailed examination of Australian labour law legislation from 1904 until 2009. However in countries where the national policies are flawed and society less inclusive, migrant workers are often forced to surrender their personal freedom and rights to exploitation in order to survive and secure with job opportunities. From Erwiana Sulistyaningsih in Hong Kong to Isti Komariyah in Malaysia, these abhorrent abuse cases of the domestic helpers not only reflect the urgent needs to enforce labour rights and equality, but also reflect on the challenges of how labours can be empowered to fight and speak for themselves, and to initiate dialogues with people from different classes. Eni Lestari is an Indonesian domestic worker in Hong Kong who has been active in migrant domestic workers’ NGOs since 2000. She is the founding member and former chairperson of Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (ATKI-HK), chairperson of United Indonesians Against Overcharging (PILAR), coordinator of Network of Indonesian Migrant Workers (JBMI), spokesperson for Asian Migrants Coordinating Body (AMCB) and currently also the chairperson of International Migrant Alliance (IMA). She will share her experiences in organizing and empowering the migrant workers communities not only to fight for their rights, but also to advocate for institutional change by challenging the notorious policies at the legislative level. On 21/4/2015 (Tuesday), Genta Media in collaboration with LLG Cultural Development Centre has held a "Beautiful Life" Migrant Film Sharing and Talk on Labour and Resistance. the stars align to give Labour a majority. A Labour majority is very unlikely, but mathematically the stars could align and grant one ... Two things would probably have to happen for Labour to win outright ... Polling of marginal seats has also shown Labour doing in them than the party does in the rest of the country ... But if phone pollsters are exclusively right then Labour could end up with significantly fewer seats than it was expecting....

Yes, some people might think it a bit off if Labour comes second in votes and second in seats and forms a government ... If the opinion polls are right, that person would be Ed Miliband and that party would be Labour ... The Act would allow the SNP to join with the Conservatives to stop a Labour government from legislating, but to deny Miliband the right to seek a new election....

The more Labour MPs the capital elects and the fewer Conservative, the better for the city and for the country as a whole ... Not massively, but enough to make it worth your while to go to your local polling station on Thursday, take that little stub of pencil in your hot metropolitan hand and vote in whatever way that makes a Labour government more likely than another one led by Conservatives. London needs a Labour government....

Both the Conservative and Labour leaders insisted they were still hoping to secure an absolute majority in the House of Commons, despite opinion polls suggesting they remain neck-and-neck and Britain is heading for another hung parliament. A new survey by TNS UK put Tories on 33%, a single point ahead of Labour on 32%, with Ukip on 14%, Lib Dems on 8% and Greens on 6% ... I think that is the right answer for Britain....
