New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft. Then, as part of an extended mission, New Horizons would visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune. Science at the Frontier Our solar system contains three zones: the inner, rocky planets; the gas giant planets; and the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is one of the largest bodies of the icy, "third zone" of our solar system. The National Academy of Sciences placed the exploration of the third zone in general - and Pluto-Charon in particular - among its highest priority planetary mission rankings for this decade. New Horizons is NASA's mission to fulfill this objective. In those zones, our solar system has three classes of planets: the rocky worlds (Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars); the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune); and the ice dwarfs of the Kuiper Belt. There are far more ice dwarf planets than rocky and gas giant worlds combined - yet, no spacecraft has been sent to a planet in this class. The National Academy of Sciences noted that our knowledge of planetary types is therefore seriously incomplete. As the first mission to investigate this new class of planetary bodies, New Horizons will fill this important gap and round out our knowledge of the planets in our solar system. Ancient Relics The ice dwarfs are planetary embryos, whose growth stopped at sizes (200 to 2,000 kilometers across) much smaller than the full-grown planets in the inner solar system and the gas giants region. The ice dwarfs are ancient relics that formed over 4 billion years ago. Because they are literally the bodies out of which the larger planets accumulated, the ice dwarfs have a great deal to teach us about planetary formation. New Horizons seeks those answers. Binary Planet Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. The pair form a binary planet, whose gravitational balance point is between the two bodies. Although binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type. A Mission with Impact The Kuiper Belt is the major source of cometary impactors on Earth, like the impactor that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Horizons will shed new light on the number of such Kuiper Belt impactors as a function of their size by cataloging the various-sized craters on Pluto, its moons, and on Kuiper Belt Objects. Pluto and the Kuiper Belt are known to be heavily endowed with organic (carbon-bearing) molecules and water ice — the raw materials out of which life evolves. New Horizons will explore the composition of this material on the surfaces of Pluto, its moons and Kuiper Belt Objects. The Great Escape Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet, but on a planetary scale. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the solar system. It is thought that the Earth's original hydrogen/helium atmosphere was lost to space this way. By studying Pluto's atmospheric escape, we can learn a great deal about the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. New Horizons will determine Pluto's atmospheric structure and composition and directly measure its escape rate for the first time. The Need to Explore As the first voyage to a whole new class of planets in the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons is a historic mission of exploration. The United States has made history by being the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt - the first NASA launch to a "new" planet since Voyager more than 30 years ago - allows the U.S. to complete the reconnaissance of the solar system. 1, 2, 3, Planet
In 2006 the International Astronomical Union decided to reclassify the objects of the Solar System. Now, the Solar System contains three main group of objects: the planets, the dwarf planets and the small bodies. Pluto, which has been named the ninth planet since its discovery in 1930, has been reclassified as a dwarf planet. In this educational film, Alain Doressoundiram, astrophysicists at the Paris Observatory and his colleagues Danielle Briot (Paris Observatory) and Bernard Schmitt (University Joseph Fourier de Grenoble) explore the history of our understanding of the Solar System. They explain why Pluto is not a planet anymore and how modern research is done on Trans Neptunian Objects, these small icy bodies at the very edge of the Solar System.
The film is french spoken with subtitles in english.

Namiko Gahier-Ogawa, French-Japanese director-choreographer, and renowned concert pianist-composer Gary Goldschneider present a contemporary live dance / theatre / piano performance, Notes from the Underworld.
The show features Goldschneider’s live piano music and also painted videos with atmospheric sounds combined with Gahier-Ogawa’s visceral contemporary dance, accompanied by texts of Conrad, Beckett, Lorca and Wordsworth on an initiatory journey to the Underworld, Pluto's kingdom.
We always go back to the myths because they are universal, containing timeless truths about mankind.
Based on the seasonal myth of Persephone abducted by Pluto into the Underworld,
Notes from the Underworld develops another view of the Greek tale, in which a contemporary heroine decides to explore her psyche, going deeper down into labyrinthian caverns and sinuous waters, in an attempt to discover the sacred dimension of life.
Like a speleologist, crossing the boundaries of these dark and unconscious territories, Persephone searches for her transcendental self and at one point meets another reflection of herself, facing unleashed desires in the shape of Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld.
Pluto and Persephone are thus mirrors of each other; opposites, yet strangely similar and bound together by powerful drives.
Her independent journey will lead her to dangerous borders, to losing her way, finally discovering traces of a tortuous Styx, touching new realities of illusion, shedding dry dead skins behind her in a quest for metamorphosis and transcendence.
The obscurities of Pluto’s Underworld kingdom reveal all fears but also give birth to light.
Thus, we refer to the Underworld as a fertile night within oneself.
The darkest moment of the night is just before dawn, before the plant thrusts up through the surface of the earth, before the harvest of revelation...
“The mind of man is capable of anything – because everything is in it,
all the past as well as all the future. What was there after all?”
Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness
NOTE:
March 8 is the International Woman's Day, a cause promoted by the United Nations.
Notes from the Underworld, beside its poetic development about fundamental darkness and light, refers to what we call "The underground map of uncharted territories".
Empowering oneself by exploring its interior space is also an occasion for us to put an emphasis on women, as free and equal to men.
The piece could be presented under the banner of women's rights, as we show Persephone’s rapture in an active way, making her the subject of her own life. Beyond that interpretation, the piece simply reminds us that women's rights are one part of human rights.

The Maison de la Danse has always granted flamenco a special place, recognising that this traditional dance can be creative and modern. We have helped to launch some rare talents in France, that were spotted in Seville, Xeres or Barcelona. This season, ‘Flamenco se escribe con jota’ celebrates the natural dialogue between flamenco and Aragonese jota. These two art forms are strongly linked both by their history (200 years ago Cadiz and Saragossa were both part of Andalusia) and their firm folk roots. A strong identity can be seen in the lyrics (letras) of the songs, ‘cantes’ in flamenco and ‘cantas’ in jota. A mysterious and profound connection is highlighted in this production, led by the brilliant and masterful jota dancer (bailador) Miguel Angel Berna, who transcends traditional folk jota and renders it totally contemporary, even futuristic. The show weave this together with a moving encounter with the more earthly flamenco of the dancer (bailaora) Úrsula López and the bailaor Rafael Campallo, whose talent, youth and beauty are explosive combined with the blend of sounds from three singers and five musicians from Andalusia and Aragon.
